About the Winery
Radford Dale
Radford Dale and The Winery of Good Hope are two brands made by the same people, in the same winery. The team behind these wineries has been an industry leader since the 1990s in chemical free farming, and more recently in low and no sulfur winemaking. They are a founding member of PIWOSA (Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa) which sets ethical, environmental and social uplift standards. Recognizing the social inequality present in South Africa Radford Dale has also set up a trust called Land of Hope to help facilitate bright futures for children, focusing heavily on education.
Alex Dale who owns and manages both projects is an Englishman who grew up spending summers in Burgundy, France. He moved there in his late teens to follow a passion for winemaking and also opened a wine bar in Beaune. He lived in Burgundy for many years before moving to South Africa in 1998, starting Radford Dale with Ben Radford, an Australian. The idea was to produce wines using modern techniques and technology with a healthy respect for tradition, something Alex came to understand well while living in Burgundy.
Wines are made with minimal intervention in order to best express each vineyard’s individuality.Press Reviews

95 Points - Christian Eedes
Fermented and matured in older oak for 11 months. Struck-match reduction precedes lime, lemon, a subtle herbal note and oatmeal on the nose. The palate is concentrated but not weighty or oily – pure fruit and fresh acidity before a dry finish. Precise and elegant.
Wine Anorak
95 Points - Jamie Goode
Finely aromatic with bright citrus fruit, showing some pear and apple richness, and a slight mealiness under the fruit. There’s real energy on the palate with a lovely acid line, some bright spiciness and plenty of texture. There’s a saline, mineral presence here providing tension and working nicely to balance out the slightly richer apple and pear notes. A beautifully complex expression of Elgin Chardonnay that’s quite special.

Decanter
95 Points - David Williams, Matthew Forster MW, Luis Gamiz
Matthew Forster, MW: Founded in 1917, Celler Masroig today manages 350ha of prime vineyard across Montsant. But it’s the up-to-the-minute winemaking skills, led by head winemaker Carles Escolar, that make it stand out on the Catalan scene. Maisroig has always been committed to the quality of Carignan on red clay soils, and the variety dominates the blend of Les Sorts (with just 5% Garnacha in the 2020). After a traditional fermentation, the wine is aged for 17 months in new French oak and 12 months in bottle before release.
David Williams: Ripe, rich, maturing nose with creamy blackberry and a cut of orange pithiness and black cherry. Lots of tannin and extract, but enough fruit to carry through to more creamy blackberry on the finish, which contrasts with a rosemary-and-orange bitterness.Matthew Forster MW: Savoury black olive and bark characters, brooding black fruit. Succulent, with fine concentration and balance.
Luis Gamiz: Dark fruit, spice, great mid-palate concentration and intensity, firm, tight-knit tannins. Round and full-bodied but very good integration and a long finish.
