Mullineux is a highly-focused, family-run winery located near the village of Riebeek Kasteel in South Africa’s Swartland region. Founded in 2007 by Andrea and Chris Mullineux, the winery quickly gained international recognition for its hand-crafted, distinctive wines. In 2013, Chris and Andrea partnered with Analjit Singh and, alongside founding partner Peter Dart, established a parallel winery in Franschhoek called Leeu Passant. The wines produced by Leeu Passant are multi-regional bottlings, inspired by the classic, age-worthy wines of the Cape from the 1960s, '70s, and '80s.
About the Swartland: While viticulture in the Western Cape is relatively young, the region's geology is ancient. Mullineux’s vines are planted on some of the oldest viticultural soils on Earth. In the Swartland, three primary soil types have evolved from the region's dominant parent materials: shale/schist, granite, and iron-based soils, each imparting unique characteristics to the wines. The climate is ideal for natural farming practices, allowing for a hands-off approach to winemaking. It’s a rugged yet beautiful landscape, perfectly suited for this craft.
We invite you to experience the pure expression of the Swartland and beyond through the exceptional wines of the Mullineux Family

72.4% Chenin Blanc, 6.4% Semillon, 6.3% Clairette Blanche, 6.3% Grenache Blanc, 6.2% Viognier and 2.4% Verdelho. Matured for 11 months in older 500-litre barrels and one 2000-litre foudre. Alc: 13.4%. The nose is still rather primary with top notes of floral perfume, hay, herbs and spice before white peach while the palate is pure and zesty with a pithy finish. That much lighter and more restrained than 2021.

The 2023 Straw Wines comes from the same vineyard as usual, harvested from 45-year-old vines that produce high acidities. It underwent no malo due to the high natural concentration of malic acid during the 4 week drying process on the farm. This has 335g/l of residual sugar with a crucial 11g/l acidity. The bouquet is enticingly intense and beautifully defined, oozing with wild honey, quince and clementine. The palate is impeccably balanced with a killer line of acidity that slices through the tangy honeyed fruit. Almost crystalline on the finish, it lingers long in the mouth with amazing purity.

Showing mango stone and baked apple notes with hints of juniper spice and lemon cream. Grapefruit, too. Full-bodied, phenolic and broadly textured, with excellent flavour concentration. Comes back together at the end with a stony restraint. Drink or hold.

Displaying a softer nose with a dusty and ripe fruit condition, the 2022 Schist Chenin Blanc displays a more approachable expression with aromas of waxy apples and a broad, open accessibility. Medium-bodied, the palate is abroad and ready for action, showing succulent acidity with notes of juicy peaches and Honeycrisp apple before concluding with a ripe, succulent finish. Inviting aromas of grapefruit, flint, peach fuzz, wet stone and dried herbs. Medium-bodied with tight structure. Linear and driven with lovely mineral and fresh character. Crystalline. Complex and persistent. Already a pleasure but this will really show its potential with time. Sustainable. Drink or hold.

Red and black berries, olive, fynbos, cured meat and white pepper on the nose while the palate is pure and poised – lovely clarity of fruit, bright acidity and powdery tannins, the finish long and savoury. Made from 100% whole-cluster grapes, the 2021 Granite Syrah is dense with a firm, rocky core and fresh layers of spicy red and black fruit tones that erupt from the glass. With immense mineral tension and fine-grained tannins, this will need some time to come around but will indeed finish strong. Your patience will be rewarded; give the wine time.

The 2021 Iron Syrah probably has the most nuanced bouquet - very cohesive with intense blackberry, blueberry, and white pepper scents, the most backward of the three single vineyard sites. The palate is medium bodied with finely chiseled and a keen thread of acidity, but real structure and density, layers of mineral rich black fruit fruit laced with black pepper and graphite towards the finish. Superb.

Bursting with a fresh and juicy nose, the 2021 Iron Syrah is ripe with red-fruited elements of dark cherry and spiced red plum before showing a delicate, rocky essence that sways with notes of turned earth and red peppercorn. Medium to full-bodied, the palate clamps down with firm tannins that grow across the gum line and will need some time but still serve as a testament that this beautiful Syrah has plenty of life left to give. Nicely done!
