Champagne Fresne Ducret
Fresne-Ducret is rich in family history and has been rooted in the premier cru village of Villedommange since the mid 1800s. Originally growing grapes for the big champagne houses, it wasn’t until the end of the second world war that the family decided to make their own wine. The tradition carries on today with Pierre Fresne and his wife Daniella (an Oakville ex-pat). Their philosophy is to produce wines that best exemplify the terroir of Villedommange, and they do this with sustainability in mind.
In 2014, Pierre Fresne embarked on a new adventure by creating a limited series of champagnes based on his desire for experimentation. Since then, he has produced one or two of these wines each year. Each are unique, according to his wishes and the profile of the vintage. This unique collection is called Arquémie, the term for alchemy in the Middle Ages. In 2018 Pierre began converting the vineyards to organic viticulture, and 2021 will be their first organic certified vintage.

This is a very well aged, golden toned Champagne with a very lifted quite oxidative nose of barley sugar, caramelized walnut, burlap and almost turnip-like fruit/root veg aroma. It is medium weight with excellent acidity, a hint of caramelized sweetness and a nutty, bitter finish. Outstanding length. Last tasted July 2026

A sad situation when nearly six years passes before having the chance at another taste of this most excellent Champagne. A new level of toast and charm is on display today, and still that revitalizing feeling you get from just one glass. Better yet, make it two. ’Tis the sort to take one’s breath away. When richness, yeasty and warm toasted brioche get together in Champagne the effect is comforting and potentially hypnotizing. From the Premier Cru village of Villedommange dating back to the mid 1800s, the pedigree is noted and the 48 months of lees aging a coup for creating both a creamy and a revitalizing Champagne. There is an oxidative aspect here and it's effectualness is one that imagines exotic spice cupboards, masala mixes and gingery tisanes. Quite the exotic bubble, lightly frothy, elegantly styled, complex and fine. Drink 2020-2026. Tasted October 2020.

Richly nutty and toasty, yet firm and balanced, with gently unfurling layers of dried fruit, this is a memorable Champagne. I like the finely balanced palate that is lifted and supported by bright yet harmonious acidity and subtle sense of richness. The length is abiding. I would pair this sparkling wine with rich foods like gougères, butter-poached lobster, or a creamy cheese like camembert. Tasted July 2026.

This Champagne shows some fine maturity. A blend based on the 2014 vintage, it now has toastiness while keeping intense freshness. Acidity and touches of minerality come through the spiciness. Drink now.

This is a youthful, slightly brittle pinot that could use a year or two in bottle. The nose is nicely lifted and promising with classic pinot cherry fruit, considerable barrel toast and spice, and an evergreen forest scent. It is mid-weight, quite firm and well balanced with 12.5% alcohol, some minerality and again those chippy tannin, drying the finish. The length is very good to excellent. Best 2028 to 2032. Bellene's 2024 Bourgogne is showing beautifully at the moment, still fruity but silky smooth, with a fine range of flavours on offer from bright red fruit to savoury-herbal notes. Succulent and delicious, a triumph from this challenging vintage and attractively priced to be sure. To enjoy over the next 1-2 years. Tasted June 2026.

This is a classic if lush expression of pinot noir, with notes of dark cherries, ripe strawberries, juicy black raspberries, and savoury dried herbs. Oak influence adds dimension here, in the shape of woody spices like nutmeg, cloves, and all-spice. Medium bodied, the palate is ripe, with an appealing impression of sweet fruit, grainy tannins, and juicy acidity. The finish is long, ending on a spice note. I would drink this over the next year or two. Tasted June 2026.

Francisco Baettig and Carlos de Carlos have been friends for more than 20 years and share a passion for high-quality wines that are genuine and connected to the land where they are made.
Their families arrived in Traiguén and Purén from Switzerland in the 19th century, where they worked in agriculture, surrounded by volcanoes, lakes and forests, silos, livestock, wagons, and wheat fields.
Francisco and Carlos' passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, together with their love for the land of their ancestors, was the inspiration for making their own wines that pay homage to these beloved terroirs. After studying the soil and climate in Traiguén for several years, they chose a plateau with volcanic soil between the Quino and Traiguén Rivers and planted vines in 2013.

There is iron savoriness and minerality that make this unique, with a Gevry-like grip and a structured profile. It brims with aromas of roasted spices, crushed shells, blood oranges and berries that extend to a tight, almost full-bodied palate supported by very firm tannins. 14 months in 300-liter oak barrels, of which 35% were new. Quite a structured pinot, with 18% whole clusters. 5,970 bottles made. Drink from 2027.

Cordero San Giorgio
Cordero San Giorgio is a new beginning in Oltrépo-Pavese for three siblings who grew up surrounded by their family’s vines at the legendary Vietti Estate in Castiglione Falletto in Barolo. The siblings Francesco, Lorenzo, and Caterina Cordero, are grandchildren of Luciana Vietti & Alfredo Currado, one of the pioneers of the first Barolo crus and considered the “father of Arneis.” Their father is Mario Cordero, Alfredo and Luciana’s son-in-law, who was the company’s co-owner from the beginning of the ‘80s until 2016 when it was sold.
Cordero San Giorgio is located in Santa Giuletta, a village sitting on the first hilly belt of the territory, an area made up of valleys that fan out over the Po Valley with steep slopes and thick ridges. The composition of the soil makes their site particularly suitable for the production of Pinot Nero, making it possible to obtain wines with maximum varietal expression and a strong territorial identity.
The Oltrepò Pavese is a hilly triangle of land in Lombardy, embraced by Piedmont, Liguria, and Emilia-Romagna. A territory dedicated to the cultivation of vines and the culture of wine for centuries: a land of both cultural and gastronomic encounter and exchange. Cordero San Giorgio is in the town of Santa Giuletta, and focuses on working with Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay.

Domaine de Pellehaut
"Pellehaut" gets its name from the Roman or medieval word pila (meaning any kind of solid, pillar-like construction). The presence two kilometres away of mosaics decorated with vines at the Gallo-Roman site of Séviac bears witness to the fact that vines were already grown at Pellehaut in Roman times.
Pellehaut follows a traditional, low-intervention approach to winemaking, using native yeasts from its own vineyards and avoiding thermovinification in favor of cooler fermentation to preserve varietal aromas. After fermentation, the wines are either kept cool in stainless steel tanks or aged for up to two years in fine-grain oak barrels from the Allier forests. Though not part of a prestigious appellation, the estate takes pride in its diverse range of 16 wines, aiming to offer authentic expressions of Gascogne that inspire curiosity and pleasantly surprise wine enthusiasts.

There is considerable complexity here on the nose, which I really like. It shows classic strawberry-red cherry fruit, some hay/earthy cellar character and cedary oak spice. It is light to medium bodied (13.1%), intense, with a smooth mid-palate, sour-edged, and quite dry in the end. Flavours stay well focused and hit excellent length. One of the most “old-world” styled pinots from PEC. Best 2027 to 2030. Last tasted June 2026

It has likely been 10 years since Keint-He and Greer Road have come through VINTAGES, a shock and shame considering the prominence this site holds in Prince Edward County. The 2023 is a fine and frankly classic vintage to re-enter the monopoly stratosphere with its beet-earthy, tisane-tannic and ultra-hyper PEC expressiveness. There is some experience and haute maturity in the 2023, a wine so settled you can take off the shades, sit back, relax and savour a glass. Better still, the scene would be ideal were the light fading, the grill only residually warm to the touch and the stars getting set to emerge. Like meditating over Amarone, only with a more ethereal red wine that requires nothing but dexterity. Cheese sold separately. Drink 2026-2028. Tasted June 2026.

Pale-medium red garnet; open and spicy, evolving, earthy and twiggy, with old wood perfume, cold wood smoke and creosote, brown spices with a modicum of tart red fruit remaining, though this is now well beyond its fruity years (and likely was never particularly fruity). The palate offers good weight and density in the category, silky texture, balanced acids and good to very good length. To be enjoyed over the near term, best at the table with something savoury and earthy. Tasted June 2026.

Good substance and depth for 'basic' Bourgogne, thanks to the old vines - in this case from a single 3.7ha site with average vine age of 67 years. It shows quite ripe cherry/raspberry fruit, a touch of violet, barrel toast, spice and vanilla. Although not specified it seems to me to be more a Cotes de Nuits style. It is medium weight, quite firm and voluminous with good acidity and some heat. More mineral. Excellent length. Best 2027 to 2035.

Fine, delicate and fragrant in the Volnay style, Potel's '23 Les Grand Poisots is a sleek and fluid wine yet with firm underlying girding, fine-grained but high-tensile tannins, a sort of carbon fiber-like structure, light but very strong. I love the morello cherry fruit and the saliva-inducing acids, and especially the wet limestone and bloody-iron-tinged flavours. Length is very good to excellent. This should reach drinking peak relatively early I'd say given the current appeal, or hold into the mid-late 30s

This old vine 1er Cru Savigny shows surprisingly deep colour. The nose is lifted, fragrant and floral (lily), with very ripe strawberry/cherry jam, baked plum (actually thought of grenache) barrel spice and toast. It is a mouthful - rich, warm, smooth and refined at the same time. Real power here, with fine tannin balance - almost seamless, and excellent length. Some minerality as well. The length is outstanding. A real mouthful!

Ode to a matriarch and the height of quality but also importance within the Beaune reds made at Domaine de Bellene. More closed than the Savigny and Volnay, stricter and more tightly wound. Not exactly a matter of density but it does feel more compact and yet restricted to say that these vineyards produce fruit of a higher skin to flesh ratio. The extraction and maceration follow suit to establish an unyielding compression that will take some years to unravel and eventually expose the true nature of the fruit. Expect a truly fleshy Beaune Premier Cru somewhere ahead between three and for years time. Drink 2028-2034.

Aux Chaignots is a newer and pint-sized 0.14 hectare plot of Premier Cru Nuits-Saint-Georges in the northerly Côte d’Or upslope and within a limestone throw over to those in the village of Vosne-Romanée. Makes for the most two-toned, dual-textured Bourgogne of the lot, at one crisp and crunchy and then chewy, from exterior to interior. Reminds somewhat of the formidable 2020 and its striking tannins, both capable of unleashing and crashing their power over our palates with impunity and trenchant intention. Of course this 2023 remains in an immovable state, grippy and suggestive of a hands off approach for a minimum five years post vintage. More would be the suggestion because the fortification is a secure one and there is really no sense trying to break down barriers that do not want to be broken down. Drink 2028-2037.

Les Quartiers De Nuits is yet another minuscule plot of a vineyard identified and chosen by Nicolas Potel, not quite one-third of a hectare, planted 96 years before this 2023 harvest. An early one for the most part, before the cold winds move in and ahead of Grand Cru neighbours like that of Echezeaux and Clos de Vougeot. There is a bit of mean intensity and streak in this singular, lieu-dit cru of a Bourgogne. The tannins are fierce, they lash upon the palate with severity and therefore the necessity to give time will become the requiem to success. Les Quartiers De Nuits is no shrinking violet and in fact the mix of botanical verdancy and bitters make up a formula which could never be solved in the first few years. The stuffing can’t be denied and the objective is perspicuous. Stay clear for a while. Drink 2028-2035.

The Oltrepò Pavese is a hilly triangle of land in Lombardy, embraced by Piedmont, Liguria, and Emilia-Romagna. A territory dedicated to the cultivation of vines and the culture of wine for centuries: a land of both cultural and gastronomic encounter and exchange. Cordero San Giorgio is in the town of Santa Giuletta, and focuses on working with Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay.
Domaine de Pellehaut
"Pellehaut" gets its name from the Roman or medieval word pila (meaning any kind of solid, pillar-like construction). The presence two kilometres away of mosaics decorated with vines at the Gallo-Roman site of Séviac bears witness to the fact that vines were already grown at Pellehaut in Roman times.
Pellehaut follows a traditional, low-intervention approach to winemaking, using native yeasts from its own vineyards and avoiding thermovinification in favor of cooler fermentation to preserve varietal aromas. After fermentation, the wines are either kept cool in stainless steel tanks or aged for up to two years in fine-grain oak barrels from the Allier forests. Though not part of a prestigious appellation, the estate takes pride in its diverse range of 16 wines, aiming to offer authentic expressions of Gascogne that inspire curiosity and pleasantly surprise wine enthusiasts.
McArthur Ridge
McArthur Ridge Wines is a family-owned winery in New Zealand’s Central Otago, renowned for crafting award-winning wines that reflect the rugged beauty and unique terroir of the Alexandra Valley. Established in the early 2000s, the estate has grown from its first 15 hectares of vines into one of the region’s largest single vineyards, now spanning 175 hectares of ancient glacial terraces. Drawing on Brassknocker soils, glacial-fed water, and a cool alpine climate, the winery focuses on producing expressive Pinot Noir and other small-batch wines with depth, elegance, and balance. Groupe Bellene
Led by Nicolas Potel in Beaune, Groupe Bellene is composed of the négociant arm Maison Roche de Bellene, the winery arm Domaine de Bellene, and a special back-vintage series under the Collection Bellenum label.
- Maison Roche de Bellene offers a complete range of wines, with an emphasis on individual terroirs from old vines of more than 40 years. All of the growers that Nicolas works with are either organic certified or sustainably farmed.

- Collection Bellenum is a back vintage series that Nicolas Potel sourced from his friends in the region, offering a magnificent selection of bottled history. The wines have moved only twice in their lives, from the original cellar to Potel's and now to yours!
Nicolas Potel grew up at Volnay's Domaine Pousse d'Or, where his father worked. He trained abroad and returned home in 1996 to build a négociant business and started Maison Nicolas Potel, where he sourced grapes from good parcels, often working with the growers to improve the quality. By 2002, he was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations, and the rest is history!

This is a solid entry-level Bourgogne pinot noir - supple and juicy, brimming with flavours of dark cherries and underbrush, alongside notes of toasted spice and a hint of cured meat. Tannins are ripe and rounded; acids provide just enough lift. The finish is long, ending on a pleasantly herbal note. Tasted March 2025.

About the Winery
Mas Codina
The Mas Codina estate is located in the heart of the Alt Penedès region, comprising of low-lying plains and hills between 250 and 300 metres high.
Until recently, the farm has always grown, and made a livelihood from, cereals, grapes, peaches and vegetables, as well as farm animals. Now, apart from century-old olive trees, all the land is devoted to vineyards.
Mas Codina has been in the same family for generations. They have adopted organic farming practices promoting natural processes and seeking a balanced ecosystem. All because of their love for land and tradition. There are currently 40 hectares of vineyards that are being organically farmed.

This is a quite fine, firm and elegant cava with nicely placed yellow fruit, mineral and some wet stone and light bready character. This has good character. Nicely firm and dry with a nutty, slightly bitter finish. The length is excellent. Tasted March 2022.

Attractive aromatics and balance on the palate are features here on this well-made and flavourful cava, in the brut nature style (no added sugar), though neither hard nor overly tart. I like the toasty, creamy citrus fruit - lees ageing flavours are in stark relief, mixing with a good degree and range of other flavours, from fruit to nuts and beyond. Very good length, too. An impressive example in the category, and better than the last bottling tasted in March of 2022. Tasted November 2025. Previous: Here's a ripe and creamy, but also crisp and bone dry Cava with fine flavour definition and concentration, and decent length. Ripe citrus, orange and lemon zest, and gentle sweet herbal notes lead on the palate. Ready to drink. Tasted March 2022.

Singular Cava work from a 40 hectare estate in the Alt Penedès dating to 1681. Organic, estate bottled and vines 20-30 years of age. A blend of chardonnay, macabeo, pinot noir and xarel-lo, aged on its lees for a minimum of two years before release. Buttered golden toast brioche, baked apples and light caramel. Delicious. Drink 2025-2027. Last tasted November 2025.
