About the Winery
Matthias Hager

The Hager Matthias winery is located in the small village of Mollands in the Kamptal area of Lower Austria. Matthias took over the 12-hectare land and the family business at an early age. He aims to produce the best quality wine possible and to focus on being in balance with nature. The lands are cultivated according to biodynamic principles and are certified Demeter. Matthias has a vast knowledge about plants and insects, and about keeping the flora and fauna in harmony with the vines. Matthias Hager is one of the most experimental winemakers in the Kamptal region, Austria. He understood early how to work with different soil types from loess to clay. He established different product lines to highlight these differences: the blue one representing fresh, lively wines including Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc; and the brown line gravitating towards more earthy, flavourful produce and the red line stands for no sulphites!

Great and sound riesling here from Hager Matthias, drier than many, smart and yet already showing a lovely sense of development. Not such a bad thing and in fact this is drinking with a perfectly amount of next level complexity. Very mineral and just right. Drink 2021-2023. Tasted November 2021.

Judging by the surprising gold to orange colour this has perhaps seen skin contact with late harvested fruit. It seems to be a very intentional almost experimental style heading into orange. The nose is rather soft but complex with some honey, spice, pumpkin and earthiness. It is full bodied, barely off-dry, creamy yet firmly anchored by good acidity and some minerality. The focus and length are excellent. Interesting and well made but the problem is no label indication of the style. Tasted Nov 2021

Tasted side by side with the estate’s Alte Reben Ried Steinleiten Riesling Reserve and could not more different, for obvious reasons and also those less so. They being texture and aerosol mainly, with orange spray, all the citrus otherwise and more mineral than one could dig up from tract of Urgestein soil. Quite classic in many respects, very textured like a salve dissolving on the palate and such grippy, grape tannin and salted finish. Drink 2021-2024. Tasted November 2021.

About the Winery
Gilvesy Pincészet

Hungarian expat Róbert Gilvesy moved back to his homeland from Canada, and began building the Gilvesy winemaking empire on the former Esterházy estate on Szent György Hill. Thanks to years of hard work, the Hegymagas-based facility now includes a modern building complex and about 13 hectares of vineyards, in addition to being the home of the family. The area is shaped by 6 million years old volcanoes, where indigenous and international varieties grow organically.
Robert’s absolute admiration for nature and the terroir translates into an immense respect for the environment. By farming using organic practices, the soils and the vines stay healthy. In the winery, by letting nature take its course without controlling the processes, and using local resources, such as Hungarian oak barrels, Gilvesy promotes and protects the Balaton region.

Regional wine from five-year old vines. Wild ferment, whole bunch, large Hungarian oak and a bit of stainless steel. Fresh, vivid, sweetly fruited and a bit spicy. Supple and bright, with a pepper and spice edge to the cherry and berry fruits, with a slightly tangy finish. Lovely purity and freshness here. Some fine green hints, with a crystalline quality on the finish. Shows freshness and delicacy with lovely purity to the fruit: this is low in alcohol but properly ripe.

A single-vineyard wine, from the most western vineyard, at 280 m (the highest). Wild ferment, and aged in large Hungarian oak barrels (1000 litres, older). This was the last fermented, and because the vintage was compressed they had to use a stainless steel fermenter where it wasn’t possible to do whole-bunch at all. Juicy, spicy and with some black cherry aromatics: sweetly aromatic and enticing. The palate has nice focus and concentration with good acidity under the supple black cherry fruit. Really expressive and vital with sleek, smooth black fruits and hints of tar and citrus peel. Nice black cherry and blackberry fruit. Lovely floral elegance to this wine. This improved greatly being opened in advance.

About the Winery
Domaine Muré

The Muré family has been winegrowers in the region of Rouffach since 1650. In 1935, Alfred Muré, René’s grandfather, bought 32 acres of family-monopole vineyard name Clos St. Landelin, an area that has been described as the best of Alsace Grand Cru since the 7th Century.
Today, René Muré, the 11th generation of the family, along with his children, Véronique and Thomas, are responsible for running their exceptional Grand Cru vineyard and neighbouring terroirs using biodynamic methods. Until this day, they persist in hand-picking every single grape, and focus on crafting wines that preserve the family’s credo. The resulting wines are some of Alsace's finest – powerful, elegant, and age-worthy.

Cider and lime-zest aromas are lean and a bit shy on the nose of this wine. A mousse of small, dense bubbles packs a wallop of acidity with bright, stony lime, but a delicate, powdery magnolia note adds complexity and softness.

An undeniably satisfying cabernet sauvignon. Jammy in flavour but not hot. Offering a moderate degree of spice and a good degree of balance. Wonderfully concentrated with ripe but not insignificantly grippy tannins. A thoughtfully produced wine with very good length. Tasted June 2020.

Matías Riccitelli

Matías started his boutique winery in 2009, located in Las Compuertas at 1100 meters above sea level. It is the highest area of Lujan de Cuyo, and here he tends 20 hectares of ungrafted old vineyards. Matías also works with small, independent growers that own their lands at the bottom of the Andes halfway between 1000 and 1700 meters above sea level - in Gualtallary, Chacayes, Altamira and La Carrera.
All harvests are conducted by hand and fermentation takes place in small concrete vats and concrete eggs. Purity and delicacy in winemaking are prized by Matías and great care is taken in preserving the fruit’s singularity in order to obtain vibrant wines.

About the Winery
Scribe Winery

The winery–founded in 2007 on a property that pioneered pre-prohibition Sonoma Valley winemaking–is managed by fourth-generation California farmers and brothers, Andrew and Adam Mariani. Andrew and Adam believe that the best wines are a result of a healthy relationship between man and nature, and that a vineyard managed in harmony with the greater ecosystem results in more site-specific wines that represent a sense of time and place. When vinified with non-interventionist methods, the result is a distinct wine that faithfully reflects what the vineyard naturally expresses.

A funky, earthy tinge on the nose of this wine also references fresh chalkiness and something lactic. The palate wipes any funkiness away with spankingly fresh, ripe and juicy stone fruit that is pervaded by zesty citrus. An attractive texture already reveals chalkiness and a core of mouthwatering pithiness. Lovely now (but decant), the wine will show more of its stony depth with bottle age. Drink now–2035.

All of Louis Moreau's Valmur vines face south, so this wine can be quite rich. For the first time in 2017 it was unwooded, which has added more zip and life to the waxy, fresh and leesy palate, with stone fruit sweetness and a tangy finish.

About the Winery
Casa Los Frailes

Casa Los Frailes is located in the valley called “land of Alforins”, south west inland province of Valencia, with average altitude of 650-700 meters above sea level. The valley is located between two mountains range, on the east the Mediterranean Sea (50km) and on the west the main “plateau” of La Mancha. Casa Los Frailes (“Cals Frares” in old valencian local language) takes their name from the Jesuit Friars that used to live in the Estate over two centuries (XVII to XVIII). The Casa Los Frailes estate now belongs to the Velázquez family and has for over 250 years, today the 13th generation runs the winery.
Frontrunners in organic agriculture and biodynamics, the estate consists of 162 hectare with vineyards, Mediterranean forest, almond and olive trees and a unique terroir. The main variety was (and still is) the Monastrell, cultivated in bush vines. "As inheritors of such legacy, we believe our wines should be part and transmit the history of our estate, as this history is obviously unique. In today's interconnected world, wines are more and more uniform, but we are committed to elaborate authentic and different wines, loyal to our personality and our history."

I loved the subtly Mediterranean nose of the 2018 Caliza, a pure Monastrell from limestone-rich soils on the Casa Los Frailes property. It has a bright ruby color and a lively palate with freshness and very fine tannins. It's varietal and shows the soil and vintage character. This was my clear favorite from the 2018 'soil' bottlings. Drink date: 2020-2025.
