The history of Château la Courançonne begins all the way back in 1631 when the vines were first planted on the stoney soils of the Plan de Dieu. After the French revolution, the Sieur Correnson (Lord of Péculette) was granted authorization by the Pope to buy the estate and bestowed it with its current name. Today Château la Courançonne has grown to cover 40 ha of Plan de Dieu, 13 ha of Seguret, 3 ha of Rasteau and 6 ha of IGP. The estate was eventually acquired by well-known Southern Rhone heros, Domaine Autrand in 2019, who vowed to continue to vinify with the same passion & consistency of quality they bring to all of their wines.

Made from a blend of Grenache, Syrah, & Mourvèdre, expect to find a ripe fruit medley on the nose with aromas of black cherry & raspberries, swathed in sweet & savoury spices of cloves & cracked black pepper. The palate reveals pronounced fruit & liquorice intensity balanced by velvety tannins.

Pair with slow cooked caramelized dishes, creamy cheeses or chocolate desserts with red fruit coulis.

90 Points - Michael Godel

Rasteau within the larger appellation that is Côtes du Rhône Villages makes full and beneficial use of grenache as the glue to which syrah and mourvèdre adhere for not just seamless but punch above weight red blends. As the crow flies Châteauneuf-du-Pape is but a mere 24 kms away and there are times when a Rasteau can mimic, albeit softly, the wines of that most famous Rhône appellation. Like here, with some fantasy involved, but nevertheless this is a fine local example. Drink 2023-2026.
