The Canary Islands are a hidden and forgotten archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Morocco. Viñátigo has been recuperating native grape varieties in the Canary Islands since 1990. After several years learning about each grape making single varietal wines, the winery has embarked on exploring the volcanic identity of the North-West of Tenerife through a limited series of signature wines.
This Mixed Case explores these wines:
1 bottle x Viñátigo Pet-Nat de Listán Blanco de Canarias 2020 - Mixed Case Exclusive! A delicious Pet-Nat made from 100-year old vines of Listan Blanco de Canarias farmed in the highlands of Icod de los Vinos, where soils resulted from the most recent volcanic eruptions of Teide Volcano towards the north of the island.
2 bottles x Viñátigo Elaboraciones Ancestrales Orange 2020. This Orange wine is made from ungrafted Gual vines planted in small plots in the northwest of Tenerife, around 200 meters above sea level. The grapes macerate with the skins in concrete egg tanks. Smelling Elaboraciones Ancestrales Orange is a magical experience: spiced herbal aromas of rosemary, bay leaves and incense. It has a rich and unctuous palate of orchard fruits and fragrant pepper. The finish is long lasting with a subtle touch of tannin. One of the most elegant orange wines we have ever tried.
1 bottle x Viñátigo Ensamblaje Tinto 2019. By blending different red grape varieties, Viñátigo's goal with their Ensamblaje red is to showcase the volcanic minerality of the northwest of Tenerife. Depending on the conditions of the vintage, the proportions and grapes blended in this wine may vary. The grapes are harvested and vinified separetely. The Ensamblaje Tinto has a spicy, firey nose with strong pepper, forest mushroom and jam. On the palate it is big and muscular with firm tannins that allow the ground fruit notes to really show themselves.
1 bottle x Viñátigo Elaboraciones Ancestrales Tinto 2018. Two different grape varieties coming from two different volcanic terroirs come together in a delicate and fine wine. A half-and-half blend of Tintilla and Baboso, fermented whole-cluster (including the stems) in open wooden vats with occasional punch-downs. Black-fruited with incredible density of flavour, minerality and length.
1 bottle x Viñátigo Malvasia Aromatica Clasico 2009 (500ml). This sweet wine is Viñátigo's homage to what the Canary Island Wines represented in the past: the most appreciated wine in the world. It has aromas of bitter orange peel, rose petals, dried apricots and almonds. It has beautiful notes of jasmine and other white flowers and an unwavering acidity and roundness on the palate.
