Juan Jesús Méndez is a proud native of Tenerife and the fourth generation of winegrowers. Driven by passion and love for his homeland, he has overseen Bodegas Viñátigo for almost thirty-five years. He has been studying and recovering the almost-extinct grape varieties that were brought to the Canary Islands by European settlers since the 15th century. He has made of Viñátigo a reference winery in the region.

1 bottle x Viñátigo Listán Blanco de Canarias 2023 White | Listán Blanco de Canarias

The grape Listán Blanco de Canarias was brought to the Canary Islands in the 18th century by the Andalusian conquers. Viñátigo cultivates it in the high-lands that sit at 500 meters of altitude.

The vines are trained in ‘parrales’, a training method inherited by the Portuguese community that settled on the northern part of the island back in the 15th century. These vertical structures adapt to the hills and ravines created by the last eruptions of Teide volcano towards the north of the island. This wine is very fresh and has a vibrant acidity. On the nose, it has fragrant aromas of fennel, dried fruits and fig tree leaves; as well as a distinct mineral quality that is a result of the volcanic soils.

1 bottle x Viñátigo Lomo de la Era 2022. White | Listán Blanco de Canarias

Lomo de la Era is an authentic expression of the winemaking tradition of northern Tenerife. The vineyards located in the Paraje de la Cruz Santa, cultivated with the traditional braided cord system, sit on young, stony volcanic soils, typical of this area. At an altitude of 500 meters above sea level and with a very direct influence of the trade winds, this wine captures the essence of its place of origin.

Pre-fermentative oxidation. Not controlled-temperature fermentation. Fermented and aged for nine months in concrete vessels. No racking. 

1 bottle x Viñátigo Pino Valois 2023. Rosé | Listán Negro

Pino Valois is a place of old vineyards in parral located in the highlands of the town of Icod de Los Vinos, northwest of the island of Tenerife. It is a unique area, traditionally known for its old vine crops on vines. Strongly influenced by the Portuguese and Galician colonizers who arrived in this area of the island in the 16th century.
Whole clusters go in the press, and sit there for 2 hours before pressing. Fermentation happens at 18/19 degrees. Aged for five months with fine lees.

1 bottle x Viñátigo Listan Negro 2023. Red | Listán Negro

Listán Negro is a grape that Viñátigo cultivates in the mid-lands, in the north-west of Tenerife. This grape is a native grape variety of the Canary Islands, as it originated from a natural crossing between the grapes Listán Blanco and Negramoll, both brought by Portuguese and Andalusian settlers between the 15th and 18th centuries.The grapes are hand-harvested by mid- September and the wine ages in old barrels for three months. It’s a delightful and juicy red, with aromas of black pepper, dark fruits, and a strong mineral, volcanic character.

1 bottle x Viñátigo Negramoll 2023. Red | Negramoll

Negramoll is Canary Island's most delicate red variety. It's thin skin and big berries yield wines that are light bodied but have very powerful aromatics. The ungrafted vines grow near the Ocean, around 300 meters above sea level. The wine is aged for six months in neutral barrels. The delicate aromas of red berry fruits are accompanied by an intriguing wisp of toffee and a powerful yet subtle volcanic minerality. A smooth and rounded palate shows polished tannins and a gentle, pleasant finish.

1 bottle x Viñátigo Pét-Nat de Listán Negro 2023. Sparkling | Listán Negro

Made with Listán Negro cultivated in the highest part of Pino Valois plot. Pino Valois is a vineyard located in the highlands of Icod de los Vinos, in the northwest of Tenerife. The volcanic soils in this area are the youngest soils in Tenerife, which have resulted from the last eruption of Teide and other satellite volcanoes during the last 2,000 years. The base wine for this pét nat is the Pino Valois rosé. At the end of the fermentation, 1,000 liters are bottled and left aside for a year, with the top of the bottles pointing down.
