Garage Wine Co was literally started in a garage in 2001, by Etobicoke expat Derek Mossman and his wife Pilar Miranda. Since then, the dynamic duo have chosen to revive old vineyards in marginalized Chilean communities. They work mostly in the regions of Maule and Itata where they make highly coveted wines.
Old vines. Still young and austere. The aromatics display a wonderfully crisp, pure delineated red cherry and a blue fruit scented top note with plenty of granitic minerality and graphite in support. The nose is floral, elegant becoming deeper and more nuanced with time in the glass. The palate shows great freshness with a thread of fine acidity going through its backbone. Spice and mineral-accented aromas of red and blue fruit joined by slowly emerging violet and notes of murtilla. Sappy and concentrated yet lithe and sultry, with energetic black raspberry and floral pastille flavours on the mid-palette and a bracing suggestion of blood orange that adds bite to the back half. Long, long life ahead.

The overall quality in the Maule of the 2019 vintage is a cut above the rest. An unusually cool spring was followed by ten days of extremely high temperature peaks late in the summer in which the accumulation of sugars was very quick, but this did not affect the quality of the crop.
Very fine-grained, young chalky tannins and that Truqui texture we have all come to love. Characterful, floral, subtle and elegant… …understated and layered-- driven by florality & finesse.

This is a single-plot wine coming from the Bagual Vineyard, located near the banks of the Perquilauquen river. A river that (very unusual for Chile!) flows from the Coastal Mountains East towards the Andes passing through Caliboro bringing granitic silt with it. The expressive and aromatic nose of the 2016 Bagual Vineyard made Luis Gutierrez from Robert Parker think of a vermouth or a Barolo Chinato, with tons of aromatic herbs, spices and flowers. It has abundant, fine-grained tannins and a powerful mouthfeel, while at the same time, having elegance and balance.
Wines made from Carignan are ideal with richer poultry dishes such as turkey or duck, roasted pork, or even a meaty beef brisket.

Plantings of Mourvèdre have yielded excellent results, allowing the winery to learn more about about the terroir and prompting the creation of more adventurous wines. This wine presents hints of graphite, slate, and blueberries with added aromas of herbs and spices. Tense on the palate with rich acidity and a long finish, this is a highly drinkable red.
This wine is characterized by its freshness, which pairs well with mature cheeses. Its notes of ripe fruit, with something spicy, rich in acidity and light on the palate will perfectly accompany a stew, seasoned meats, as well as various types of sausage. Leaving the meat aside, Codegua Mourvèdre behaves very well with Risotto.

This light red/unusual rosé is a blend field of mostly Carginan and a bit of Mataro from the more vigorous rows in the Truquilemu vineyard. It has a savoury nose with some medicinal and balsamic undertones, wild berries, plants and flowers. The palate is explosive with focused and sharp flavours, clean, long and with an almost salty finish that makes you salivate.
This one is a great food wine! Pair it with seafood such as sea urchins or rich fish like salmon; or give it a try with some foie gras or even spicy Thai food.

Baettig is the family project of winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig (Errázuriz) and Carlos de Carlos in Traiguén, some 600 kilometers south of Chile. They planted 15.4 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on volcanic soils in 2013 and the first wines are hitting the Ontario market for the first time now.
This Selección de Parcelas was made with Pinot Noir grapes grown in Malleco, in the appellation of Traiguén. Malleco is a land of wild forests, beautiful lakes, active volcanoes and abundant rain in the southern Chilean region of La Araucanía. The ancient volcanic soils of this area are composed of pyroclastic volcanic breccia of andesite lava, with clay/loam texture. The abundant rainfall throughout the year allows Baettig to practice a dry-farming viticulture.
The Pinot Noir comes exclusively from a selection of the Traiguén and Llaima parcels, which deliver elegant and austere wines with strong ageing potential. The name Los Primos (The Cousins), refers to the closeness of style and quality of the vineyard parcels that give rise to this wine.
Pouring ruby red in the glass, this Pinot showcases refined aromas of fresh cherries and wild strawberries, with a lively bouquet of rose hip, lavender and notes of spiced orange peel and dried herbs. The palate is equally as complex, with red berry fruits supported by juicy acidity and firm but approachable tannins. Flavours of graphite unfold on the lengthy finish, owing the volcanic soils the grapes were grown in. With its deep flavours and great structure, this wine will award cellaring-if you can be patient!
Being that Pinot Noir produces such a food-friendly wines, pairing options are endless. We recommend trying this with a mushroom-stuffed pork roulade or braised beef.

This wine is a single parcel field blend made from Carignan, Garnacha and Mataro, belonging to Don Nivaldo Morales and his wife Otelia and located in Sauzal, on the Coastal Range, where the soils are way older and more complex than the Andes. As Derek says, it is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Maule who have been stewards of the vines since colonial times.
The nose is fresh and has tantalizing aromas of blueberries, violets, orange peel, raspberry leaf and aniseed with a touch of aromatic herbs that provide freshness. The palate is electric, with citric acidity, ultra-fine tannins and very good length. This is both rustic and elegant, wild and subtle. None of these wines show any alcohol or wood. This is a superb, fresh, Mediterranean blend that shows what the Maule is capable of.
Wines made from Cariñena are ideal with richer poultry dishes such as turkey or duck, roasted pork, or even a meaty beef brisket.

Vigno stands for Viñadores de Carignan and is an association of producers whose goal is to create an appellation of origin for wines made from old Carignan vines that have been dry-farmed and bush-trained in the Maule Secano area. It has spice- and mineral-accented aromas of red and blue fruit joined by slowly emerging violet and rhubarb notes. Sappy and concentrated but lithe as well, offering energetic black raspberry, spicecake and floral pastille flavours and a bracing, refreshingly bitter suggestion of blood orange that adds bite to the back half. Finishes smooth, sweet and extremely long, with resonating floral and spice notes and supple tannins adding shape and gentle grip.

The Truquilemu Vineyard is perhaps the freshest corner of The Maule secano where reds just manage to ripen. The nose is floral, elegant and subtle, a little closed at first, becoming deeper and more nuanced with time in the glass. The palate shows great freshness with a thread of fine acidity going through its backbone. It has character, with notes of earthiness and fresh violets, aromas that only the best Carignan can provide. Just great, with a long life ahead.

The grapes were harvested during the first two weeks of April, and pressed with whole cluster. The juice fermented in barrels with native yeasts, and was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels—38% in new 400L casks.
Bright yellow colour. Aromatic and highly complex with notes of pear, nougat,
acacia, apricot, honey, wax and hints of dried fruits such as walnuts, hazelnuts
and cashew. It is deep and full in mouth with a creamy texture and notes of
apple, passion fruit, honey, hay and spices. The body and density are
harmoniously balanced by the acidity, giving a deep, fresh, lively and tense wine,
with a long finish and great aging potential.

Since then, the dynamic duo have chosen to revive old vineyards in marginalized Chilean communities. They work mostly in the regions of Maule and Itata where they make highly coveted wines.
For years, Derek and Pilar watched as the small farmers with whom they grow the parcel wines were forced to accept prices fixed [illegally] by agro-giants far below their costs for working the earth. So they developed Single Ferments as a dignified means of getting more of their wonderful fruit made into wine for export.
The Single Ferment Series wines include fruit from more than one parcel or vineyard site and are co-fermented in one single tank. This wine is made with Pais from Portezuelo, and it's called '215 BC Ferment', because Pais was being cultivated in the region 215 years before Cabernet Sauvignon was documented for the first time. The wine is super fresh and clean. It is also soft, floral, slightly rustic and with a special finesse.
Perfect to pair with a light dinner and a good chat.

About the Winery
Garage Wine Co.

Garage Wine was literally started in a garage in 2001, by Etobicoke expat Derek Mossman and his wife Pilar Miranda. Since then, the dynamic duo handcraft wines from a series of individual vineyards located in the Maule and Itata Valleys, in the south of Santiago, Chile.
Garage Wine Co makes wines from a series of individual parcels, small lots / bottlings of 8-22 barrels that include a series of dry-farmed field-blends of Carignan, Garnacha, Monastrell, País, Cinsault and Cab Franc grown on pre-phylloxera rootstock with small farmers in the Maule and Itata. Each wine is from a 1-2 hectare parcel in a different place.
Over the years working in the community they have raised a veritable posse of vineyard hands whose skills are working the vineyards the old way / the traditional way– originario. The vineyards are on the old coastal range of mountains closer to the Pacific and have granitic soils with cracks for roots to get deep down into.
When GWCo. speaks of the provenance of these wines they mean more than just the geological terroir. Derek and Pilar think the farming practices that have evolved over generations have as much to do with the wines’ personalities as the soils. All the wines are made by hand with native yeasts in small tanks, punched down manually and pressed out in a small basket press. GWCo is still very much a DIY operation and we still tow much of the crop back to the winery in trailers behind trusty pickup trucks 2,000 kilos at a time.

The 2018 Bagual Vineyard Cariñena Garnacha Monastrell marked with lot #96 (in the past, this wine has been bottled with numbers 76, 66, 56 and 46) comes from the same vineyard as the pure Garnacha—only 1.1 hectares of old vines with a field blend of the three varieties (even if the Garnacha was regrafted much later). Also like the pure Garnacha, this 2018 is rounder and has better quality tannins than the 2019. This is earthy and very much marked by the Cariñena character, with good ripeness and freshness. Malolactic usually takes around seven months, and the élevage is extended over two winters in third use or older, well-seasoned and neutral barrels. This reminds me of an elegant Priorat. 4,971 bottles were filled in January 2020.

The Bagual Vineyard is located on the banks of the Perquilauquen River, planted on alluvial soils in the San Javier zone of the Maule Valley's dry-farmed secano. The soils are granitic, and that can be seen in this wine of 40% cariñena plus 40% garnacha and 20% monastrell, all grafted onto old país vines. The freshness of the fruit is powerful in this wine, and the nervy sensation from the acidity in the carignan plays a leading role here. A red to leave in its bottle for a while, but it could also be drunk now with a plate of charcuterie.
