Blank Canvas is the personal wine range of husband and wife team, Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson, MW. With a focus on Marlborough, Syrah from Hawkes Bay and Pinot Noir from Central Otago, the Blank Canvas wines are exciting, small-batch and increasingly recognised as the avant-garde of New Zealand wine.

An incredibly textured, savoury wine. It parades a bounty of fleshy white nectarine and orchard fruit, flint-focused precision and a grainy, honeyed richness. Its vividly sketched acidity allows it to carry the powerful but savoury oak in a defined yet impressive manner. The full solids fermentation with 100% wild yeast and 14 months lees ageing without battonage has given multitudinous layers of complexity. This is a wine for drinking now for its crystalline purity, or cellaring and reaping the benefits of tertiary development in many years to come.

With its citrus and hints of white pepper, this wine is a beautiful dish with ceviche, any grilled white fish or chicken infused with orange or paired with an orange and almond salad.

About the Winery

Blank Canvas

Blank Canvas is the personal wine range of husband and wife team, Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson.

Having completed over fifty back-to-back vintages in both New Zealand and Europe as an award-winning winemaking consultant, Matt together with Sophie felt it was time to create and build a wine brand together, with their first vintage in 2013. Blank Canvas embodies their own expression of art-meets-science with single-vineyard, small batch wines that push the sensory boundaries and challenge winemaking orthodoxy.

Winemaker Matt Thomson’s science background defines the parameters of his winemaking canvas, allowing creativity to flow within those bounds. Together with business partner, Master of Wine student and wife Sophie Parker-Thomson, Matt is striving to achieve the unique winemaking fusion between art and science, pushing the boundaries to capture a unique expression.

Sophie recently obtained her Master of Wine title,  joining 149 women MWs globally with the total number of MWs in the world now 418 in 32 countries.

The Real Review

Impressive purity and power with peach, nectarine fruit flavours together with a subtle struck-flint mineral, reductive character and a pleasing savoury note. A taut, elegant chardonnay that’s good now but promises to get even better with bottle age.

Sophisticated and complex bouquet of Chardonnay with aromas of gun flint and oak spices, moments of lemon and grapefruit then yellow fleshed orchard fruit. The second and third sniffs reveal a mineral, stone and textured complexity. The bouquet overall is very youthful and vibrant with the messages of oak strong. On the palate equally expressive, youthful and complex. Flavours reflect the nose with citrus then oak. Fine wood tannins with a smoky edge, medium+ acidity and palate trill. While this wine is very young it has fantastic potential that Chardonnay fans should invest in and cellar some bottles. Best drinking from early 2022 through 2026+

Fermented in 40% new French oak puncheons, the 2019 Reed Chardonnay is strongly marked by the process and subsequent 14-month élevage, with scents of toasted grain and nuts prominent on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with its lemony fruit character doing a fine job supporting the wood-derived notes. There's a sense of creamy generosity leading into a harmonious, refreshing finish that deftly marries elements of oak and fruit.
