Domaine de Bellene is the creation of Nicolas Potel – the son of the legendary Gérard Potel of Domaine Pousse d’Or. Potel's name has become synonymous with Burgundian wine and he is known for constantly challenging the borders of traditional winemaking in the region.

Jean Ferté was the person who persuaded Nicolas Potel's parents to move to Burgundy, so it's fitting that there should be a wine named for him. There are two parcels blended for this special cuvee: Les Peuillets, a plot planted in 1993 that covers 0.29 hectares and Les Hauts Jarrons, a plot of 47 hectares planted with vines from 1962 and 1975.

This is a structured wine, with muscle and power. Aromas of red berries and currants are followed by sweet, tangy, savoury and autumnal  notes of aromatic spices and forest floor. Fermented with 50% whole bunches and aged in 10% new wood.

About the vintage: A difficult vintage to say the least, but not one without merit. The region suffered reduced yields from spring frosts and a cool summer, meaning this vintage would have to be won through hard work in the vineyard and in the winery. This is a year of smaller quantities of fresh, refined and thoughtful wines from a full range of climats. A return to a cooler vintage, compared to recent years, will be sure to delight classic Burgundy lovers who favour elegance and finesse

93 Points - John Szabo, MS

Made from a blend of two premier crus vineyards, Les Hautes Jarrons and Les Peuillets, bottled unfined but lightly filtered after ageing in barrel of which 30% were new, this is a composed and complete wine, balanced, succulent and juicy on the palate, with a fine mix of red and darker fruit, but most of all evident energy and vitality. Tannins are ultra-fine in the Savigny idiom, and length and complexity are excellent. This is one of the sharper values in the Bellene estate portfolio, with a real stony-mineral character, still 2-4 years away from prime, or hold into the early-mid '30s.
