Floral & Earthy

Baettig is the family project of winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig (Errázuriz) and Carlos de Carlos in Traiguén, some 600 kilometers south of Chile. They planted 15.4 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on volcanic soils in 2013 and the first wines are hitting the Ontario market for the first time now.

These wines come from from a combination of parcels at Viñedo Los Suizos that deliver lively and juicy wines with tremendous fruit intensity. Los Parientes (the relatives) refers to the closeness of the different components within the same vineyard.

This Vino de Viñedo "Los Parientes" was made with Pinot Noir grapes grown in Malleco, in the appellation of Traiguén. Malleco is a land of wild forests, beautiful lakes, active volcanoes and abundant rain in the southern Chilean region of La Araucanía. The ancient volcanic soils of this area are composed of pyroclastic volcanic breccia of andesite lava, with clay to loam texture. The abundant rainfall throughout the year allows Baettig to practice a dry-farming viticulture.

The grapes were harvested during the last 10 days of March, and fermented with native yeasts and a small portion of whole cluster (8%). The wine aged for 10 months in French oak barrels—10% in new 300L casks.

Vivid red-violet in colour, the nose is clean and pure, with intense aromas of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry and delicate floral notes of hibiscus and rose-hip. Polished and fine tannins surround the palate with a mineral texture. Flavours of blueberries, strawberries and black tea are also perceived. With juicy acidity and subtle spicy notes, it is a wine with silky tannins, vibrant freshness and great fruit intensity.

Lagar de Codegua Cabernet Sauvignon Alto Cachapoal 2018
$21.95 / bottle
Release Date April 30, 2022
Vintages #: 19248
750ml bottle
Full & Smooth

Alto Cachapoal is a stunning Chilean micro-terroir within the Rapel Valley located in the foothills of the Andes. The climate is Mediterranean, the soils are alluvial, and the altitude is 2,000 feet. Wines from Alto Cachapoal have intense color and aromatic concentration, a bright acidity, and restrained tannins.

At Lagar de Codegua, they only produce a limited amount of wine from a single vineyard. They believe that making wine is an art, which is represented through the drawings on the labels by famous Chilean artist Bororo. The modern winery is gravity-fed, and is surrounded by 130 acres of estate vines.

Located at the base of the Andes Mountains, the unique combination of clear skies, cool nights and gravelly soils give this Cabernet its intense color, elegant tannins and expressive fruit character.  Fresh and delicate aromas of blueberries and blackcurrants, which are mixed with savory and spicy hints of pepper, grilled nuts and cloves. On the palate it is medium bodied with remarkably velvety tannins and a long and satisfying finish.

An ideal accompaniment to well seasoned red meats such as beef and lamb with sauces made with pepper or mushrooms. It should also be considered for game meats and hot stews such as veal ragout. As for cheeses gruyère, emmental or manchego are a perfect complement for this wine.
