90 points (2016) - David Lawrason
The 2016 vintage has put some punch into this inexpensive merlot-based Bordeaux. There is a sense of volume and energy. The nose is quite lifted with blackberry/raspberry fruit, notable herbal presence, some meatiness and spice. It is medium-full bodied, with warm alcohol, juicy acidity and some slightly green tannin. The length is excellent. Best 2025 to 2030

Blends merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc for a Right bank bruiser, especially at the cost. The wood is still very much in charge and if the 2014 showing at this stage is any indication then 2016 will need even more time to unwind. In this stage the merlot is in full command, verdant, savoury, herbal and with toasty oak flavours yet settled. Wait on this one. Drink 2022-2026. Tasted November 2021.

Château du Moulin Noir

This beautiful right-bank Bordeaux estate consistently produces high-value, elegant and classic Merlot dominant wines and is considered one of the most famous Château of this appellation. Located in Montagne-Saint-Emilion, Château Moulin Noir consists of seven hectares of vineyards on clay and limestone soils.
This château owes its name to a family feuddating back to the Middle Ages. Two brothers were arguing about their father’s legacy with the youngest brother being incredibly jealous that everything went to the elder. He was so jealous that he burnt the château to the ground - Moulin Noir translates to “blackened Mill”.

This notably complex right bank blend from a satellite appellation of Saint-Emilion offers appealing savory notes along with a mineral, iron component as well as licorice spice. The oak treatment is wonderfully integrated with wood spice elevating the bright red fruit. Harmoniously matured, graceful and very elegant. The staying power of the finish is impressive. Drinking very well now. Tasted January 2019.

Chateau Maucamps

Located in the Macau en Medoc region not far from the entry to the Margaux appellation. This chateau dates back to the 18th century and now covers 22.5 hectares planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) with Merlot making up 35% of the blend and Petit Verdot rounding out the classic blend with 5% of the final blend. Located near the Garonne River, the soils here are classic Garonne gravels with a clay sub-soil giving wines of classic mellow character with relatively smooth tannins and an elegant and fine structure making these wines remarkably consistent and approachable even in their youth. The vineyard is maintained under sustainable viticulture guidelines with an average age of vines around 35yo. Harvests are all done manually and vinification is quite classic: with temperature control capping the ferment temperature at 28c to retain freshness, total destemming, and regular pump-overs 3 times a day, the winemaking approach ensures gentle handling of fruit and a tendency towards finesse of tannins and structure. The percentage of new oak is kept to a minimum to ensure the fruit speaks clearly at all stages of the wines' long and graceful evolution. These are wines which typically age effortlessly for up to 20 years or more while also being enjoyable in their youth.

Always fun to have a gander backwards in Bordeaux, here from the 2008 vintage in the Macau en Médoc region near Margaux. The chateau dates back to the 1700s and this two-thirds to one-third cabernet sauvignon to merlot Haut-Médoc is quite youthful as compared to the 2006. A combination of reasons it would go to show, for one being two years apart and second a matter of comparative vintages. The ’06 is not one of greatest longevity while ’08 surely sneaks under the radar with aging capability. That said, as with the 2006, aeration causes a noticeable oxidation and decreased fruit energy. The wood still breathes, shows and exerts power, the secondary notes are in play but no real tertiary at this 13 year stage. Cool, mineral-licked, deeply resonant, roses and tar, even Cassis in its ethereal liqueur. Most definitely worth the price of admission, without a decant and a quick pour through six glasses. Drink 2021-2025.

About the Winery
Château Tour de Gilet

Château Tour de Gilet is located in Ludon Médoc, 16 km north of Bordeaux in the Médoc area. The Château was built on the foundation of an ancient abbey from the 12th century. At that time the vineyard was already surrounded by “jalles” or small criss-crossing drainage canals to help produce wines of higher quality. Today, oenologist Claude Gaudin makes an extraordinary wine at this small property, using techniques such as dense planting in the vineyard and green harvesting to lower the yield, sorting at the harvest and very natural wine making for maximum expression of the fruit.
Claude Gaudin is renowned for turning out several of Bordeaux’s best Petits Châteaux wines. In addition to Château Tour de Gilet, Gaudin fashions two outstanding Petits Châteaux that border the Margaux commune, Château Barreyre and Château Laronde Desormes, as well as the celebrated Château Maurac Haut Médoc, whose neighbors are the renowned Château Sociando-Mallet and Château Charmail in Sainte-Estèphe.

A gently maturing Bordeaux with a great deal of brightness, purity and finesse. Features fine tannins, refreshing acidity, moderate alcohol and very nuanced wood - a sophisticated balance of elements. Drinking beautifully now given the majority of fresh fruit and still some tannic grip, this should continue to develop favourably for the next 3-5 years. Pulls above its Bordeaux Superieur class. Tasted September 2022.

This has matured into a fine space. It is quite elegant and poised with a complex, well woven nose of redcurrant, raspberry fruit, fresh herbs, graphite and early onset tertiary leather. It has achieved real grace, with some heat, fine tannin. The focus and length is excellent. Tasted March 2023

Extremely enticing aromas of ripe plums and peaches with spices, such as nutmeg. Full-bodied, deep and firmly textured with beautiful fruit and a lovely, long and flavourful finish. Best since 1989. Try after 2021.

This great vintage continues to show-off. This very much alive, elegant and intense with well proportioned and integrated aromas of vibrant raspberry fruit, tobacco, cedar, graphite and some maturing earthiness. I like the energy and vibrancy, with firm tannin still, and excellent length. Tasted March 2023

Tasting this after the very mature 2012 makes this 2010 seem like a young pup in comparison. So youthful in fact there persists a spring in its step and freshness on the fruit dominant aromatics. No haste to the secondary here in fact that stage is barely upon this Lussac Saint-Émilion Right Bank wine. Five dollars cheaper as well so much more of a value and great deal for restaurant lists, but also those who are looking for immediate consumption in well-aged Bordeaux. This is where where you want it for either of those reasons. Some sweet and sour caramel and seasoned burnt ends are beefy and delicious at the finish. Drink 2023-2025. Tasted March 2023.

For this 2010 blend, grapes are sourced from a satellite region of Bordeaux known as Lussac-Saint-Emilion even though the estate is located in neighbouring Montagne-Saint Emilion. Lussac-Saint-Emilion is the northernmost of the satellites and is slightly higher and more hilly than the others. The name of the estate means "blackened mill", and is in reference to two feuding brothers of the Middle Ages one of which burned the Château to the ground. From an excellent vintage, this 13-year-old wine has held up remarkably well and is a delight to drink at present, salty and a touch ferrous with dried wild herbs, leather and macerated cherry on the palate. The tannins have been abated over time adding a velvety volume to the palate. Excellent length. Tasted April 2023.
