Domaine Andre Aubert
At the very heart of the Rhône Valley, at the northerly tip of the Southern Rhône, lie the vineyards of Grignan-Les-Adhémar. The chances are you haven’t heard the name before, few people have, but the wines are worth seeking out. It’s not a new wine region – vines have been planted here since around 500BC but it is a new name (formerly known as Côteaux-du-Tricastin). Domaine André Aubert, has been formed over decades and today comprises of more than 280 hectares spread from north to south of the prestigious Southern Rhone Valley on the appellations Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône villages, Visan, and Grignan-les-Adhémar.

Huge value in a very stylish, pure and correct southern Rhone blend from a region in the north of the region. This shows a lovely, generous sweet strawberry/cherry nose with vanillin/nougat, red rose fine tobacco/dried herbs. It is medium weight, open knit, smooth and almost a touch sweet with very fine chalky tannin. Great fruit presence and warmth make this so appealing. And the length is excellent. Tasted May 2026.

The Auberts farm 280 hectares throughout the southern Rhône, this northerly appellation of Grignan-les-Adémar is the family's home base and they are considered pioneers in the region. The 2022 Le Devoy is a blend of grenache (40%), syrah (40%) and carignan (20%) whose vines average 40-years of age on galets roulés, is matured in cement vats. Its oak-free flavour profile highlights youthful fruit, pepper, and garrigue from this windswept appellation. Concentration is notable and the tannins are firm and linear. Excellent length. Clos del Rey
In the foothills of the Pyrénées Mountains, not far from the Mediterranean sea, Clos del Rey is situated in the high altitude hills over the tiny village of Maury. The estate has been owned and farmed by the Montagne family for generations. The vineyard itself is nestled among a protected area of garrigues (rosemary and thyme). The vines of up to 120 years old are allowed to grow natural and untrained, in the old-fashioned way, known as the goblet or bush style. However, it is what lies beneath the vineyard that lends much of the character and complexity found in their wines. Julien Montagne makes complex wines that truly represent his vineyards and his Catalan roots--you can almost smell the sun in the glass.

This sports a very pretty, lifted nose plum, cranberry and blackberry, with lifted lilac florals and a subtext of pepper. It is quite lively, refined and energized for the genre from the south of France, perhaps due to the schist and limestone soils in Maury (which is more famous for its sweet vins doux natural. This is almost silky texture with 14.5% abv heat and fine, drying tannin and minerality on the finish. The length is excellent. Drinks now. Tasted Feb 2026

A classic red from Maury, an appellation in Rousillon, this is a blend of grenache, samsó (a.k.a carignan), and syrah. I find its flavour profile enchanting - it is vibrant and vivid, showcasing both generosity and poise. Resinous herbs, some fresh, some gently roasted, and wild flowers are juxtaposed with ripe fruit flavours, including plums and blueberries. The palate is voluptuous, warm, and dense, supported by firm acidity and fine-grained tannins. The long, flavourful finish features a botanical bitterness, while warmth diffuses over the palate. This beautiful right-bank Bordeaux estate consistently produces high-value, elegant and classic Merlot dominant wines and is considered one of the most famous Château of this appellation. Located in Montagne-Saint-Emilion, Château Moulin Noir consists of seven hectares of vineyards on clay and limestone soils.
This château owes its name to a family feuddating back to the Middle Ages. Two brothers were arguing about their father’s legacy with the youngest brother being incredibly jealous that everything went to the elder. He was so jealous that he burnt the château to the ground - Moulin Noir translates to “blackened Mill”.

The length is excellent. Best 2025 to 2030

The wood is still very much in charge and if the 2014 showing at this stage is any indication then 2016 will need even more time to unwind. Château de Montfaucon
Just across the Rhone river from the beautiful vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the Lirac appellation extends itself on the low hills alongside the river. The history of Château de Montfaucon dates back to the 11th century when the castle's first tower was built. The castle's role in history was strategic; the Rhône River was the border between the French Kingdom and the Holy Roman German Empire. Montfaucon was one of many castles and fortresses along the Rhône River constructed to guard the border.
Rodolphe de Pins took over the family estate of Montfaucon in 1995 and subsequently rebuilt the winery and began practicing sustainable agriculture. He honed his winemaking skills in Barossa at Henschke and Vieux Telegraphe in Châteauneuf du Pape before returning to Lirac, so needless to say, his familiarity with the local varieties is well established.

Château de Parnay
Château de Parnay is the flagship of the AOC Saumur Champigny. The property is located along the Loire river, classified as UNESCO World Heritage, on the most reputable clay and limestone terroirs of the appellation. The historic property was taken over by Mathias Levron & Régis Vincenot in 2006 with the aim of restoring the nobility of this special place.
Drawing their strength from the authenticity of their values, they now cultivate 50 hectares of vines with the aim of producing exceptional wines in a way that respects the environment. They have been certified organic since 2013 and are about to be certified biodynamic too.
The Clos of Chemin des Murs is the jewel of the property! Coming from the imagination of it's orginal owner, Antoine Cristal, this Clos was built, planted and cultivated according to an unprecedented technique. On this half hectare of Chenin Blanc, each vine was planted on the north face of a stone wall. Through a hole in the stone the vine crosses through the wall and allowing the grapes to grow facing the southern sunshine. The vine is said to have its 'foot in the cool and belly in the sun'.

Notes of ripe red plums, blackberries, dark cherries, tobacco, dried leaves, and violets are interwoven here to form an elegant, engaging, and varietally representative flavour profile. The palate is densely flavoured but lithe, with fine-grained tannins and refreshing acids. The finish is long, layered, and captivating. Though it can be enjoyed now, I would cellar this for 2-3 years. Tasted January 2024.

This is a serious cab franc indeed - not so much in terms of weight and power, but in its complexity, poise and length. It’s a deeply coloured for franc. The nose shows fine, ripe raspberry, perfectly pitched by fresh herbs, tobacco and violet. It is loosely structured mid-palate, and a touch warm, with slightly green tannin. The length is excellent. I would age it a year or three. Tasted January 2024

Silky and refined, elegant but dense, this Saumur Champigny (cabernet franc) is a substantial and serious wine, with a high degree of textbook regional character, complete with a touch of green-herbal, varietal flavour. Tannins are fine and dusty, acids gently salty, and length good to very good. I'd suggest another year or two in the cellar to further refine the texture and develop complexity - potential I think is high. Tasted January 2024.

Domaine du Coulet - Matthieu Barret
Matthieu Barret was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975 and studied viticulture in Beaune.
He is the 7th generation vigneron and joined his grandfather in Cornas in 1997. Previously, his family had only been farming and selling grapes. He practices biodynamic viticulture, obtaining very low yields (23 hl/ha) and extraordinary quality. He describes his wines as being 100% grape, with a very low sulphite addition. His wines are extremely clean, and, true to the Cornas character. Domaine du Coulet was founded by Matthieu Barret’s grandfather after WWII, and over the years has supplied grapes to some of the best known producers in the Northern Rhône, including Chapoutier and Delas. While his father eschewed the agrarian lifestyle, opting instead for a career in international business, Matthieu knew early on that he wanted to be a vigneron. In 1998 at the age of only 23, he took over the family’s 25 acres of well-situated vines on the terraced hillsides of Cornas.
From the beginning, Matthieu has employed natural, organic practices and by 2002 (his second year of production) the domaine received its biodynamic certification. With each vintage, Matthieu has gained a better understanding of his vine parcels and through thoughtful experimentation, he now turns out a remarkable selection of Cornas wines that express the unique nuances of each micro-terroir. No new oak, no racking, minimal use of sulfur and no fining or filtration. Pure, sexy Syrah.

A rich concoction of blueberries, damson plums and dark cherries are joined by resinous herbs and pepper here. The palate is relatively approachable for a Cahors, with plentiful fine-grained, ripe and smooth tannins and lively acidity. I like the balance here between fruit and savoury herbs, and between firmness and pliability. The long, layered finish diffuses soft warmth all over the palate. Tasted February 2026.

The nose is nicely lifted and promising with classic pinot cherry fruit, considerable barrel toast and spice, and an evergreen forest scent. It is mid-weight, quite firm and well balanced with 12.5% alcohol, some minerality and again those chippy tannin, drying the finish. The length is very good to excellent. Best 2028 to 2032. Bodegas Puiggròs
Since 1843, the Puiggros family has been producing wines from their own vines in the Odena region of Catalunya for the family and close friends. Over generations they had come to realize that their vineyards and techniques were something worth sharing with the world. A sincere dedication to the terroir in their zone and the indigenous varieties that grow there, allows them to constantly discover ways to unlock all of the magic that lies within their land.
Starting with conscious and clean farming in the vineyard, they hand-harvest only the best fruit for their production, and ferment each vineyard separately in varying vessels to accentuate what the vines have to show; some in stainless steel, and many in clay amphora of differing sizes. All the while seeing very little sulfur use (if any) until bottling. Puiggros is pushing the quality of northeastern Spain's wines forward, and doing so in a clean and unique way.

The Hager Matthias winery is located in the small village of Mollands in the Kamptal area of Lower Austria. Matthias took over the 12-hectare land and the family business at an early age. Matthias has a vast knowledge about plants and insects, and about keeping the flora and fauna in harmony with the vines. Matthias Hager is one of the most experimental winemakers in the Kamptal region, Austria. He understood early how to work with different soil types from loess to clay. He established different product lines to highlight these differences: the blue one representing fresh, lively wines including Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc; and the brown line gravitating towards more earthy, flavourful produce and the red line stands for no sulphites!

Domaine de Pellehaut
"Pellehaut" gets its name from the Roman or medieval word pila (meaning any kind of solid, pillar-like construction). The presence two kilometres away of mosaics decorated with vines at the Gallo-Roman site of Séviac bears witness to the fact that vines were already grown at Pellehaut in Roman times.
Pellehaut follows a traditional, low-intervention approach to winemaking, using native yeasts from its own vineyards and avoiding thermovinification in favor of cooler fermentation to preserve varietal aromas. After fermentation, the wines are either kept cool in stainless steel tanks or aged for up to two years in fine-grain oak barrels from the Allier forests. Though not part of a prestigious appellation, the estate takes pride in its diverse range of 16 wines, aiming to offer authentic expressions of Gascogne that inspire curiosity and pleasantly surprise wine enthusiasts.

The site was a meeting place between the English, who occupied Aquitaine, and the French who wanted to reconquer their lands which had fallen under English rule following the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204) to Henry Plantagenet (marriage in 1152), the future King Henry II of England.
In 2013, Pascal Amoreau (14th generation of the family), then searching for exceptional terroirs, acquired the land of La Closerie. He decided to rename the estate "Closerie Saint Roc" in homage to its history. But La Closerie Saint Roc would above all be an opportunity for Pascal, his son Adrien, and Valérie Amoreau, as well as Harold Langlais, partners in this project, to revive a piece of local history and express their winemaking talents by producing exceptional wines.
Pascal, Adrien, Valerie and Harold continue, within their ecosystem, the ancestral philosophy and methods developed over 400 years by the Amoreau family – fifteen generations of history and know-how – which is now called biodynamics.

This very youthful and tightly wound Corton is refined, but also has a fascinating dark side. I love the candied orange, dried flower and hot dry earth character that is woven into the deep, beautifully ripe red fruit aromas. Great concentration and a stack of fine tannins on the compact, medium- to full-bodied palate. Very long, powerful licorice and spice finish. Drink or hold.

I love the violet aromas of this excellent Pommard village. Then on the compact, medium- to full-bodied palate there’s a wealth of licorice and wet earth alongside the ample black cherry fruit. Gentle tannins in the context of this commune, which is famous for firm wines, the velvet finish pulling you back for more. From two sites, including the part of Rugiens that isn’t 1er Cru. This Savigny-les-Beaune has more delicacy than a lot of wines from what is often considered a blockbuster vintage for red Burgundy. It’s brimming with sour cherries and just beginning to pick up some of the earthy notes of early maturity. Beautiful balance for a non-1er Cru wine from Savigny.
