Domaine du Coulet - Matthieu Barret
Matthieu Barret was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975 and studied viticulture in Beaune.
He is the 7th generation vigneron and joined his grandfather in Cornas in 1997. Previously, his family had only been farming and selling grapes. He practices biodynamic viticulture, obtaining very low yields (23 hl/ha) and extraordinary quality. He describes his wines as being 100% grape, with a very low sulphite addition. His wines are extremely clean, and, true to the Cornas character. Domaine du Coulet was founded by Matthieu Barret’s grandfather after WWII, and over the years has supplied grapes to some of the best known producers in the Northern Rhône, including Chapoutier and Delas. While his father eschewed the agrarian lifestyle, opting instead for a career in international business, Matthieu knew early on that he wanted to be a vigneron. In 1998 at the age of only 23, he took over the family’s 25 acres of well-situated vines on the terraced hillsides of Cornas.
From the beginning, Matthieu has employed natural, organic practices and by 2002 (his second year of production) the domaine received its biodynamic certification. With each vintage, Matthieu has gained a better understanding of his vine parcels and through thoughtful experimentation, he now turns out a remarkable selection of Cornas wines that express the unique nuances of each micro-terroir. No new oak, no racking, minimal use of sulfur and no fining or filtration. Pure, sexy Syrah.

Francisco Baettig and Carlos de Carlos have been friends for more than 20 years and share a passion for high-quality wines that are genuine and connected to the land where they are made.
Their families arrived in Traiguén and Purén from Switzerland in the 19th century, where they worked in agriculture, surrounded by volcanoes, lakes and forests, silos, livestock, wagons, and wheat fields.
Francisco and Carlos' passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, together with their love for the land of their ancestors, was the inspiration for making their own wines that pay homage to these beloved terroirs. After studying the soil and climate in Traiguén for several years, they chose a plateau with volcanic soil between the Quino and Traiguén Rivers and planted vines in 2013.

Quite a structured pinot, with 18% whole clusters. 5,970 bottles made. Drink from 2027.

A deeper and richer inhalant for sangiovese, surely as compared to the Annata ’22 and also many peers in the region. Fermented in 50 hL cement vats and open tonneaux, aged 20 years in cask, tonneaux and cement. Strays but nowhere from its strength and grip though with 20 minutes in the glass the floral and generous components begin to emerge. Riserva must have time in bottle and glass. It is essential towards seeing what is possible. Sweetness of acidity elevates fruit and allows it to stand up to structure. Drink 2026-2030. Tasted September 2025.

There is considerable complexity here on the nose, which I really like. It shows classic strawberry-red cherry fruit, some hay/earthy cellar character and cedary oak spice. It is light to medium bodied (13.1%), intense, with a smooth mid-palate, sour-edged, and quite dry in the end. Flavours stay well focused and hit excellent length. One of the most “old-world” styled pinots from PEC. Best 2027 to 2030. Last tasted June 2026

It has likely been 10 years since Keint-He and Greer Road have come through VINTAGES, a shock and shame considering the prominence this site holds in Prince Edward County. The 2023 is a fine and frankly classic vintage to re-enter the monopoly stratosphere with its beet-earthy, tisane-tannic and ultra-hyper PEC expressiveness. There is some experience and haute maturity in the 2023, a wine so settled you can take off the shades, sit back, relax and savour a glass. Better still, the scene would be ideal were the light fading, the grill only residually warm to the touch and the stars getting set to emerge. Like meditating over Amarone, only with a more ethereal red wine that requires nothing but dexterity. Cheese sold separately. Drink 2026-2028. Tasted June 2026.

Pale-medium red garnet; open and spicy, evolving, earthy and twiggy, with old wood perfume, cold wood smoke and creosote, brown spices with a modicum of tart red fruit remaining, though this is now well beyond its fruity years (and likely was never particularly fruity). The palate offers good weight and density in the category, silky texture, balanced acids and good to very good length. Dot Series is represented by the pointillist label for a xinomavro that does not scream fruit from the first nose. A definite Greek-ness, always to dramatic effect, not exactly earthy, definitely not musty, but something only Greek wines have. As if the day were a root day and as a result, wines will smell a certain way. In this case of Naoussa, along with sensorial notes in high acid, low alcohol, and an unshakable sense of place. A clean and lovely, perfumed, firm and bright example of xinomavro, full of ripe cherry flavours in the varietal idiom. Tannins are also typically firm and dusty in the Italian fashion, but not overbearing, providing grip and textural relief, supported by firm acids. While it will continue to evolve, I'd suggest enjoying over the near term with salty protein to aid in the softening while still enjoying the vibrant fruit. Nicely done overall. Tasted July 2026.

Radford Dale
Radford Dale and The Winery of Good Hope are two brands made by the same people, in the same winery. The team behind these wineries has been an industry leader since the 1990s in chemical free farming, and more recently in low and no sulfur winemaking. They are a founding member of PIWOSA (Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa) which sets ethical, environmental and social uplift standards. Recognizing the social inequality present in South Africa Radford Dale has also set up a trust called Land of Hope to help facilitate bright futures for children, focusing heavily on education.
Alex Dale who owns and manages both projects is an Englishman who grew up spending summers in Burgundy, France. He moved there in his late teens to follow a passion for winemaking and also opened a wine bar in Beaune. He lived in Burgundy for many years before moving to South Africa in 1998, starting Radford Dale with Ben Radford, an Australian. The idea was to produce wines using modern techniques and technology with a healthy respect for tradition, something Alex came to understand well while living in Burgundy.
Wines are made with minimal intervention in order to best express each vineyard’s individuality.

Pale in colour and savoury in nature, Radford Dale's 2023 pinot is showing maturity on all fronts, with fruit shifted definitively into the dried/desiccated spectrum, building into pot pourri flavours. Drawn from two sites - an east-facing Stellenbosch parcel and north-facing Bot River vines planted to Burgundian clone 115 - it's whole-berry fermented and basket-pressed, then aged in 228L and 300L Burgundian barrels with no new oak, all of which shows in the wine's gentle, unforced framing. The palate is soft and supple, with silky tannins and still-lively, succulent acids. Depth and length are very solid indeed for the price, and styling is classic. Lovers of Bourgogne should take note. Tasted June 2026.

There's freshness of acidity and purity of cool black and blue fruits in the background – but at present it remains veiled behind the wood. This needs time but will come good. Since last year, Fabio Motta has been under majority control of Agricole Gussalli Beretta, the historic arms manufacturers who already own several other wineries in Italy.

It’s brimming with sour cherries and just beginning to pick up some of the earthy notes of early maturity. Beautiful balance for a non-1er Cru wine from Savigny. Ilya and Nadia are the brains and passion behind Leaning Post Wines. It started with a dream to take unique, interesting single vineyard blocks in Niagara and turn them into distinctive, terroir driven wines. Nadia and Ilya first met in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB where their passion for wine and each other was born.
Ilya has been a winemaker in the Niagara Region for the last 17 vintages working at Daniel Lenko Estate Winery, Foreign Affair and now at Leaning Post Wines. Cuvée Heritage is the third vintage of Leaning Post’s flagship red blend, but the first called Heritage – in homage to Ilya and Nadia’s Ukrainian heritage, and with an intention of building a heritage of “tremendous red blends at the estate.” The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon (29%), Syrah (27%), Cabernet Franc (25%) and Merlot 18%. The various components were aged separately in barrel for 20 months. It’s an extraordinary blend that grabs your full attention from the start with a nose of generous black currants, blackberries, figs, smoky red berries, meaty/peppery notes and fine oak spices. There’s a lovely savoury edge on the palate with a wall of ripe tannins and the full spectrum of generous red and dark berries, smoky/meaty notes, red and black peppercorns all leading to an echoing, long and finessed finish. Big time cellar wine that will keep evolving for a decade or more.

Leaning Post
A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it. Nadia and Ilya have had to rely on the support of family, friends and financial institutions to make the dream of owning a winery a reality. Leaning Post began as a virtual winery and is so proud to now have the quaint tasting room at 1491 Hwy 8 on their home property in Winona, Ontario.
Ilya and Nadia are the brains and passion behind Leaning Post Wines. It started with a dream to take unique, interesting single vineyard blocks in Niagara and turn them into distinctive, terroir driven wines. Nadia and Ilya first met in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB where their passion for wine and each other was born.
Ilya has been a winemaker in the Niagara Region for the last 17 vintages working at Daniel Lenko Estate Winery, Foreign Affair and now at Leaning Post Wines. Ilya is also a consulting winemaker at the Good Earth Winery. Ilya’s true passion in life is to make world renowned wines from Niagara that really showcase the distinct terroir that Niagara offers.
