About the Winery
Bodegas Puiggròs
Since 1843, the Puiggros family has been producing wines from their own vines in the Odena region of Catalunya for the family and close friends. Over generations they had come to realize that their vineyards and techniques were something worth sharing with the world. A sincere dedication to the terroir in their zone and the indigenous varieties that grow there, allows them to constantly discover ways to unlock all of the magic that lies within their land.
Starting with conscious and clean farming in the vineyard, they hand-harvest only the best fruit for their production, and ferment each vineyard separately in varying vessels to accentuate what the vines have to show; some in stainless steel, and many in clay amphora of differing sizes. All the while seeing very little sulfur use (if any) until bottling. Puiggros is pushing the quality of northeastern Spain's wines forward, and doing so in a clean and unique way.

Exedra Negre is 100% Garnatxa (Catalan for grenache) planted on limestone and clay soils at 500 meters. Part is fermented in large concrete, part in amphora. It pours fairly pale but bright ruby. The aromas are classic grenache strawberry jam with fine, subtle array of tobacco, pepper and herbs in the background. It is medium weight, fresh, balanced and almost refined - not really showing its 14.5% alcohol except for a slight kirsch flavour to the fruit on the finish. The length is excellent. Chill a bit. Warm vintage for garnatxa aged in clay-pot (amphora) from Odena’s limestone and clay soils at 500m in the shadow of the Montserrat massif. Consistent sweet red candied fruit aroma, always alluring and quite naturally so. The amphora does not take over the character but seems to simply allow the land to do the talking. Drink 2026-2029. Tasted January 2026.

Pure grenache vinified and aged in amphora, the wine shows oxidative aromatics, candied/dried fruit and shoe polish, more advanced than one would hope for at this relatively young age. The palate is nonetheless, silky-smooth and broadly appealing, soft and round as it is, generous without heaviness. I like the saline nature that encourages another sip and brings the fruit and wild herb flavours into sharper relief. Acids are equally helpful in framing the ensemble. In the end it works nicely; drink over the near term to capture the fading freshness. Tasted January 2026.

About the Winery
Celler Escoda-Sanahuja
Joan Ramón Escoda founded Celler Escoda Sanahuja in 1999 along with his wife Mari Carmen in Conca del Barbera, Catalonia. Since then, they have been disrupting the wine industry both in their home-country and internationally.
Celler Escoda Sanahuja was one of the first wineries that, back in 2005 stopped adding sulphites to their wines. Joan Ramon has always been a radical winemaker and a grass-roots innovator. His wild enthusiasm has been fuel for the natural winemaking scene, and has also led him to, spontaneously, create the 'Brutal' movement popular in natural wine circles. These are highly individual wines reflecting their origins and their innovative winemaker.

Azienda Agricola Jasci
Located on the hills that rise 250 meters above sea level from the Adriatic Sea just above the seaside resort town of Vasto in Abruzzo, here the Jasci family has been growing grapes and producing wine for three generations. Starting In the early 1960s, Pasquale and Maria turned the focus of their farm to producing estate wines.
In 1980, their son Giuseppe decided to convert the farm to organic, becoming one of the first ten wineries in all of Italy to be certified. Today led by grandson Donatello Jasci and his wife Piera, the family is the second largest single grower in all of the region. Donatello’s approach in the cellar is consistent with his farming: clean and simple. The wines see little or no oak and have a purity of flavor that is rare at the price. In addition to his duties at the winery, Donatello Jasci has served as President of the local Organic Growers’ Consortium.

Will age a bit indeed with this ’22 montepulciano having changed not an iota with nearly two further years in bottle. Superior concentration and hard to find a gaggle its equal at this price. Last tasted February 2026.
Classic perfume and style, salty upfront for montepulciano with florals part fresh and part dried. Rich as need be, full and substantial on the mid palate and then a return to savoury and also salty at the finish. Really good barrel usage and integration. Clean and classic. Will age a bit. Drink 2025-2029. Tasted March 2024.

This is an inky, pleasantly perfumed montepulciano d'abruzzo that is organically grown. Fruit flavours span the red and dark end of the spectrum, joined by herbal and wildflower notes. Relatively approachable and supple, the full-bodied palate is populated with fine-grained firm tannins and balanced acidity. A long, flavourful finish features notes of oak spice and cedar alongside supple dark fruit. Featuring sensible oak influence, this is a well-made and even-keeled montepulciano that is ready to drink but can also be cellared for another 2-3 years. Last tasted February 2026.

Pago Aylés was founded by Federico Ramón, who in 2003 began his dream of classifying this unique land as the first Vino de Pago in the Aragon region. In the Spanish wine quality pyramid, the Pago stands as a top tier or grand cru winery. Just before Federico died, his dream came true in 2010, as Aylés became the 10th Vino de Pago in Spain.
Today his three children continue to produce wines from this special land. The vineyard site has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 12th century by Spanish monks. Influenced by the River Huerva and the Monte San Pablo mountain, the soil is a mixture of clay, limestone and chalk – ideal for making high-quality wine. Caves, ravines and old river beds can be found all over the estate, which is brimming with wildlife.

Unexpected would indicate that strange things are forecast to occur but this garnacha from the large and historical Finca Aylés estate in Cariñena pretty much does the expected. Delivers dark varietal fruit with a mineral streak as salty as it is firm. Crunchy garnacha, full bodied and flavoured for the foreseen and well, expected. Garnacha of empowerment, helping consumers trust themselves and their palates and opinions, ultimately enabling them to confidently make wine purchasing decisions. Drink 2025-2027. Tasted March 2025.

From a large and distinguished vineyard, this is a very smart and delicious garnacha. The ripe sweet almost candied nose black cherry, pomegranate juice is also quite floral. Oak is nicely in the background with a hint of mocha and spice. It is quite full bodied and rounded, but also has enough warmth and acidity to give it a sense of freshness and stability. The length is excellent. Might be a bit confected for some. Chill a bit. Last tasted Jan 2026

This vegan garnacha from Aragón is almost lavishly fruity, with an engaging array of red fruit, some lightly candied. Undertones of woody spices and violet petals add to its appeal. The palate is supple, with juicy acidity, subtle warmth, and a gentle viscosity that lends it a sense of fullness. I really like the woody herbal note that lingers on the long finish. Bold, easy-to-like, and full of varietal character, this garnacha should ideally be enjoyed over the next year or so. Tasted January 2026.

Clean, stylish, and modern, with a mouthwatering degree of juiciness. At 13.5% alcohol, it sits on the moderate end for the variety, making it notably more food-friendly than the norm. The spice profile is clearly grape-driven, with little to no influence from oak. Tasted January 2026.

A deliciously ripe and fruity, sweet oak-inflected red from Aragón, a blend ("coupage") of merlot, garnacha, tempranillo and cabernet sauvignon. Dark plummy fruit, vanilla and dark chocolate flavours dominate with a dash of savoury herbs . I find it still a little tight and astringent, and would cellar another 2-3 years for additional softening; the sweet fruit will appeal widely no doubt. Bonus: certified organic. Tasted January 2026.

Labelled as Vino de Pago, this wine comes from a single estate and is an organic blend of merlot, garnacha, tempranillo, and cabernet sauvignon grown on clay and calcareous soils at 500–700 m in Aragon, northeastern Spain. It shows some oak influence and a warming 14.5% alcohol, yet the palate is surprisingly balanced, filled with zesty, jammy red and black fruit. Licorice, white pepper, cedar spice, concentrated violet, and a hint of black tapenade add complexity. Very good length completes a wine that’s generous in flavour but lighter than expected on the finish. Tasted January 2026.

Château de Montfaucon
Just across the Rhone river from the beautiful vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the Lirac appellation extends itself on the low hills alongside the river. The history of Château de Montfaucon dates back to the 11th century when the castle's first tower was built. The castle's role in history was strategic; the Rhône River was the border between the French Kingdom and the Holy Roman German Empire. Montfaucon was one of many castles and fortresses along the Rhône River constructed to guard the border.
Rodolphe de Pins took over the family estate of Montfaucon in 1995 and subsequently rebuilt the winery and began practicing sustainable agriculture. He honed his winemaking skills in Barossa at Henschke and Vieux Telegraphe in Châteauneuf du Pape before returning to Lirac, so needless to say, his familiarity with the local varieties is well established.

This is a blend of usual suspects among the white grapes of southern France with marsanne leading at 40% followed by clairette at 35%. It was fermented and aged in French oak barrels which accounts for the quite deep yellow gold colour. The nose is rather reserved but exotic and complex with waxy notes, apricot, orange peel, honey and wood spice. It is full bodied, almost thick, creamy and warming with 13.5% abv. Quite a mouthful, with some sense of wood tannin on the finish. Needs very rich savoury dishes. Excellent length. Tasted Nov 2025

Comtesse Madeleine is a blend of marsanne and clairette with lesser amounts of grenache blanc and picpoul, likely named for Marie-Madeleine Pioche de la Vergne, comtesse de La Fayette, a 17th century French writer known for La Princesse de Clèves. Profound is once again the first word to slip from the tongue because neither Lirac nor Côtes du Rhône are normally poised to offer such substantial qualities. Aside from the flinty opening salvo there are wisps and whispers of aromatic complexities in between, all ahead of a maturity and knowing experience showing prominently at the finish. Once again gastronomical scents, of porchetta, herbs and other aromatics coming from this meatiest of white wines. Begins slower and takes longer to reveal its charms than the previous vintage tasted but once momentum makes gains then the stirring is activated. The finish is long and true. Drink 2025-2029. This blend of marsanne, clairette, grenache blanc and picpoul, aged 8 months in oak barrels, is named in homage to Madeleine de Montfaucon, grandmother of current owner Rodolphe de Pins, who stewarded the estate for over 60 years. The wine offers a gently aromatic profile: floral notes, fresh linen, a touch of musk, and yellow fruit recalling mirabelle plum. Lanonlin and a lively mineral edge keep it fresh. The palate is fleshy, with oak spice playing a minimal supporting role behind the fruit. Highly drinkable, it gains richness as it unfurls. Features a lingering finish of memorable length. Tasted November 2025.

Château Haut-Grelot
Château Haut Grelot is located in Saint Ciers Sur Gironde, approximately 50 kms north of Bordeaux, on the right bank of the Gironde Estuary. It was established by the Bonneau family in 1922 and now run but the 4th Generation. Today Château Haut-Grelot comprises 58 hectares of vineyards and is run by Céline and Julien, who was recently awarded the title 'Best Young Talent' in Bordeaux.
The vineyards are made up of sandy-gravel on the hillsides bordering the Gironde Estuary and sand-clay-silt on the hillsides further inland. Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux benefits from an ideal microclimate where there is a high level of sunshine and enough rain to guarantee the perfect environment for grape production. As a result the reds are fruity and concentrated and the whites are fresh, vibrant and delicate.

Julien Bonneau, (Château Haut Grelot in the Blayais), and his friend Alexandre Lavigne, restaurateur in Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, created in 2014 a range of wines, Grains d'Estuaire, from 'a 10 ha vineyard located in Saint-Bonnet-sur-Gironde, in the south of Charente-Maritime.

Casa Los Frailes
Casa Los Frailes is located in the valley called “land of Alforins”, south west inland province of Valencia, with average altitude of 650-700 meters above sea level. The valley is located between two mountains range, on the east the Mediterranean Sea (50km) and on the west the main “plateau” of La Mancha. Casa Los Frailes (“Cals Frares” in old valencian local language) takes their name from the Jesuit Friars that used to live in the Estate over two centuries (XVII to XVIII). The Casa Los Frailes estate now belongs to the Velázquez family and has for over 250 years, today the 13th generation runs the winery.
Frontrunners in organic agriculture and biodynamics, the estate consists of 162 hectare with vineyards, Mediterranean forest, almond and olive trees and a unique terroir. The main variety was (and still is) the Monastrell, cultivated in bush vines. "As inheritors of such legacy, we believe our wines should be part and transmit the history of our estate, as this history is obviously unique. In today's interconnected world, wines are more and more uniform, but we are committed to elaborate authentic and different wines, loyal to our personality and our history."

From high altitude, biodynamically, dry-farmed vineyards in southeast Spain comes a deeply coloured, robust red with generous aromas of black fruit jam, brown olive, pepper, licorice and cigar. It is open knit, fairly juicy and warm at 13.5% abv. Quite a mineral, sour-edged core, with mild tannin. The length is excellent. Ideal BBQ red. Tasted May 2026

Demeter-certified biodynamic monastrell-syrah blend (50/50) from the Vélazquez family's Casa Los Frailes estate in the Valle dels Alforins (Valencia, 650-700m altitude on calcareous soils), a juicy, balanced, very satisfying red with gently grippy texture. I like the black and blue fruit flavours, the violet twist, a pretty and engaging expression. Drink or hold mid-term — the stuffing is sufficient to see this into the '30s comfortably. Tasted May 2026.
