About the Winery
Matthias Hager

The Hager Matthias winery is located in the small village of Mollands in the Kamptal area of Lower Austria. Matthias took over the 12-hectare land and the family business at an early age. He aims to produce the best quality wine possible and to focus on being in balance with nature. The lands are cultivated according to biodynamic principles and are certified Demeter. Matthias has a vast knowledge about plants and insects, and about keeping the flora and fauna in harmony with the vines. Matthias Hager is one of the most experimental winemakers in the Kamptal region, Austria. He understood early how to work with different soil types from loess to clay. He established different product lines to highlight these differences: the blue one representing fresh, lively wines including Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc; and the brown line gravitating towards more earthy, flavourful produce and the red line stands for no sulphites!

About the Winery
Abbia Nòva

Located in the town of Pilio, about thirty miles east of Rome, Abbia Nova is the project of cousins Daniele and Pierluca Proietti. They farm 7 hectares of vines, mostly inherited from Daniele’s father, with many of the vines being indigenous varietals to the area. Some of these vines are at least eighty years old. The cousins follow a combination of natural and traditional methods both in the vineyards and in the cellar, starting with organic and then moving to biodynamic principles. They avoid treatments like sulphur and copper and instead use natural resistance methods that they produce themselves.

100% Passerina from a 50-year-old vineyard at 550 m above sea level. Plant density is 3,000 vines/ha. Biodynamically and homeopathically tended. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and aged on the fine lees until the following spring. Aged for two months in 54-litre glass demijohns. Total production 7,000 bottles. The technical sheet says: 'Simple but not common, like when you have a curcka moment at the mchanic's or at the laundromat. Flashes that emit light.'
Pale coppery yellow. The modest Passerina, around for 500 years in the are, showing it has more strings to its bow. Savoury, saline, apricot, bruised apple, orange blossom, iron and lees note. Hint of dry vermouth. Opens up on ht epalate with notes of sweet apricot and peach and savoury salty notes on the finish. Gorgeous lightness and loads of character, but nothing for purists, I suspect. Drink 2020 - 2022.

Cantine Barbera

Cantina Barbera is located in the Menfi Coast, on the west coast of Sicily. The vineyards are about one mile from the Mediterranean Sea: an uncontaminated deep blue sea, facing South, where low cliffs and sandy dunes create a beautiful environment protected by the Belice River Natural Reservation Fund.
A third generation farmer, Marilena Barbera farms the Inzolia that her grandfather planted in the 20's, just as she attends to the native varietals that are the new frontier of her own generation: Perricone, Nerello, Alicante, Nero d'Avola and Grillo. Marilena makes her wines praticticing organic farming and natural winemaking, while paying utmost respect to Menfi's terroir.
"At the winery, I chose to work only with spontaneous fermentations and to adopt non invasive winemaking practices, in order to respect the unique personality of Sicilian native grape varieties and the beautiful land to which they belong."

Azienda Agricola Tessari

The Tessari family have Soave in their blood. For three generations they have been extracting delectable wine from the well cared for vines of their Monteforte d’Alpone vineyards. With only a little over a hectare of Garganega grapes in the prestigious volcanic solis of Soave Classico, Antonio Tessari hand dug his cellar back in 1933 and started the legacy that continues today with his grandchildren: Germano, Antonio and Cornelia.
From vineyard to bottle, these three siblings oversee it all; with unwavering respect for tradition, quality and passion for the art of winemaking. The volcanic soils of the hillside are rich with basaltic rocks and clays, which guarantees the health of the plant and the promotes the mineral and floral aromas that are characteristic of the Garganega grape. Truly artisanal wine making at it’s best.

It began with Antonio, then on to Bianca and Aldo before the current generation of Cornelia, Antonio and Germano took over this singular Soave project. Grisela may clock in south of $20 but it is in fact a single-vineyard garganega off of near 45 year-old vines in the area of Brognoligo di Monteforte. An obviously easy, peachy, amenable and gift of a harvest Soave that followed a smooth sailing season with fruit, minerals, elements and a liquidity of structure that just keeps on giving. Pierres Sèches means "dry stones" alluding to the stone wall terraces surrounding the vines in the terroir of Rouffach. Organic, 35 year-old vines and from well-draining, limestone and marl soils, helped by those dry stone walls. Actually quite unctuous pinot gris in the classic Alsace style in which some residual sugar is urged on by acidity with purposed equanimity. Begins in flinty smoulder, works through some terpenes, stone fruit and emerges into a world of candied lemon and pith. You can feel the barrel in that mild bitterness and in the creamy texture. A fulfilling wine with classicism coded in its DNA. Will transform into creme brule floating in a mineral salts bath. Drink 2021-2028. Tasted July 2020.
92 points - Sara d'Amato
An expressive and generously perfumed pinot gris. Taught but also mouth-filling with impressive viscosity in part due to a well-balanced degree of residual sugar. The acidity makes the wine feels svelt when it actually has lovely curves. Dynamic on the palate. Oily, mineral, fresh and lush all at once - the juxtapositions are delicious. Organically produced. Tasted September 2020.
91 points - David Lawrason
The hot vintage has created a very ripe, deeply coloured style of pinot gris with almost raisined fruit, orange/apricot fruit, almond and linden florality and perfume. It is medium-full bodied, fairly firm and in the end dry. The length is very good with an orange pekoe tea finish. The length is excellent.
91 points - John Szabo
In the open and loose, oxidative Mure house style, this is a ripe and fleshy, slightly off-dry pinot gris with fine balance provided by both acids and a pleasant touch of varietal bitterness, not to mention a pinch of salt on the finish that encourages additional sips. Length and depth are excellent. Lots of character on offer, and a perfect foil for that gently spicy south Asian cuisine with its own measure of fat and sweetness. Tasted September 2020.

Pure and bold notes of freshly cut russet-pear peel fill the nose on this wine. The palate adds flowing pear juiciness and concentration. Bold fruitiness is held in check by pithy, not quite zesty freshness. This wine has drive and energy, with a just off-dry finish.

Oily, mineral and offering great intensity - an unusually characterful sylvaner that should be a hit with Alsatian wine fanatics. Transparent, dry, vinous and notable complex. Sylvaner is not the showiest of varieties in Alsace but it has an almost riesling-like acid grip that makes it a very food friendly choice. This shows generous lychee, vaguely garlicked and perfumed saffron aromas. Intriguing. It is medium bodied, fairly firm and dry with a lemony and nutty finish. The length is excellent.

Very pale, crystal-clear straw-green. Delicate aromas and flavors of quince, green apple and minerals. Finishes long and clean with refined perfume. The name Originel refers to “in the beginning” because in the 1960s and 1970s, Sylvaner was the donminant grape variety in the valley (the Zinnkoepflé Grand Cru, for example, was almost entirely planted to Sylvaner and Gewürz). Lovely, above-average aperitif wine here; or try it with shellfish and asparagus dishes.

Domaine Viret

In a magical place steeped in history, Saint-Maurice, in the Rhone Valley. Advocates of the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture, the Viret family has chosen to employ a particular form of natural viticulture throughout their estate. Known as “cosmoculture®”, this is based on cosmotelluric exchanges. Everything is organised in such a way that both vines and wines are able draw on their own natural defences.
Work in the vineyards focuses on reorganising the magnetic field and on the application of homeopathic and naturals preparations made from rocks and plants that are often found in the vineyards. Alain, Philippe's father, built the winery on an ancient Roman site around an underground spring which they believe energises the vineyards and the winery.

Zuani winery is located in the heart of Collio, Friuli, a hidden appellation between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. Coming from a long tradition of winemakers in Croatia that goes back to the 19th century, Patrizia Felluga saw her dream come true when she acquired the estate and the vineyards in 2001. Today, her son and daughter have taken over the winery; producing exclusively white wines. Everything hinges on one exceptionally well exposed “cru”, or vineyard, on a gentle hillside where about eleven acres of vines and gardens surround the Zuani cellar.
The varietals planted are Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon, a carefully chosen range that produced the first vintage of Zuani Collio Bianco. The Zuani winery embodies the Felluga family winemaking heritage and expresses the fundamental unity of the traditional aspects of Friulian varieties with their more modern side.

The family farms in the Collio DOC of Friuli Venezia Giulia where the hills of Giasbana encroach upon Slovenia in the far northeastern corner of Italy. While ribolla gialla, friulano, malvasia and sauvignon may dominate the white wine scene it is pinot grigio that is on the rise. Not a ubiquitous one but part of a focused, terroir-driven community. Zuani’s Sodevo is more Collio than pinot grigio but that being said it is so peach fleshy, unctuously arriving with mouthfeel, next level fruit sweetness and extra-über grigio texture. Surely apposite to the oft amazing collection of golden-hued, skin-contact, highly herbal and mineral-laden whites of Collio. This one is something other, so clean and fresh. Drink 2020-2023. A pinot grigio of above average flavour intensity and richness, this is clearly quality wine from low yielding vines. There's an uncommon richness and roundness, leaning more towards the prototypical Alsatian 'gris' style, yet with Italian flair and verve. Domaine Frédéric Brouca

Frédéric grew up in Normandy and met his Canadian wife Elaine at university in Lille, Northern France. They live a nomadic lifestyle (Canada, India, Singapore and USA) though Frédéric spends about half of his time in Faugères. Since early age, Frédéric had a calling for farming and the fierce desire to become a winegrower. After completing a Masters Degree in Finance in 2001, Frédéric went back to college for a Sommelier diploma and started his career as a Burgundy wine broker.
In late 2012, Frédéric and Elaine were fortunate to take over 25 acres of old vines in Faugères, organically farmed for twenty years and deeply rooted in schist soils.
2013 was the inaugural vintage for Domaine Frédéric Brouca. In his modest winery in the village of Laurens, Frédéric is creating a new vision for Faugères wines; fresh, vibrant and made without artifice. Nothing revolutionary, simply returning to our grandparent's ideology of farming and winemaking to craft 'Vins Vivants'. The Faugères Appellation is in the heart of Languedoc in the Hérault department. Here, winemaking dates back to the Greek times and was developed during the Roman Era. It wasn't until the early 1900's, however, that the wines became more widely known for its unique schist soils and moderate Mediterranean climate. These villages are heavily reliant on wine as an important part of their culture and economy.
The area is stunning with mountain views and close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea (20 miles / 30 kms). Faugères has a long history of responsible farming. It boasts the highest percentage of organic vineyards for any AOC in all of France with almost 50% of farmers making the choice.

Stéphane Aviron

Stéphane Aviron can be considered a pioneer in his approach to winemaking in Beaujolais, however he would just tell you that he’s simply returning to the traditional practices that have always made fantastic Gamay wines. Sustainable viticulture, extremely old vines and classic Burgundian techniques. He focuses on the Beaujolais village crus, all but forgotten gems of vineyards when the nouveau craze took over, which are the best sites for unique, expressive and terroir driven wines. All of the fruit is sourced from old vines (40+ years), so seeing Vieilles Vignes on the label is a rite of passage, not a privilege. Authenticity and a distinctly Beaujolais style of winemaking is what sets Stéphane apart from the rest.

About the Winery

91 points - Michael Godel
Taken from San Sebastiano area, vines 15-20 years old in Monforte d’Alba. “We have a special view of the nebbiolo," tells Daniele Gaia. "In our point of view it has to show the character of the grape, flowers, drinkability and approachable, not a baby Barolo." And so Réva attacks with a gentle touch, a short and cold maceration to secure nebbiolo kept in a “light” vein, with evident acidity. Carries the youthful "splendore" of beautiful red fruit. A precociousness unhindered, on hinges, in ultra comfortable balance. Drink 2020-2024. Tasted January 2020.
