Sister’s Run is a bold, value-driven Australian wine brand founded by acclaimed winemaker Elena Brooks, whose nearly 30 vintages of global experience span celebrated projects including Dandelion Vineyards, Heirloom Vineyards, and Cien Y Pico in Spain. Crafting expressive, site-driven wines from regions such as Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, and Coonawarra, Elena has built an international reputation in a traditionally male-dominated industry while championing collaboration, mentorship, and greater inclusivity in wine. True to its playful motto — “for the boots worn in the vineyard and the heels worn to wine award dinners” — Sister’s Run balances approachability with serious craftsmanship, delivering regionally expressive wines with fine wine character at exceptional value.

Notes of black cherries dipped in milk chocolate kick things off on the nose followed by hints of violet florals and sweet clove spices from tempered oak. An underlying herbal streak underscores the sweet aromatics, adding a savoury, almost minty edge beneath the fruit. Smooth tannins provide a rounded grip on the palate and are wrapped up by flavours of warm stewed plums with a touch of Pastis. Hallmark notes of cracked black pepper cascade into the rich finish. The balance between ripe fruit and tannin, along with underlying acidity, makes this big red incredibly drinkable.

Blank Canvas is the personal wine range of husband and wife team, Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson, MW. With a focus on Marlborough, Syrah from Hawkes Bay and Pinot Noir from Central Otago, the Blank Canvas wines are exciting, small-batch and increasingly recognized as the avant-garde of New Zealand wine. Every effort is put into making wines that are distinctive and cerebral, unencumbered by a regime or badge and are not beholden to tradition. Every vineyard, variety and vintage is approached as if it is a blank canvas.

The 2020 Element Syrah captures the rare combination of density and freshness found in the Gimblett Gravels, with a beautifully fragrant and textured expression of the site.

A high proportion of whole bunch and signature co-fermentation with Grüner Veltliner bring an alluring lift to the bouquet, revealing notes of violet, star anise, and smoked black pepper alongside black plum, bright currant, and savoury black olive. The palate is compact and finely structured, with vibrant acidity, cocoa-powder tannins, and a rich yet balanced texture. Subtle oak and lees ageing add depth and length while preserving the wine’s clarity and sense of place. Complex and expressive now, it also offers excellent potential to evolve with time, developing further layers of classic Syrah character.
