Pearce Family Wines

In the early 2000's Nicholas Pearce was exposed to the garagiste movement in Bordeaux and was particularly inspired by négociants like Jean Luc Thunevin (Saint Emilion), James Sichel (Margaux) and Nicolas Potel (Beaune) from Burgundy.
After returning home to Ontario and starting his own wine company, he has had a hand in making 10+ wines in two hemispheres, 3 countries and 5 different appellations since the 2013 vintage.
Pearce Predhomme

Pearce Predhomme is a collaboration of like-minded individuals from around the globe. Founded with a mission to build and import wines from our favourite appellations while offering an unequaled value/quality ratio for the sommeliers & wine buyers in Ontario. This is a project between Toronto Sommelier and entrepreneur Will Predhomme and Ontario wine importer Nicholas Pearce they have partnered with Radford Dale in South Africa and NorthWest Wine Co. in Oregon to create these special cuvées.

From fruit picked right at the outset of a global pandemic, not merely challenging but during a time of naiveté and so much unknown. Nevertheless the team at Radford Dale did their due diligence for the négoce team of Nicholas Pearce and Will Predhomme and if this is not the richest most forward chenin they have made to date then it can’t be sure how any further vintages could ever take this to eleven. Just enough tension mind you but less cracker material than previous incantations exuded by lightning strikes. Winemaker extraordinaire Jacques de Klerk clearly listened to the vintage wind and global situation by stuffing this Old Vine ’20 with all the love and generosity it so deserved. Not suggesting the lack of tasting trials participation uncluttered de Klerk's mind but this is a very good vintage of this consistently well made wine. Drink 2021-2024. Tasted September 2021.

Another terrifically balanced vintage for Pearce & Predhomme's old vine chenin collaborative effort with Radford Dale in Stellenbosch, showing the customary ripe, yellow fleshed orchard fruit profile on a rivetingly dry, firm and taught frame. I love those balanced, juicy acids and the lingering finish, where a light spike of acetic acid emerges. Solid value yet again. Drink or hold into the mid-'20s. Tasted September 2021.

Pearce and Predhomme sure know how to pick 'em, so to speak. This small negociant label from Toronto agent and sommelier Nicholas Pearce and Will Predhomme seem to consistently nail this old vine, wild ferment chenin blanc of Stellenbosch origins . Heather, hay , pear and apple are generously served up on the palate with notes of white flower that trail on the finish. Featuring impressive depth of flavour for the price. Widely appealing style with excellent length. Tasted September 2021.

About the Winery
Radford Dale

Alex Dale who owns and manages both projects is an Englishman who grew up spending summers in Burgundy, France. He moved there in his late teens to follow a passion for winemaking and also opened a wine bar in Beaune. He lived in Burgundy for many years before moving to South Africa in 1998, starting Radford Dale with Ben Radford, an Australian. The idea was to produce wines using modern techniques and technology with a healthy respect for tradition, something Alex came to understand well while living in Burgundy.
Wines are made with minimal intervention in order to best express each vineyard’s individuality.Press Reviews

Vinum always delivers a lot of flavour at the price, combining tank and barrel-fermented components. Pear, beeswax and gentle oak flavours are embellished by tangy acidity and some baking spice sweetness.

Offering superb value for money at just R160, this is like a scaled-down rendition of Alex Dale's top wines. Taut and refreshing with wild yeast aromas and texture, a hint of oak spice and a core of crisp, tangy citrus and green apple fruit.

Château de Parnay

Château de Parnay is the flagship of the AOC Saumur Champigny. The property is located along the Loire river, classified as UNESCO World Heritage, on the most reputable clay and limestone terroirs of the appellation. The historic property was taken over by Mathias Levron & Régis Vincenot in 2006 with the aim of restoring the nobility of this special place.
Drawing their strength from the authenticity of their values, they now cultivate 50 hectares of vines with the aim of producing exceptional wines in a way that respects the environment. They have been certified organic since 2013 and are about to be certified biodynamic too.
The Clos of Chemin des Murs is the jewel of the property! Coming from the imagination of it's orginal owner, Antoine Cristal, this Clos was built, planted and cultivated according to an unprecedented technique. On this half hectare of Chenin Blanc, each vine was planted on the north face of a stone wall. Through a hole in the stone the vine crosses through the wall and allowing the grapes to grow facing the southern sunshine. The vine is said to have its 'foot in the cool and belly in the sun'.

This leads with a terrific nose very much in the varietal/regional idiom, honeyed, floral, apple and lemon zest-scented, complex and exotic, not to mention stony. The palate displays a similar level of poise and composure, cool, transparent yet with a heavy freight of flavour , and terrific length. This is really quite extraordinary wine, delicious now, but surely capable of a decade or so in the cellar. Top notch. Tasted March 2019.

The rare and elusive 100 per cent chenin blanc from Samur makes full use of clay-calcaire-tuffeau soils for this dry and piqued white wine. So crunchy and expressive with an expansive character that fills the mouth by making contact withy every nerve and pour. Benchmark and controlled explosive example, rare or otherwise. Drink 2020-2025. Tasted March 2020.

It is rare to come across fine Saumur chenin, a central Loire Valley appellation overshadowed by Vouvray. This is mid-weight, dry and quite firm classic with a fairly generous nose of pear, spice, vague fresh herbs and wet stone. It becomes quite dry and somewhat grapefruity bitter on the finish, trailing solid minerality as well. Very good to excellent length. Tasted March 2020.

Such a lovely nose here on this old vines white from Andrea and Chris Mullineux, in 2020 a blend of 2/3 chenin blanc, with decreasing proportions of clairette blanche, grenache blanc, semillon, viognier, and verdelho. According to Andrea Mullineux, 2020 was the first vintage in which the vines recovered from the previous three years' drought, re-discovering balance. And this wine is indeed spectacular, with beautiful balance of ripeness and freshness, a mix of delicacy and intensity that's hard to match. I love the pure white fleshed orchard fruit flavours, especially the fresh-ripe pear, elegant and refined. Exceptional length. I think perhaps the best vintage yet for this wine. Tasted July 2021.

Chenin Blanc is the marquee variety here, with support from 26% Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Semillon Gris, Viura and Verdelho, most of which is sourced from 37 to 70-year-old vines. Lemon, lime and wet stone flavours with some phenolic grip and remarkable palate length.

With a massive 365 grams of residual sugar, this is one intense sweet wine, made from airdried Chenin Blanc grapes left on mats. Intensely honeyed and spicy, with notes of peach and nectarine, subtle wood and marked volatility. Just needs a little more acidity. 2022-27
