Grosjean

The Grosjean family traces its roots back to the village of Fornet in the high mountain passes of the Valle d’Aosta, Italy’s smallest wine region, known as Valgrisenche where they raised cattle and made wine since 1969. Grosjean produces stunning high altitude wines from indigenous varieties such as Petit Rouge, Doucet and Fumin as well as international varieties such as Gamay, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio.
Sustainable farming techniques have been in place since 1975: only organic fertilizers are applied and no pesticides or herbicides are used. Natural yeasts are utilized for fermentation.
Today, the winery is run by the third generation: four brothers working together and making some of the most exciting wines in this tiny and magic region.

Claude Riffault

Based in the village of Sury-en-Vaux, the Stéphane Riffault works 33 different parcels in 8 different lieu-dits spread across 4 villages. The 13.5 hectares of vines are certified organic and biodynamic. Unlike most Sancerre producers, the entire harvest is carried out by hand and an extensive sorting takes place before the grapes are crushed.
Most of the domaine’s holdings are planted on the soft limestone soil called terres blanches with some parcels on calliottes and silex. With Riffault having studied and worked in Burgundy (and closely with Olivier Leflaive), it’s easy to see the Burgundian influence in Stéphane’s wines. The mastery of minerality standing shoulder to shoulder with the wood is rarely duplicated in Sancerre.

Taken from San Sebastiano area, vines 15-20 years old in Monforte d’Alba. “We have a special view of the nebbiolo," tells Daniele Gaia. "In our point of view it has to show the character of the grape, flowers, drinkability and approachable, not a baby Barolo." And so Réva attacks with a gentle touch, a short and cold maceration to secure nebbiolo kept in a “light” vein, with evident acidity. Carries the youthful "splendore" of beautiful red fruit. A precociousness unhindered, on hinges, in ultra comfortable balance. Drink 2020-2024. Tasted January 2020.

This is a beautiful, ripe Barolo with a solid center palate of ripe fruit and firm tannins. It’s full-bodied and powerful. The intense tannins are focused and integrated, blending into the wine. Vibrant finish. Real deal. Needs two or three years to soften.

Another highly seasoned nebbiolo of rather dark red fruit and barrel piques that create spikes and valleys in the wine. Hangs on with enough energy to see the acidity match the fruit stride for stride. There's a sense of structure to see this '16 last for a decade strong and long. Drinking window will open shortly so the temptation will be to imbibe often and early, thereby fertilizing the narcotic poppy of drinking pleasure. Drink 2022-2030. Tasted January 2020.

Villa Calcinaia

Villa Calcinaia is situated in the centre of Chianti Classico near the town of Greve-in-Chianti. This historic estate has been home to the Counts Capponi since 1524, and is maintained by Sebastiano Capponi and his brother Niccolo. In 1992, Count Sebastiano Capponi became the first in the history of the family to manage the winery personally, giving a new life to the vineyards and the cellar.
The family owns 200 hectares of land planted with olive trees, vines and pine trees. Organic farming is the standard at Villa Calcinaia where 75 acres of vineyard are planted with Sangiovese, Merlot, Canaiolo, Grechetto, Vernaccia, Trebbiano, and Malvasia. Through every vintage, the wines are crafted with food in mind. They are balanced, elegant, perfumed, and savoury yet refreshing with restrained vigour and intensity that ensures longevity.

Hard to imagine how a 2017 Chianti Classico can raise the bar across all its constituent parts as this from Conti Cappone is able to effect. The level of primary meeting intellectual notability is well, notable. Fruit rises up to meet acidity and acidity to rise for the challenge of sweet tannin. The bond and the chain is unbreakable. In Annata. No less. Drink 2021-2027. Tasted February 2020.

Ripe, open, with a fine mix of fruit and herbal spice, and low wood impact, this shows good succulence and juiciness on the palate, a saline sapidity that draws additional sips. Good to very good length, one of the successes of the vintage, with elegance and transparency. Drink 2020-2025. Tasted February 2020.

Casa Los Frailes

Casa Los Frailes is located in the valley called “land of Alforins”, south west inland province of Valencia, with average altitude of 650-700 meters above sea level. The valley is located between two mountains range, on the east the Mediterranean Sea (50km) and on the west the main “plateau” of La Mancha. Casa Los Frailes (“Cals Frares” in old valencian local language) takes their name from the Jesuit Friars that used to live in the Estate over two centuries (XVII to XVIII). The Casa Los Frailes estate now belongs to the Velázquez family and has for over 250 years, today the 13th generation runs the winery.
Frontrunners in organic agriculture and biodynamics, the estate consists of 162 hectare with vineyards, Mediterranean forest, almond and olive trees and a unique terroir. The main variety was (and still is) the Monastrell, cultivated in bush vines. "As inheritors of such legacy, we believe our wines should be part and transmit the history of our estate, as this history is obviously unique. In today's interconnected world, wines are more and more uniform, but we are committed to elaborate authentic and different wines, loyal to our personality and our history."

This is a deeply coloured blend, with a lifted, strident nose of blueberry, cassis, rosemary and some meaty character. It is notably green and almost sappy on the palate. Quite full bodied, fairly rich yet the acidity is high, as is the alcohol (14%). Tannins are well integrated and firm. The length is excellent. Very distinctive and well done. Tasted October 2019

About the Winery
Zuani

Zuani winery is located in the heart of Collio, Friuli, a hidden appellation between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. Coming from a long tradition of winemakers in Croatia that goes back to the 19th century, Patrizia Felluga saw her dream come true when she acquired the estate and the vineyards in 2001. Today, her son and daughter have taken over the winery; producing exclusively white wines. Everything hinges on one exceptionally well exposed “cru”, or vineyard, on a gentle hillside where about eleven acres of vines and gardens surround the Zuani cellar.
The varietals planted are Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon, a carefully chosen range that produced the first vintage of Zuani Collio Bianco. The Zuani winery embodies the Felluga family winemaking heritage and expresses the fundamental unity of the traditional aspects of Friulian varieties with their more modern side.

Here's a solid, mid-weight pinot grigio with better structure and depth than the expected. It seems to be a bit riper with classic peach, linden flower and blanched almonds. It is medium weight, firm, fresh and very well balanced. Excellent length, with a touch of minerality. The length is excellent. Tasted December 2020

The family farms in the Collio DOC of Friuli Venezia Giulia where the hills of Giasbana encroach upon Slovenia in the far northeastern corner of Italy. While ribolla gialla, friulano, malvasia and sauvignon may dominate the white wine scene it is pinot grigio that is on the rise. Not a ubiquitous one but part of a focused, terroir-driven community. Zuani’s Sodevo is more Collio than pinot grigio but that being said it is so peach fleshy, unctuously arriving with mouthfeel, next level fruit sweetness and extra-über grigio texture. Surely apposite to the oft amazing collection of golden-hued, skin-contact, highly herbal and mineral-laden whites of Collio. This one is something other, so clean and fresh. Drink 2020-2023. Tasted December 2020.

A pinot grigio of above average flavour intensity and richness, this is clearly quality wine from low yielding vines. There's an uncommon richness and roundness, leaning more towards the prototypical Alsatian 'gris' style, yet with Italian flair and verve. It crosses a spectrum of flavours from citrus to orchard fruit, with notable floral and stony contributions, and a lightly smoky, sulfidic edge. Very good length. Good stuff. Tasted December 2020.
