About the Winery
Château Tour de Gilet

Château Tour de Gilet is located in Ludon Médoc, 16 km north of Bordeaux in the Médoc area. The Château was built on the foundation of an ancient abbey from the 12th century. At that time the vineyard was already surrounded by “jalles” or small criss-crossing drainage canals to help produce wines of higher quality. Today, oenologist Claude Gaudin makes an extraordinary wine at this small property, using techniques such as dense planting in the vineyard and green harvesting to lower the yield, sorting at the harvest and very natural wine making for maximum expression of the fruit.
Claude Gaudin is renowned for turning out several of Bordeaux’s best Petits Châteaux wines. In addition to Château Tour de Gilet, Gaudin fashions two outstanding Petits Châteaux that border the Margaux commune, Château Barreyre and Château Laronde Desormes, as well as the celebrated Château Maurac Haut Médoc, whose neighbors are the renowned Château Sociando-Mallet and Château Charmail in Sainte-Estèphe.

Deeply-coloured and clearly ripe, also still notably wood-inflected, this is a thick and chewy red Bordeaux, maturing but on the cusp between youthful fruit and savoury maturity - a fine time to enjoy it. I like the density and weight on the palate, the voluptuous and sweet, dark fruit flavours, and the velvety tannins. The finish, too, is impressively long in the category. A very solid value all in all. Tasted May 2022.

Ludon en Médoc may be off the beaten track to many and yet with this most amenable vintage a truly democratic wine is the result. Parks right in the proverbial wheelhouse for aged Bordeaux still hanging on to its original ideas. Just hints at animal musk and must but acids ring alive and true, tannins hang tight and wood still sits in the director’s chair. Though a wine of elévage and ambition the rise one gets is more than something. Drink 2022-2026. Tasted May 2022.

Chateau Tour de Gilet is only 16 kilometres from the city of Bordeaux in the Médoc with winemaking under the direction of Claude Gaudin who produces low-yielding wines with a light-handed touch. This silky 2016 Bordeaux Superieur dominated by merlot with an addition of 30% cabernet sauvignon is drinking at its peak. Notes of plum, cherry, dusty cocoa, tilled earth and elegant wood spice. An excellent value with memorable length. Tasted June 2022.
