100% Passerina from a 50-year-old vineyard at 550 m above sea level. Plant density is 3,000 vines/ha. Biodynamically and homeopathically tended. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and aged on the fine lees until the following spring. Aged for two months in 54-litre glass demijohns. Total production 7,000 bottles. The technical sheet says: 'Simple but not common, like when you have a curcka moment at the mchanic's or at the laundromat. Flashes that emit light.'
Pale coppery yellow. The modest Passerina, around for 500 years in the are, showing it has more strings to its bow. Savoury, saline, apricot, bruised apple, orange blossom, iron and lees note. Hint of dry vermouth. Opens up on ht epalate with notes of sweet apricot and peach and savoury salty notes on the finish. Gorgeous lightness and loads of character, but nothing for purists, I suspect. Drink 2020 - 2022.

Cantine Barbera

Cantina Barbera is located in the Menfi Coast, on the west coast of Sicily. The vineyards are about one mile from the Mediterranean Sea: an uncontaminated deep blue sea, facing South, where low cliffs and sandy dunes create a beautiful environment protected by the Belice River Natural Reservation Fund.
A third generation farmer, Marilena Barbera farms the Inzolia that her grandfather planted in the 20's, just as she attends to the native varietals that are the new frontier of her own generation: Perricone, Nerello, Alicante, Nero d'Avola and Grillo. Marilena makes her wines praticticing organic farming and natural winemaking, while paying utmost respect to Menfi's terroir.

Fattoria Nannì

Fattoria Nannì is an organic estate in Apiro in Macerata province in Le Marche, a region on the Adriatic coast of Italy. The estate was founded by Roberto Cantori in 2016. He makes white wines under the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC. This is one of the most southerly estates in the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi denomination. Ripe, honeyed, floral, this is a fine and characterful verdicchio, lively and fresh, with no oak and minimal lees influence - this is crafted in a straight and steely style for maximum gastronomic enjoyment. Acids are crunchy, and the finish lingers on lemon blossom notes - springtime in a glass. Drink or hold short term. Tasted December 2020.

Azienda Agricola Tessari

The Tessari family have Soave in their blood. For three generations they have been extracting delectable wine from the well cared for vines of their Monteforte d’Alpone vineyards. With only a little over a hectare of Garganega grapes in the prestigious volcanic solis of Soave Classico, Antonio Tessari hand dug his cellar back in 1933 and started the legacy that continues today with his grandchildren: Germano, Antonio and Cornelia.
From vineyard to bottle, these three siblings oversee it all; with unwavering respect for tradition, quality and passion for the art of winemaking. The volcanic soils of the hillside are rich with basaltic rocks and clays, which guarantees the health of the plant and the promotes the mineral and floral aromas that are characteristic of the Garganega grape. Truly artisanal wine making at it’s best.

It began with Antonio, then on to Bianca and Aldo before the current generation of Cornelia, Antonio and Germano took over this singular Soave project. Grisela may clock in south of $20 but it is in fact a single-vineyard garganega off of near 45 year-old vines in the area of Brognoligo di Monteforte. An obviously easy, peachy, amenable and gift of a harvest Soave that followed a smooth sailing season with fruit, minerals, elements and a liquidity of structure that just keeps on giving. This is winemaking as an extension of farming in the finest sense of education and learning 101. Drink 2020-2024. Tasted December 2020.

Zuani

Zuani winery is located in the heart of Collio, Friuli, a hidden appellation between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. Coming from a long tradition of winemakers in Croatia that goes back to the 19th century, Patrizia Felluga saw her dream come true when she acquired the estate and the vineyards in 2001. Today, her son and daughter have taken over the winery; producing exclusively white wines. Everything hinges on one exceptionally well exposed “cru”, or vineyard, on a gentle hillside where about eleven acres of vines and gardens surround the Zuani cellar.
The varietals planted are Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon, a carefully chosen range that produced the first vintage of Zuani Collio Bianco. The Zuani winery embodies the Felluga family winemaking heritage and expresses the fundamental unity of the traditional aspects of Friulian varieties with their more modern side.

Ribolla is a rarely seen indigenous variety of northeast Italy. It is a mild, pristine and very well balanced white - enigmatic and curious. It has semi-aromatic nose of apricot/melon fruit, almond, vague florality and green tea. It is medium bodied, precisely balanced and fresh, yet somewhat mineral as well. The length is excellent. Lovely, characterful Ribolla here, very smoky-stony-sulfide-driven in the best way, with plenty of citrus fruit and peel, grapefruit and fresh, sweet herbs. Length and depth are excellent in the price category. Tasted December 2020.

Here's a solid, mid-weight pinot grigio with better structure and depth than the expected. It seems to be a bit riper with classic peach, linden flower and blanched almonds. It is medium weight, firm, fresh and very well balanced. Excellent length, with a touch of minerality. The length is excellent. Tasted December 2020

The family farms in the Collio DOC of Friuli Venezia Giulia where the hills of Giasbana encroach upon Slovenia in the far northeastern corner of Italy. While ribolla gialla, friulano, malvasia and sauvignon may dominate the white wine scene it is pinot grigio that is on the rise. Not a ubiquitous one but part of a focused, terroir-driven community. Zuani’s Sodevo is more Collio than pinot grigio but that being said it is so peach fleshy, unctuously arriving with mouthfeel, next level fruit sweetness and extra-über grigio texture. Surely apposite to the oft amazing collection of golden-hued, skin-contact, highly herbal and mineral-laden whites of Collio. This one is something other, so clean and fresh. Drink 2020-2023. Tasted December 2020.

A pinot grigio of above average flavour intensity and richness, this is clearly quality wine from low yielding vines. There's an uncommon richness and roundness, leaning more towards the prototypical Alsatian 'gris' style, yet with Italian flair and verve. It crosses a spectrum of flavours from citrus to orchard fruit, with notable floral and stony contributions, and a lightly smoky, sulfidic edge. Very good length. Good stuff. Tasted December 2020.

And so Réva attacks with a gentle touch, a short and cold maceration to secure nebbiolo kept in a “light” vein, with evident acidity. Carries the youthful "splendore" of beautiful red fruit. Since 1843, the Puiggros family has been producing wines from their own vines in the Odena region of Catalunya for the family and close friends. A sincere dedication to the terroir in their zone and the indigenous varieties that grow there, allows them to constantly discover ways to unlock all of the magic that lies within their land.
Starting with conscious and clean farming in the vineyard, they hand-harvest only the best fruit for their production, and ferment each vineyard separately in varying vessels to accentuate what the vines have to show; some in stainless steel, and many in clay amphora of differing sizes.
