I love the violet aromas of this excellent Pommard village. Then on the compact, medium- to full-bodied palate there’s a wealth of licorice and wet earth alongside the ample black cherry fruit. Gentle tannins in the context of this commune, which is famous for firm wines, the velvet finish pulling you back for more. From two sites, including the part of Rugiens that isn’t 1er Cru. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

On the nose this prototypical Volnay has all the red fruit character, floral aromas and silky elegance that the world associates with this appellation. I love the way the well-crafted tannins underline this without being a jot too forthright on the surprisingly full-bodied palate. A lovely fresh finish that pulls you back for more. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold

This Auixey-Duresses marries considerable intensity with a striking freshness that the moderately dry tannins accentuate. This may be slightly austere, but on the sleek, medium-bodied palate it has the structure to age. From a little-known, almost south-facing site in this commune that’s better known for whites. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The interplay of earthiness, moderately dry tannins and generous red fruit aromas makes this an authentic modern expression of the appellation. Good savory complexity and a focused, stony finish. From three sites, Les Colombes, Morais and Les Paulands. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

This Savigny-les-Beaune has more delicacy than a lot of wines from what is often considered a blockbuster vintage for red Burgundy. It’s brimming with sour cherries and just beginning to pick up some of the earthy notes of early maturity. Beautiful balance for a non-1er Cru wine from Savigny. A nicely rounded, medium-bodied palate with an almost soft finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

About the Winery
Bideona

Bideona owns or manages over 300 parcels of extraordinary vines in villages throughout the Rioja Alavesa, the coolest, smallest and most Atlantic sub-zone of Spain’s most famous wine region.
The vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa are defined by parcels of old bush vines planted on terraces or hillside slopes with a high percentage of limestone. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria, Bideona’s vines have an average age of 50 years and many were planted in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, before high-yielding clones became available.
Bideona puts the focus firmly on terroir by making each wine in its Vino de Pueblo range as a field blend of Tempranillo and other native varieties from plots in an individual village. Each is named with an acronym – L3Z4 for Leza, L4GD4 for Laguardia, S4MG0 for Samaniego and V1BN4 for Villabuena – owing to DOCa Rioja regulations that only allow village names to be marked if both the winery and the vineyard are in the same location.
“Bideona’s reason for existence is to make wines that show the personality of the Rioja Alavesa and its historic wine villages” states company co-founder and director, Andreas Kubach MW. “We have access to a wealth of diverse plant material in our parcels of old vines, which we believe contributes to the complexity of the wines as well as the differences between villages.”

The 2021 Bideona L3Z4 (Leza) is a Tempranillo from Leza that aged for 12 months in stainless steel and 300-litre French oak barrels. Aromas of cherries, plum, and dried herbs lead into a plush, generous palate. Slightly liqueur-like at first, this gains definition through its chalky tension and compact structure. The 2021 is long-lasting and flavourful with notable aromatic complexity.

Joie Farm's 2022 pinot noir from the Naramata Bench pours a pale red-garnet colour and presents a delicate array of savoury and sultry red fruit, damp earth and caraway spice, quite evolved at this stage and likely approaching peak if you're looking to enjoy the remaining red cherry, currant and pomegranate flavours. It seems fuller and more dense than the declared 12.7% alcohol would lead one to believe, and the length is quite excellent. A solid wine, and value, for pinotphiles everywhere.

Leaning Post

A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it. Nadia and Ilya have had to rely on the support of family, friends and financial institutions to make the dream of owning a winery a reality. Leaning Post began as a virtual winery and is so proud to now have the quaint tasting room at 1491 Hwy 8 on their home property in Winona, Ontario.
Ilya and Nadia are the brains and passion behind Leaning Post Wines. It started with a dream to take unique, interesting single vineyard blocks in Niagara and turn them into distinctive, terroir driven wines. Nadia and Ilya first met in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB where their passion for wine and each other was born.
Ilya has been a winemaker in the Niagara Region for the last 17 vintages working at Daniel Lenko Estate Winery, Foreign Affair and now at Leaning Post Wines. Ilya is also a consulting winemaker at the Good Earth Winery. Ilya’s true passion in life is to make world renowned wines from Niagara that really showcase the distinct terroir that Niagara offers.

Cuvée Heritage is the third vintage of Leaning Post’s flagship red blend, but the first called Heritage – in homage to Ilya and Nadia’s Ukrainian heritage, and with an intention of building a heritage of “tremendous red blends at the estate.” The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon (29%), Syrah (27%), Cabernet Franc (25%) and Merlot 18%. The various components were aged separately in barrel for 20 months. It’s an extraordinary blend that grabs your full attention from the start with a nose of generous black currants, blackberries, figs, smoky red berries, meaty/peppery notes and fine oak spices. There’s a lovely savoury edge on the palate with a wall of ripe tannins and the full spectrum of generous red and dark berries, smoky/meaty notes, red and black peppercorns all leading to an echoing, long and finessed finish. Big time cellar wine that will keep evolving for a decade or more.

The hits just keep on coming from the Bordeaux varieties which benefitted from the near-perfect growing season and long hang time in 2020. This Niagara Lakeshore Merlot is a wonder with intoxicating perfume on the nose followed by ripe raspberries and strawberries, purple plums, forest berries, floral notes and elegant spice notes. It has firm tannic structure on the palate that caresses the ripe and red and dark berries, cocoa, aniseed, fine oak spice notes on a finessed, lifted finish. A beauty that can cellar through 2024.
