Ahi Ka Wine
Ahi Kā is a pioneering Marlborough wine company dedicated to producing outstanding single-vineyard Sauvignon Blancs through long-term partnerships with growers. Founded by internationally acclaimed winemaker Matt Thomson, Master of Wine Sophie Parker-Thomson, and founding grower John Blackmore, Ahi Kā was created to challenge the commodity-driven model that has come to define much of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Instead, the focus is on provenance, quality, sustainability, and fair returns for growers.
Named after the Māori concept Ahi Kā, meaning “to keep the home fires burning,” the brand reflects a commitment to sustainable land stewardship and preserving vineyards for future generations. Intense, vibrant sauvignon with lemongrass, red capsicum and passionfruit flavours supported by a mouthwatering cut of tangy acidity. High energy wine with a perfect sweet-sour balance giving the wine pleasing tension.

From Dillon’s Point, in the lower Wairau Valley near the confluence of the Wairau and Opawa rivers. Vineyards began to be planted in the early 1990s and today the sub-region is recognized for pretty classy sauvignon blanc. As this Ahi Kā surely is, green grassy and green tree fruit juicy, come from a producer that means “keeping the home fires burning.” This example of sauvignon blanc does indeed keep things stable and provides the necessity of good drinking sauvignon blanc. Drink 2026-2028. Tasted July 2026.

There is a wee whiff of sulphur at first but aeration should solve that. Leaving an intriguing tapestry of ripe guava/passion fruit, lime, spearmint and grassy notes - all very much signature Marlborough. It is medium weight, a bit heftier and thankfully less shrill than some, with some warmth (13%) and sweetness. But all distributed and balanced. This is generous with excellent length. Fantastic bouquet, complex and layered with scents of a softer barrel ferment approach, layers of lees with a core of ripe fruit suggesting green melon and cape gooseberry, each and sandy mineral ideas. Other fruits of grapefruit and apple emerge as the wine warms and opens out. On the palate a quietly energetic wine with complexities from citrus and lees, some barrel ferment then apple and melon. Some very tannins and white spice, sandy soils and lees complexities deliver a wine of charms and power. Best drinking from late 2025 through 2031+.

Domaine de Pellehaut
"Pellehaut" gets its name from the Roman or medieval word pila (meaning any kind of solid, pillar-like construction). The presence two kilometres away of mosaics decorated with vines at the Gallo-Roman site of Séviac bears witness to the fact that vines were already grown at Pellehaut in Roman times.
Pellehaut follows a traditional, low-intervention approach to winemaking, using native yeasts from its own vineyards and avoiding thermovinification in favor of cooler fermentation to preserve varietal aromas. After fermentation, the wines are either kept cool in stainless steel tanks or aged for up to two years in fine-grain oak barrels from the Allier forests. Though not part of a prestigious appellation, the estate takes pride in its diverse range of 16 wines, aiming to offer authentic expressions of Gascogne that inspire curiosity and pleasantly surprise wine enthusiasts.

Paddy Borthwick
Proudly family owned, the Borthwick vineyard is an established vineyard situated in Gladstone, the heart of the Wairarapa. Producing quality wine for over a decade, Paddy, an experienced wine maker, has gained a reputation for producing consistently great wines. The twenty seven hectares of vines bordering the Ruamahunga River are growing on stony, free draining, alluvial soils, with a micro climate giving warm daily temperatures, cool nights and low rainfall; perfect conditions for producing distinctive, quality wines.
In line with the family’s legacy of international trade, 90 percent of the wine is exported around the world. Paddy believes in sustainability and best practice within a vineyard, developing an asset for generations to come.

Vibrant, crisp, fruity, tropical, high energy, dry, crunchy, great fruit concentration and length. Red and yellow apple, gooseberry and pineapple, some hay and fresh basil. Crunchy, fresh and delicious. A wine that is ready to drink from day of purchase, have many food friendly attributes and can be cellared for at least 1 year if required.
