About the Winery
Radford Dale
Radford Dale and The Winery of Good Hope are two brands made by the same people, in the same winery. The team behind these wineries has been an industry leader since the 1990s in chemical free farming, and more recently in low and no sulfur winemaking. They are a founding member of PIWOSA (Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa) which sets ethical, environmental and social uplift standards. Recognizing the social inequality present in South Africa Radford Dale has also set up a trust called Land of Hope to help facilitate bright futures for children, focusing heavily on education.Alex Dale who owns and manages both projects is an Englishman who grew up spending summers in Burgundy, France. He moved there in his late teens to follow a passion for winemaking and also opened a wine bar in Beaune. He lived in Burgundy for many years before moving to South Africa in 1998, starting Radford Dale with Ben Radford, an Australian. The idea was to produce wines using modern techniques and technology with a healthy respect for tradition, something Alex came to understand well while living in Burgundy.
Wines are made with minimal intervention in order to best express each vineyard’s individuality.Press Reviews

A lovely balance here between the rich pear and peach fruit, with some bright tapering citrus fruit. Nice tangerine finish. Fresh and expressive with good precision. A wine that will drink for 5+ years from vintage.

Great Heart is a brand wholly owned by employees who work for the Mullineux and Leeu families - leading producers in the Swartland region. This is a very fine, bright, balanced and delicious chenin with generous aromas of lemon, spiced pear, and elderflower. It is medium-full bodied, smooth yet fresh and lively with somewhat elevated lemony acidity creating a tart finish and somewhat brittle texture. The length is excellent.

A joint venture benefitting the winery employees of the Mullineux and Leeu Family Wines, this project is aimed at improving the livelihood of the staff and their families through the profits generated by Great Heart sales. The label features a Cape Wagtail bird that bears a marking that resembles a heart on its chest plumage and is known for its acts of selflessness and courage in assisting others in South African folklore. Great Heart's red blend is typically led by syrah and this incarnation is notably expressive of the grape's peppery and generous nature. Full-bodied but not heavy, this engaging blend features delicate oak and fruit-derived spice, an abundance of black fruit and no shortage of personality. Lithe tannins, an undercurrent of freshness make for a gratifying textural experience. Excellent length. Best now to 2026. T

The 2021 The Bees is composed of 100% Viognier and offers hints of citrus and honeycomb with a waxy and nutty marzipan essence. Medium-bodied, the wine offers meringue flavors before showing a delightful textural element that sways with pleasure and purity of fruit. A Southern Rhône-style blend, the 2020 The Birds is composed of 57% Grenache, 28% Shiraz and 15% Mourvedre. The nose offers a mineral-driven essence with red fruit and spicy red tea aromas. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate is focused and remains mineral before offering a tannic edge with a food-friendly finish. It’s a delightful red blend and will perform well in youth with food.

This is a typically hefty Cape syrah yet made with polish and flair. The aromatic intensity is very good with a core of black cherry fruit and amid layers of smoke, pepper and dried meat typical of the variety. It is quite full bodied but not heavy, with very well balanced alcohol, acid and slightly crusty tannin. Those smoky/tarry notes roll onto the finish, hitting excellent length. Great BBQ red.

This is an unusual blend of syrah, edgy yet fragrant petit verdot and mourvedre with some viognier to add cush. It has a generous, quite rich and compelling nose of plum/blackberry jam, deep hibiscus florality, gentle clove and peppery spice and vanilla. It is full bodied, broad and hefty with alcohol power and warmth, firm but not austere tannin (thanks to the PV) and MV) and all kinds of spice and garrigue on the finish. Excellent to outstanding length. This is really well designed if on the fringe for some.
