The domaine de Bellene is situated in the city center of Beaune in Burgundy France, where Nicolas Potel runs a successful winery and négociant operation. Nicolas is widely respected for his unrivalled local network, savvy salesmanship, and winemaking genius. Every wine in this offer comes from Nicolas' own vineyards, which are situated in Santenay, Saint Romain, Volnay, Beaune, Nuits Saint Georges and Vosne Romanée. Wines bottled under the Domaine de Bellene label – Bellene being a pre-Medieval name for Beaune, are made from old, well-established vines using biodynamic methods and low-intervention practices.
About the vintage: A difficult vintage to say the least, but not one without merit. The region suffered reduced yields from spring frosts and a cool summer, meaning this vintage would have to be won through hard work in the vineyard and in the winery. This is a year of smaller quantities of fresh, refined and thoughtful wines from a full range of climats. A return to a cooler vintage, compared to recent years, will be sure to delight classic Burgundy lovers who favour elegance and finesse.
Now the time is yours to journey through the most original expressions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from some of Burgundy's finest climats – the region's most exceptional vineyard sites. Beaune Voyage!

A fine follow up to the excellent 2020 edition of the same wine, the 2021 delivers significant crunchy fruit and sapidity from young vines (planted in 2014), with minimal, fully-integrated wood flavours, and appealingly crunchy-succulent flavours. Really quite excellent length and depth, too, in the category. For fans of finesse and liveliness.

This is a fairly rich and complex, and rare, white Savigny with a generous, complex and well integrated nose of peach, brown spice, toasted peanuts and hay. It is medium weight, tender and elegant - as are Savigny pinots - with a fine sense of minerality. The length is excellent. Very good value for fans of excellent white Burgundy

This is a powerful yet compact, mineral driven white Burgundy. Solid structure here! The nose shows generous, complex and detailed aromas of ripe peach/pineapple fruit, lemon, vague toast/smoke, pine nuts and some flint. It is medium-full bodied, firm and dry and warm, but not heavy. The finish is very mineral. The length is excellent to outstanding.

In 2013 the decision was made to plant chardonnay instead of pinot noir and here is yet another vintage to support that decision. More glaring this time in fact because while 2021 is a true throwback to the way things used to be in terms of hard, closed, unforgiving and austere pinot noir - such is not the case for chardonnay. Les Perrières is blessed with fruit, glorious but also grippy, tannic and high extract fruit. Not quite as aromatic as say Santenay but both texture and intensity are bigger, stronger and in serious command. This will age slowly and really well - the way it just sits in the glass for minutes on end without changing tells us that much. Drink 2024-2030

This is a classic Meursault in so many ways. First, the nose is all about layers of complexity with pear flan, hazelnut, light toast and fine brown cinnamon/nutmeg spice. It is full bodied, rich and fleshy but the acid core is terrific and well integrated. And despite all the largesse it maintains a sense of delicacy and minerality. This is so well focused and the length is outstanding

As a reminder, “Suchots” originates from “souches,” the name given to the woods before the land was prepared to host and nurture these vines. Les Suchots was first planted in 1937 and makes up approximately six percent of the 220 hectares for Vosne Romanée. The vintage was a challenging one and the resulting wines are of an ilk not seen for the past 25-30 years - yet these matters mean little when wines exist by dint of such consistently high quality. In fact in a wine like this the glory and the status are one, the parts seamless and interchangeable, the tension just an equal and opposite reaction to the grace. Suchots drinks beautifully and will do so for the next 20-25 years - this in the face of dare to pry open grip, restrained power and taut elasticity. It’s harmonious, beautiful, strict but oh so fair. It has our full respect. Drink 2025-2038.

This sturdy, fairly dense NSG shows a nicely ripe blackcurrant/cherry nose with violet perfume and considerable oak toast and spice. It is medium-full bodied in the pinot realm with very firm acid-tannin structure. Excellent flavour intensity and length. I would age this two or three years to let the tannins loosen.

As small as a plot gets, 0.3 hectare in size, planted in 1927, sandwiched between Echezeaux and Clos de Vougeot. A place of heroic, sustainable, focused and reasoned farming, for Nicolas Patel one of the exacting gems where pinot noir in the Côtes d’Or will find greatness and cast a spell. Yes the austerity, bound and wound intensity are off the proverbial charts to set this wine back 25 years but just a fifth of that time will be needed for its charm to show. The swell of red fruit is inspiring and 2021 or not the awe is noted. Vosne Romanée is represented with utmost esteem and time can only serve to embellish, replenish and increase the splendour of this complex wine. Drink 2026-2037.

Made from a blend of two premier crus vineyards, Les Hautes Jarrons and Les Peuillets, bottled unfined but lightly filtered after ageing in barrel of which 30% were new, this is a composed and complete wine, balanced, succulent and juicy on the palate, with a fine mix of red and darker fruit, but most of all evident energy and vitality. Tannins are ultra-fine in the Savigny idiom, and length and complexity are excellent. This is one of the sharper values in the Bellene estate portfolio, with a real stony-mineral character, still 2-4 years away from prime, or hold into the early-mid '30s.

This shows good colour depth and a nicely lifted, spicy nose with some blackcurrant, black cherry and violet. There is also considerable oak spice and vanillin. It is medium weight, firm, mineral and quite intense - very much on point for Nuits-Saint-Georges. There is a ferrous/iron streak that melds with the firm, slightly green tannin to dominate the finish. The length is excellent. Best 2025 to 2030.

From a Volnay lieu-dit planted in 1985, Potel's Grand Poisot 2021 is a beautifully detailed and fine-grained wine, the epitome of balance and poise, with a sapidity that runs from start to long finish, drawing saliva and desire for additional sips along the way. Neither reductive nor oxidative, it finds a comfortable and attractive milieu, displaying a range of bright, tart red fruit mixed with gentle spice, with the influence of oak (20% new) fully integrated into the ensemble. Tannins are silky-smooth, acids comfortable and length excellent. A Volnay of classical proportions, refreshingly fresh and refined after several years in a row of superripe, concentrated wines, a nostalgic call back to earlier times. Best 2025-2035

An assemblage of five premier crus parcels in Beaune, Potel's 2021 offers a waxy, earthy, wood spice-inflected profile (30% new), still quite backwards and undeveloped aromatically, but more yielding and pliable on the palate. Tannins are in fact quite silky-velvety, providing light grip, while acids are comfortably ripe, present but unobtrusive. I like the elegance on display, the typical Beaune refinement, and the sapid, minerally finish that draws saliva. I'd suggest another 3-4 years in the cellar for more aromatic/flavour development, or hold into the early '30s.

From a high-density 1956 planting of pinot noir, aged in 20% new wood and the rest in used barrels, this is complex and perfumed Saint Romain, especially spicy and stemmy in a good way, adding an impression of freshness and counter-balancing the ripe red berry fruit. The palate is mid-weight, properly firm and structured, with high sapidity and excellent length, and well-integrated, dusty tannins that still need some time to settle in. In the context of the region, I have to say this is an excellent value red Burgundy. I'd cellar for another 2-3 years minimum before enjoying, or hold until the end of the decade without concern. Great complexity and depth. Tasted May 2022.

This ticks two of the most important boxes for Savigny-Les-Beuanes. One is a lifted very floral aroma; the other is a certain tender and silky texture. The nose shows ripe cherry/raspberry fruit with lilac/rose florality and well integrated, quite spicy and rich oak. This is fairly pale, evolving ruby garnet. It has developed a fine, complex and detailed fragrance with pretty cherry fruit, florals, fine spice and subtle leather and earthy notes. It is medium weight with that firm Nuits Saint George core of almost rusty minerality. Lots of tannic grip still in place, with excellent length. Enjoy now with aeration or hold through 2030.
