Rich & Fruity

Matthias Hager's winery has about 13ha of vineyards in and around the small wine-growing village of Mollands. All of his vineyards are cultivated biodynamically according to Demeter. The strength of this family business is its diversity. Loess, clay and different kinds of primary rock (mica shist, gneiss, etc.) can be found in the northern part of Kamptal.

Riesling is also called the king of the white wines. It is a very typical grape variety in Kamptal and needs spares and stony soil. Only on this soil it develops its typical character. The harvest is rather little; therefore the quality is especially good.

The Riesling Alte Rebe comes - as its name implies - from old vines. The grapes are planted in the 1960-ies on a clay soil with stony base at 320m above sea-level. Because of their age the quantity is rather little but the quality is therefore very high. The grapes and berries are very little but the potential for maturity is very high. The harvest is always rather late.

A part of Riesling Alte Reben 18 was fermented on the skin (10%) and aged in oak barrels. The rest made its spontaneous fermentation in steel tank. Combined it is a very complex white wine with a good structure, a nice mouth-feeling and a mix of fruitiness and minerality.

Great with Moroccan Chicken or a tagine dish.

About the Winery

Matthias Hager

The Hager Matthias winery is located in the small village of Mollands in the Kamptal area of Lower Austria. Matthias took over the 12-hectare land and the family business at an early age. He aims to produce the best quality wine possible and to focus on being in balance with nature. The lands are cultivated according to biodynamic principles and are certified Demeter. Matthias has a vast knowledge about plants and insects, and about keeping the flora and fauna in harmony with the vines. Matthias Hager is one of the most experimental winemakers in the Kamptal region, Austria. He understood early how to work with different soil types from loess to clay. He established different product lines to highlight these differences: the blue one representing fresh, lively wines including Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc; and the brown line gravitating towards more earthy, flavourful produce and the red line stands for no sulphites!

90 points - Michael Godel

Great and sound riesling here from Hager Matthias, drier than many, smart and yet already showing a lovely sense of development. Not such a bad thing and in fact this is drinking with a perfectly amount of next level complexity. Very mineral and just right. Drink 2021-2023. Tasted November 2021.

Judging by the surprising gold to orange colour this has perhaps seen skin contact with late harvested fruit. It seems to be a very intentional almost experimental style heading into orange. The nose is rather soft but complex with some honey, spice, pumpkin and earthiness. It is full bodied, barely off-dry, creamy yet firmly anchored by good acidity and some minerality. The focus and length are excellent. Interesting and well made but the problem is no label indication of the style. Tasted Nov 2021
