Domaine du Coulet - Matthieu Barret

Matthieu Barret was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975 and studied viticulture in Beaune.
He is the 7th generation vigneron and joined his grandfather in Cornas in 1997. Previously, his family had only been farming and selling grapes. He practices biodynamic viticulture, obtaining very low yields (23 hl/ha) and extraordinary quality. He describes his wines as being 100% grape, with a very low sulphite addition. His wines are extremely clean, and, true to the Cornas character. Domaine du Coulet was founded by Matthieu Barret’s grandfather after WWII, and over the years has supplied grapes to some of the best known producers in the Northern Rhône, including Chapoutier and Delas. While his father eschewed the agrarian lifestyle, opting instead for a career in international business, Matthieu knew early on that he wanted to be a vigneron. In 1998 at the age of only 23, he took over the family’s 25 acres of well-situated vines on the terraced hillsides of Cornas.
From the beginning, Matthieu has employed natural, organic practices and by 2002 (his second year of production) the domaine received its biodynamic certification. With each vintage, Matthieu has gained a better understanding of his vine parcels and through thoughtful experimentation, he now turns out a remarkable selection of Cornas wines that express the unique nuances of each micro-terroir. No new oak, no racking, minimal use of sulfur and no fining or filtration. Pure, sexy Syrah.

This is a very classy Beaune Premier Cru white from Les Perrières, a vineyard name that comes up time and again in Burgundy, and which references the many limestone quarries in the region. The nose is all ripe white and yellow-fleshed orchard fruit, pears, golden delicious apple and nectarine, with very well managed and integrated wood (45% new barrels), still a year or three away from prime enjoyment. There's considerable depth and structure on offer, as well as genuine density and length. A fine wine, best after 2024, or hold into the early '30s. Tasted May 2022.

Planted in 1999, this lieu-dit specific Côte de Nuits Villages delivers a marvelously stony and floral-fragrant expression, light-mid-weight at 12.5% alcohol declared, and an overall firm and mineral profile - a wine lovers wine. I love the succulence and the vibrancy, even if length and depth are merely good to very good. More for sipping and enjoying rather than deep contemplation, but plenty of enjoyment there is. From a super high-density parcel of vines, 12,000 per hectare planted in 1998, harvested rather early in the last week of August and also very ripe and 14% alcohol declared, it was subsequently aged in 40% new barrels. The net result is a bold and structured wine, billowing with dark cherry fruit, palate coating, voluptuous and mouth filling. Abundant tannins are fully enveloped in fruit; extract and length is excellent. This needs another 3-5 years minimum before engaging, and even better, hold into the early or mid '30s for a more evolved and complete expression. This has genuine density and depth, also fine purity and palate presence. Tasted May 2022.

Who was Jean Ferté you ask? Monsieur Ferté was in fact the one who persuaded Nicolas Potel's father Gerard to make the move to Bourgogne and the rest as they say is history. Great uncle Ferté led a syndicate that was able to purchase Domaine de la Pousse d’Or in 1964, historically a part of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti until the French Revolution. Two plots totalling 0.77 hectares make up this Savigny Les Beaune with the oldest vines dating back to 1962. A pitchy and grippy pinot here in 2020 with mildly resinous evergreen notes that seem to partially define the vintage, especially from Beaune. Also seems to indicate a healthy level of stem inclusion. Really purple fruit and formidable tannin, a fine if currently demanding dichotomy. Drink 2024-2028. Tasted May 2022.

From a high-density 1956 planting of pinot noir, aged in 20% new wood and the rest in used barrels, this is complex and perfumed Saint Romain, especially spicy and stemmy in a good way, adding an impression of freshness and counter-balancing the ripe red berry fruit. The palate is mid-weight, properly firm and structured, with high sapidity and excellent length, and well-integrated, dusty tannins that still need some time to settle in. In the context of the region, I have to say this is an excellent value red Burgundy. I'd cellar for another 2-3 years minimum before enjoying, or hold until the end of the decade without concern. Great complexity and depth. Tasted May 2022.

A notably ripe and forward vintage from Domaine de Bellene's 2020 Volnay Les grands Poisots, showing slightly muddled fruit, dark and fleshy, also a sheen of new wood spice, vanilla (25% new wood). The palate is fullish and fleshy, densely packed and thickly structured, with lots of extract to report. Overall length, depth and complexity are moderate for the time being; this clearly needs more time in bottle, though will likely remain a more four-square example of Volnay rather than a delicate and perfumed wine. Think power over finesse. Tasted May 2022.
