Established in 2001 by Jacques Montagné, Clos del Rey is a family winery located in the heart of the Maury appellation, in the Roussillon region. The 12 hectares where they tend their vines are in the heart of a protected natural area of garrigues, a type of low scrubland in the Mediterranean forests, where rosemary, thyme and cistus flowers abound. The vines are on average 40 years old but the farm has one hectare of Carignan whose vines are more than a century old.

A Nicholas Pearce Wines' Portfolio staple. Launched in 2010, this now iconic wine from Clos del Rey is a beautiful representation of a balanced blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah and Carignan.

The vines of Grenache and Carignan have been planted for more than 50 years on deep shale soils. The Syrah comes from mixed soils of shale marl and limestone.

Deep ruby red color. The nose is superb, intense, presenting aromas of red and black fruits, notes of garrigue and spices in a very Mediterranean style. The palate is rich, full and juicy. Tannins are silky, round, with a fruity finish of good length.

1 bottle x Clos del Rey Chiraz Côtes Catalanes IGP 2022
Red | Syrah

Chiraz is made with old vines of Syrah planted in L'Episcata vineyard, where soils are a complex mix of black slate marl and limestone. The naming of this wine is an hommage to the city of Shiraz in Iran, a city with a 7,000-year-old history of wine growing.

Superb deep purple color. Complex nose, with a typical Mediterranean character. The wine evolves in the mouth with a fleshy and opulent flesh then in the finish, despite a natural generosity, it presents itself in a straighter style with beautiful bitterness and great freshness giving it allure.

About the Winery

Clos del Rey

In the foothills of the Pyrénées Mountains, not far from the Mediterranean sea, Clos del Rey is situated in the high altitude hills over the tiny village of Maury. The estate has been owned and farmed by the Montagne family for generations. The vineyard itself is nestled among a protected area of garrigues (rosemary and thyme). The vines of up to 120 years old are allowed to grow natural and untrained, in the old-fashioned way, known as the goblet or bush style. However, it is what lies beneath the vineyard that lends much of the character and complexity found in their wines. Julien Montagne makes complex wines that truly represent his vineyards and his Catalan roots--you can almost smell the sun in the glass.
