2019 vintage review: Taken from San Sebastiano area, vines 15-20 years old in Monforte d’Alba. “We have a special view of the nebbiolo," tells Daniele Gaia. "In our point of view it has to show the character of the grape, flowers, drinkability and approachable, not a baby Barolo." And so Réva attacks with a gentle touch, a short and cold maceration to secure nebbiolo kept in a “light” vein, with evident acidity. Carries the youthful "splendore" of beautiful red fruit. A precociousness unhindered, on hinges, in ultra comfortable balance. Drink 2020-2024. Tasted January 2020.

Punset

She transformed all 20 hectares of her land into a fully organic vineyard during a time where major producers of Barolo and Barbaresco were abandoning tradition to compete commercially. Instead of following the trend, she struck out on her own, and made wines that resonated with her past and passions. Known for the very first certified organic Barbaresco of Italy, Marina continues to show the world that you can preserve tradition and think of the future simultaneously.

As well as a Riserva from Basarin, Punset produce one from a 1ha parcel in the San Cristoforo cru, called Campo Quadro. The two wines are styled differently, the Basarin being aged traditionally whereas the Campo Quadro matures in both barriques and tonneaux. There are assertive smoky cherry aromas on the nose, while the palate is dense, weighty and somewhat extracted. There is balancing acidity to lift the finish, but at present it lacks finesse. Drinking Window 2021 - 2036.

Bright raspberries and red cherries on the nose, colored with notes of roses, ripe watermelon and dry soil. Medium-bodied with lightly firm tannins and lots of immediacy on the palate. This is hyper-tense and brimming with exciting, youthful energy. Super length already. Exuberant and exciting to taste now, and you might well be tempted. But this is a classy Cannubi for the cellar. Best from 2024 or 2025.

Novello. A vineyard with a coolish microclimate. It is on the crest of the hill and with an east-south-east exposure, so it is less hit by the sun.
Healthy looking, just mid ruby. Perfumed, sweet cherry fruit nose with a hint of mace. Supple, juicy fruit that is still a bit closed, and with fresh acidity and long, sandy tannins. Sets on elegance rather than power or concentration. Great length and with a long, tannic impact. (WS)

This to me is a classic Barolo vintage captured with utmost care and respect by Réva. The 2018 Baroli are not likely going to amalgamate as the most obviously decadent or structured nebbioli but they can be timely reflections into the appellation. This is what the team at Réva has looked at, considered and coaxed from a wine that represents and by that I mean stands as a cross-sectional cuvée for their important set of vineyards. The 2016 Barolo is a great wine though its austerity means it’s still not functionally available and will serve a select few when it gets to the intended destination. In 2018 nebbiolo stands out bright, aromatic and clear, seasoned by wood, earth and herbs, linear, direct and transparent. The purity and functionality serve the people and does so with heart open wide, worn on a gifted, but never gilded sleeve. This is not a precious wine but do embrace the gift. Drink 2023-2031. Tasted May 2022.

The single vineyard cru Lazazarito is added in 2016 and it is Daniele Gaia’s first harvest at Réva. Drive the best car and drive it right away. “This is the best wine Réva has never made, “ says Gaia with great irony and humility. Tasted from low temperatures (22-24 degrees) in tank there was fear of Lazzrito’s tannins. Here above Sewrralunga a long strip on the top of the eastern side of the hill gives a marl-calcaire meets sandy soikl and so the best of both structural worlds; freshness (also from high pH) and grip. Yes it’s silly young and impressionable but already handsome, unadorned and fruit so crunchy, yet also sapid, a pinch salty and the impression of acidity is a freshness with thanks to that elevated pH. A sample but already in bottle and will be released in two years. Drink 2024-2036. Tasted January 2020.

This is quite a potent Barolo riserva, offering plenty of ripe berries and lightly polished oak on the nose. Full-bodied with lightly grainy, largely oak tannins and a long finish. Undoubtedly well made and intact and will appeal to those who like their nebbiolo well oaked. Drink or hold.

92 points - Top 40 Barbera d'Asti
The Borio family has lived in the Costigliole hills since the 12th century. Mariuccia began making quintessential Barberas like this one in 1970 on her 30 hectares of vineyards. Floral, crunchy, fresh-tasting and engaging; juicy with focused fruit.

A Lovely, crunchy barbera in modern packaging. In addition to crunch, the palate is substantial and the long oak ageing is deliciously integrated. Offering very good structure and finesse with an unmanipulated feel. Named after great-aunt "Litina" whose dowry brought the vineyard to the family. Very good length. Tasted August 2020.

Sister wine Passum by Costigiole d'Asti's Cascina Castlet is a thick varietal stew with lightning bolts of acidity and grippy structure. Such a big wine of larger than life personality with white peppery piques and properly spiced, mild dark chocolate bitterness. Will age without trepidation or any true concern. Litina repeats the mantra albeit with more depth and also more barrel concern. A stronger and more ambitious barbera than its sibling with increased bones, karst and structure. Drink 2021-2026. Tasted August 2020.

This is a pretty and serious barbera. Not highly lifted and aromatic but authentic with raspberry/currant fruit, barbera's charcuterie note and some herbality. It is medium-full bodied, fairly dense with firm acidity, alcohol warmth and tannin. Nice sense of proportion here. Fairly tannic and the length is excellent. Give it two years. Tasted August 2020.

Juicy, lively, vibrant but dense and concentrated barbera here, with typically light and supple tannins, fresh acids, and plenty of ripe black cherry fruit on the palate. Length and depth are very good. Solid wine. Tasted August 2020.
