The Crater Rim is a family-owned boutique winery situated in the rolling hills of Waipara, in the South Island of New Zealand. They produce sustainably crafted, terroir-driven wines from carefully selected sites well-suited to the varietals they cultivate. The first vintage produced by The Crater Rim was from a small hillside vineyard, high above the town of Akaroa on Banks Peninsula – and so the brand ‘The Crater Rim’ was born.

Winemaker and Viticulturist Haydon Good strives to make wines of character and quality through a watchful, non-interventionist style. He uses a combination of new and traditional techniques and technology to allow the fruit to become wine. Haydon focuses on allowing the vineyard character to shine through in every bottle produced.

The fruit was slowly fermented in a mix of seasoned French oak barriques and small tanks to create a textured wine whilst preserving crisp fruit characters. Revealing subtle notes of wood spice with pretty aromas of grapefruit sorbet, guava and baked apple in the glass. The palate offers a pleasantly creamy texture with plenty of zest and great fruit intensity long into the finish.

Try this wine with creamy pasta dishes or seared scallops with chopped fresh herbs.

It's delightfully fruited and complex on the nose showing Gala apple, grapefruit, oatmeal, subtle flint and lime zest characters. The palate is wonderfully weighted and persistent, displaying juicy fruit intensity backed by vibrant acidity, finishing long and attractively savoury. At its best: now to 2023. www.thecraterrim.co.nz. June 2020.

A sauvignon blanc well out of the NZ mainstream style to be sure, this partially barrel fermented example from North Canterbury delivers a complex and intriguing mix of lemon custard, orange blossom, exotic guava and passion fruit, more reminiscent of white Bordeaux or Friuli sauvignon than the commercial Marlborough version of the grape. The palate is quite broad, rich and flavourful, and length is very good to excellent. I really like the succulence and the balance, driving additional sips, and the overall complexity. There's a lot of wine here for the money. Drink or hold 2-4 years. Tasted January 2022.
