About the Winery
Domaine Baud Père et Fils

The estate history dates back to 1742, but it wasn't until 1950 when René Baud, the 7th generation, rebuilt the vineyard which had suffered from the phylloxera crisis and two World Wars.
Starting with only 4 hectares, the vineyard progressively expanded to 20 hectares with the help of successive generations. Now, managed by siblings Clémentine and Bastien, the 9th generation, the estate continues to flourish and grow, with a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture and preserving the traditions and style that makes the wines of the Jura so unique and incredible.

This is a very tasty, rich, golden hued, well aged chardonnay-based sparkler with an involved nose of cashew, baked apple, nougat and honey. It is almost creamy in texture with fine mousse and very good acidity providing counterpoint. There is pleasant nutty bitterness on the finish; length is excellent.
91 Points - Michael Godel
Baud’s Crémant is made in true Blanc de Blancs style, from 100 per cent chardonnay and though faintly if beautifully oxidative, the cuvée pulses with great energy. The scents of fraying ginger batons, scraped orange skin and baking almond cookies are all a treat for the olfactory. Just enough but not too much sweetness fleshes the the body to get down to density in mouthfeel but never abandons its airy character. A terrific Champagne alternative that was disgorged in October of 2017. Drink 2018-2022. Tasted April 2018.

This family estate dates back to 1742, but it wasn't until 1950 when René Baud, 7th generation, rebuilt the vineyards, expanding from 4 hectares into 20 hectares over the years. Today the estate is managed by siblings Clémentine and Bastien, 9th generation. This sustainably farmed chardonnay is rooted in the Jura's marl and limestone soils and was fermented in stainless before a year on lees before disgorgement and release. Green apple, white florals, oyster shells, meadow herbs, meringue run the bright, sleek palate, with a bed of creamy lees. There's a lovely streaming anise note that leads to a lengthy finish. Drinking beautifully now, but will hold over the next couple years easy.

One of Ontario’s best selling Western Cape chenin blanc’s is this perennial stalwart from local négoce heroes Will Prehomme and Nicholas Pearce. Together with Alex Dale and Jacques de Klerk at Radford Dale they blend and mix parcels, tanks and barrels of chenin to concoct this imminently drinkable blanc. This is the aromatic one but also to date the most amenable of them all. The energy in acids are lowered while the drinkability factor raises the bar. Accessible to all now, even if that had previously not been the case. Drink 2020-2023. Tasted May 2020.
90 points - John Szabo, MS
2019 is a stellar vintage for the Pearce-Predhomme old vine chenin made by Radford Dale, always a terrific value and even more so here. There's an uncommon freshness and liveliness for South Africa/Stellenbosch, with fruit spanning the white-fleshed and citrus spectrum, and acids that drive additional sips. But neither is it just simple white wine; there's genuine depth and concentration on offer. Complexity should build with a year or two in the cellar, though it's hard to resist now to be sure. Top notch value. Tasted May 2020.

Premiere Cuvee is from the Hyland Vineyard in the McMinnville AVA and as such volcanics, single-vineyard focus and hillside angles play a significant role in the result. Nicholas Pearce and Will Predhomme have been at this negoce thing for more than half a decade now so acumen meeting relationships are growing into their own. The wine is made at the Northwest Wine Company by Laurent Montalieu and this particular pinot noir continues the cured thread of charcuterie knowing and laying with dark fruit. There is this persistent feral feel but also the smooth and glycerin constitution of a wine in seamless construct. Firm and gelid, basaltic and in total control. Just a touch of heat in 2017. Drink 2020-2025. Tasted July 2020.
90 points - John Szabo, MS
A pinot on the appealingly savoury side of the spectrum, with earthy, leafy but not green character, juicy acids, fine-grained tannins, very good length. Totally correct, compelling, lightly saline. Tasted July 2020.

Taste and drops of the moon, a fanciful moniker and a delightful AOCChardonnay at exactly the correct weight and depth you expect and demand. Zuani

Zuani winery is located in the heart of Collio, Friuli, a hidden appellation between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. Coming from a long tradition of winemakers in Croatia that goes back to the 19th century, Patrizia Felluga saw her dream come true when she acquired the estate and the vineyards in 2001. Today, her son and daughter have taken over the winery; producing exclusively white wines. Everything hinges on one exceptionally well exposed “cru”, or vineyard, on a gentle hillside where about eleven acres of vines and gardens surround the Zuani cellar.
The varietals planted are Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon, a carefully chosen range that produced the first vintage of Zuani Collio Bianco. The Zuani winery embodies the Felluga family winemaking heritage and expresses the fundamental unity of the traditional aspects of Friulian varieties with their more modern side.

Ribolla is a rarely seen indigenous variety of northeast Italy. It is a mild, pristine and very well balanced white - enigmatic and curious. It has semi-aromatic nose of apricot/melon fruit, almond, vague florality and green tea. It is medium bodied, precisely balanced and fresh, yet somewhat mineral as well. The length is excellent. Tasted December 2020

Lovely, characterful Ribolla here, very smoky-stony-sulfide-driven in the best way, with plenty of citrus fruit and peel, grapefruit and fresh, sweet herbs. Length and depth are excellent in the price category. Tasted December 2020.

Lovely aromas of white spring flowers mingle with pear and a whiff of freshly baked bread. Racy and elegant, the savory palate offers ripe apple, white peach and citrusy notes alongside vibrant acidity. It has a crisp, pristine close.

Château du Moulin Noir

This beautiful right-bank Bordeaux estate consistently produces high-value, elegant and classic Merlot dominant wines and is considered one of the most famous Château of this appellation. Located in Montagne-Saint-Emilion, Château Moulin Noir consists of seven hectares of vineyards on clay and limestone soils.
This château owes its name to a family feuddating back to the Middle Ages. Two brothers were arguing about their father’s legacy with the youngest brother being incredibly jealous that everything went to the elder. He was so jealous that he burnt the château to the ground - Moulin Noir translates to “blackened Mill”.

This notably complex right bank blend from a satellite appellation of Saint-Emilion offers appealing savory notes along with a mineral, iron component as well as licorice spice. The oak treatment is wonderfully integrated with wood spice elevating the bright red fruit. Harmoniously matured, graceful and very elegant. The staying power of the finish is impressive. Drinking very well now. Tasted January 2019.

The latest in wine merchant Nicholas Pearce's negoce project (that counts 10 wines in three countries I believe) is this Columbia Valley cabernet sauvignon. Rue Naujac is the street Pearce lived on while studying and working in France and Bordeaux is the country's 33rd department. The reference "33" is slang for Bordeaux, a wink-wink, nudge-nudge laugh for those who know him. A blend of two different vineyards, one in Wahluke Slope AVA & the other in Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Deep, dark, unctuous, flowing with Cassis and no shortage of graphite notes neither. Good spirit and quite correct, better and more honest than most at the west coast price. Drink 2020-2024. Tasted July 2020.

This is a quite tasty and delicious cabernet if veering into sweet territory. It is quite full bodied, smooth and dense, and balanced in that sense. The nose is very ripe with blackcurrant jam, spice and generous oak spice. It is full bodied, with some cabernet earthiness and dried herbs. Very good to excellent length. Tasted August 2020.

A creation of Ontario importer Nicholas Pearce in partnership with a French winemaker with 30 years experience in Washington, Rue Naujac is the street Pearce lived on while studying/working in France, and Bordeaux is the country's 33rd department, both of which gave the inspiration for the name and lot # of this wine. It's made of pure Cabernet Sauvignon, 64% of which is from the coveted Wahluke Slope AVA, and 36% Horse Heaven Hills AVA, with 15% new oak used for maturation. It's crafted in a typically forward, plush and dark fruit flavoured Washington style, immediately engaging and appealing, with a vague sensation of sweetness on the palate to broaden appeal. Tannins are thick and velvety, while mocha-chocolate flavours fold into the fruit. Both sophisticated and approachable, a winning style all around, well priced. Tasted July 2020.

Ca' del Monte

Ca del Monte is situated on the hillsides overlooking the village of Negrar, in the heart of Valpolicella. It has belonged to the same family for generations, and is now run by brothers Umberto and Giuseppe Zaconte. There’s nothing fancy about this place. The house and winery are modest - and are attached to a 17th century monastery.
The estate is approximately 50 acres, and its 15-65 year old vines lie on gentle slopes at 800-900 meters. They grow on four soils including clay, limestone, red volcanic soil with red stones, and “Toar,” a green volcanic soil. The vineyards of Ca Del Monte are planted with 20-40 year old vines of Corvina, Rodinella and Molinara grapes that are planted in poor soils that stress the vines and nurture the fruit. All of the farming is done traditionally and non-certified organic.
