Casa Los Frailes

Casa Los Frailes is located in the valley called “land of Alforins”, south west inland province of Valencia, with average altitude of 650-700 meters above sea level. The valley is located between two mountains range, on the east the Mediterranean Sea (50km) and on the west the main “plateau” of La Mancha. Casa Los Frailes (“Cals Frares” in old valencian local language) takes their name from the Jesuit Friars that used to live in the Estate over two centuries (XVII to XVIII). The Casa Los Frailes estate now belongs to the Velázquez family and has for over 250 years, today the 13th generation runs the winery.
Frontrunners in organic agriculture and biodynamics, the estate consists of 162 hectare with vineyards, Mediterranean forest, almond and olive trees and a unique terroir. The main variety was (and still is) the Monastrell, cultivated in bush vines. "As inheritors of such legacy, we believe our wines should be part and transmit the history of our estate, as this history is obviously unique. In today's interconnected world, wines are more and more uniform, but we are committed to elaborate authentic and different wines, loyal to our personality and our history."

2019 vintage: This is a deeply coloured blend, with a lifted, strident nose of blueberry, cassis, rosemary and some meaty character. It is notably green and almost sappy on the palate. Quite full bodied, fairly rich yet the acidity is high, as is the alcohol (14%). Tannins are well integrated and firm. The length is excellent. Very distinctive and well done. Tasted October 2019

Stéphane Aviron

Stéphane Aviron can be considered a pioneer in his approach to winemaking in Beaujolais, however he would just tell you that he’s simply returning to the traditional practices that have always made fantastic Gamay wines. Sustainable viticulture, extremely old vines and classic Burgundian techniques. He focuses on the Beaujolais village crus, all but forgotten gems of vineyards when the nouveau craze took over, which are the best sites for unique, expressive and terroir driven wines. All of the fruit is sourced from old vines (40+ years), so seeing Vieilles Vignes on the label is a rite of passage, not a privilege. Authenticity and a distinctly Beaujolais style of winemaking is what sets Stéphane apart from the rest.

This is a delicious, fairly juicy and charming young gamay. There is a hint of meatiness on the nose but all kinds of candied strawberry/cherry as well, and violet-like florals. It is light to medium bodied, open knit, slightly sour-edged with very generous fruit on the palate. The tannins are notably mild, the alcohol provides some power and the length is very good to excellent. Tasted June 2022

Matthias Hager

The Hager Matthias winery is located in the small village of Mollands in the Kamptal area of Lower Austria. Matthias took over the 12-hectare land and the family business at an early age. He aims to produce the best quality wine possible and to focus on being in balance with nature. The lands are cultivated according to biodynamic principles and are certified Demeter. Matthias has a vast knowledge about plants and insects, and about keeping the flora and fauna in harmony with the vines. Matthias Hager is one of the most experimental winemakers in the Kamptal region, Austria. He understood early how to work with different soil types from loess to clay. He established different product lines to highlight these differences: the blue one representing fresh, lively wines including Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc; and the brown line gravitating towards more earthy, flavourful produce and the red line stands for no sulphites!

Review from 2019 vintage:
From one of the globe’s biodynamic gurus, non-dogmatic, he farms like we breath. Really sharp and equally earthy grüner of reaction, action and depth. Citrus is variegated and texture is for real. Really, really long. Great intensity forever here. Drink 2019-2025. Tasted November 2019.

About the Winery
Markus Altenburger
The Altenburger family has farmed land in and around Jois since the 16th century. Their vineyards are only half an hour from Vienna, but seemingly in another cosmos altogether.
Markus is fascinated by Blaufränkisch – the red grape of Burgenland. He works with massal selections from his Gritschenberg vineyard's old vines. There, loose clusters and small berries are well adapted to the dry Pannonian summers. The grapes express the schist for fruiter wines charming in their youth, as well as the limestone, for length and structure. The wines express this tension, the influences of limestone and schist soils, and something of the wild abundance of nature, as well.
Since Markus took over his family’s estate more than a decade ago, he’s moved from what he calls “well-behaved wines” to those that are much closer to nature and bear a far more personal stamp. In the cellar, he favours native yeasts, minimal added sulphur, long, protective lees contact, and concrete and neutral wood for ageing.

An aromatically engaging blaufränkish brimming with botanicals, mineral and ripe red fruit. Pepper, graphite and refreshing acidity liven the palate. Elegant but spirited with great depth of flavour and an appealing crunchiness. Youthful yet ready to drink with a memorably salty finish. Best now to 2026. Tasted August 2023.
91 points - Michael Godel
Biodynamically farmed blaufränkisch and from the Altenburger who have been present in this land so near to Vienna since the 16th century. The soils are calcareous loam and the wine may be natural though it is anything but sweetly, peaty or sweaty funky. The vintage has surely determined great ripeness and the sour-edgy acidity is in total command. This may just be a quintessential Austrian food wine with a cool Leithaberg breeze that looks for warm broth, soft dumplings and preferably braised meat. Will age for a few years without turning. Drink 2023-2026. Tasted August 2023.

This is a fairly deeply coloured and ripe blaufrankisch that shows a rich nose of raspberry/plum with well integrated violet and spice. Very appealing aromas if not intense. It is medium weight with lively, almost juicy acidity, some alcohol warmth (12.5%) and fine but gritty tannin. The length is excellent. I would age it a couple of years although I like its exuberance now as well. Tasted Sept 2023

Finca Casa Balaguer
Andres Carull's family has been making wine in Alicante for decades. At a very young age, Andres already knew what he was going to dedicate himself too. However, a visit to Bordeaux in 2008 introduced him to natural wine; turning his winemaking passion towards this ‘old-but-new’ path. The seed planted in Bordeaux in 2008 has has now blossomed into a personal project dedicated to producing stripped-back, honest wines that truthfully express his countryside, heritage and people.
Vibrant wines from living vines. Andres works exclusively with local grape varieties such as Montastrell, Garnacha, Garnacha peluda,
Rojal, Tortosina, Moscatel and Malvasía using nothing but fermented grape juice.
He farms the 20 hectares organically and biodynamically. Half of vineyards surround the town of Villena at over 600 meters above sea level and the other half are located in La Mata Natural Park right on the Mediterranean coast. Unfiltered, unfined, no sulphur added.

Domaine Muré

The Muré family has been winegrowers in the region of Rouffach since 1650. In 1935, Alfred Muré, René’s grandfather, bought 32 acres of family-monopole vineyard name Clos St. Landelin, an area that has been described as the best of Alsace Grand Cru since the 7th Century.
Today, René Muré, the 11th generation of the family, along with his children, Véronique and Thomas, are responsible for running their exceptional Grand Cru vineyard and neighbouring terroirs using biodynamic methods. Until this day, they persist in hand-picking every single grape, and focus on crafting wines that preserve the family’s credo. The resulting wines are some of Alsace's finest – powerful, elegant, and age-worthy.

If 2017 was found to exist in the ripe and rich realm for Alsatian sylvaner then wait to you get a taste of what 2018 brings to the varietal table. Also crunchy and finely embittered with a sense of lemons having spent time soaking up neutral spirits. Not your old uncle Sylvain’s sylvaner, no sir, this one’s set up to host the new millennials. An alternative varietal take that will rock the avocado off your toast. Drink 2020-2024. Tasted October 2020.

This is a ripe version of sylvaner from a warmer year, with peach fruit, some waxy/oiliness and light caraway and spice. It is medium-full bodied, nicely rich yet firm and dry, with some sense of spritz. There is some pithy bitterness on the finish. The length is very good to excellent. Tasted October 2020
90 points - John Szabo, MS
Clearly ripe, full of fleshy white-fleshed apple fruit and spiced apple chutney, with a vaguely sweet taste, concentrated and generous to be sure. I like the density of flavour and evident intensity, while acids remain firm but ripe and length and depth are excellent. A superior example to be sure, more generous than the mean. Ready to enjoy or hold short term. Tasted October 2020.
90 points - Sara d'Amato
There is a notable elegance to this fresh but fulfilling sylvaner a characteristic tendency of this French/Germanic grape variety. Apple and pear with more apparent sweetness than the previous vintage due to level of ripeness. Highly drinkable, very well defined and a real classic. Tasted October 2020.

Abbia Nòva

Located in the town of Pilio, about thirty miles east of Rome, Abbia Nova is the project of cousins Daniele and Pierluca Proietti. They farm 7 hectares of vines, mostly inherited from Daniele’s father, with many of the vines being indigenous varietals to the area. Some of these vines are at least eighty years old.
The cousins follow a combination of natural and traditional methods both in the vineyards and in the cellar, starting with organic and then moving to biodynamic principles. They avoid treatments like sulphur and copper and instead use natural resistance methods that they produce themselves. Their wines are vegan-friendly and organic certified from vintage 2020 on.

100% Passerina from a 50-year-old vineyard at 550 m above sea level. Plant density is 3,000 vines/ha. Biodynamically and homeopathically tended. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and aged on the fine lees until the following spring. Aged for two months in 54-litre glass demijohns. Total production 7,000 bottles. The technical sheet says: 'Simple but not common, like when you have a curcka moment at the mchanic's or at the laundromat. Flashes that emit light.'
Pale coppery yellow. The modest Passerina, around for 500 years in the are, showing it has more strings to its bow. Savoury, saline, apricot, bruised apple, orange blossom, iron and lees note. Hint of dry vermouth. Opens up on ht epalate with notes of sweet apricot and peach and savoury salty notes on the finish. Gorgeous lightness and loads of character, but nothing for purists, I suspect. Drink 2020 - 2022.

Made from grüner veltliner, low alcohol, dry and about as transparently crystalline as it gets for Pét-Nat styled sparkling wine. This a factor of spontaneous fermentation with only natural yeasts hanging out or rather laying low in the bottle to keep things lively and fresh. Does not get much cleaner or pick me up revitalizing in the category and so the price may be steep but the quality and satisfaction run high. Drink 2023-2025. Tasted August 2023.

Domaine du Coulet - Matthieu Barret

Matthieu Barret was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975 and studied viticulture in Beaune.
He is the 7th generation vigneron and joined his grandfather in Cornas in 1997. Previously, his family had only been farming and selling grapes. He practices biodynamic viticulture, obtaining very low yields (23 hl/ha) and extraordinary quality. He describes his wines as being 100% grape, with a very low sulphite addition. His wines are extremely clean, and, true to the Cornas character. Domaine du Coulet was founded by Matthieu Barret’s grandfather after WWII, and over the years has supplied grapes to some of the best known producers in the Northern Rhône, including Chapoutier and Delas. While his father eschewed the agrarian lifestyle, opting instead for a career in international business, Matthieu knew early on that he wanted to be a vigneron. In 1998 at the age of only 23, he took over the family’s 25 acres of well-situated vines on the terraced hillsides of Cornas.
From the beginning, Matthieu has employed natural, organic practices and by 2002 (his second year of production) the domaine received its biodynamic certification. With each vintage, Matthieu has gained a better understanding of his vine parcels and through thoughtful experimentation, he now turns out a remarkable selection of Cornas wines that express the unique nuances of each micro-terroir. No new oak, no racking, minimal use of sulfur and no fining or filtration. Pure, sexy Syrah.
