Domaine de Bellene is the creation of Nicolas Potel – the son of the legendary Gérard Potel of Domaine Pousse d’Or. Potel is a big name in Burgundian winemaking, and he is known for constantly challenging the borders of winemaking in Burgundy.

Nicolas Potel has a real talent for producing super white wines in so-called lesser terroirs, such as this Santenay lieu-dit, using larger oak barrels to complement rather than dominate the fruit. An intriguing wine with a beguiling profile of white flowers, yellow fruits and citrusy acidity.

About the vintage: The 2020 vintage is absolutely excellent, lauded as 'almost a dream vintage' by top UK wine buyers and something that you should snap up while you can – especially since it’s clear that there’s going to be very little wine coming out of Burgundy next year (and at much higher prices!)
It is abundantly clear that 2020 produced some magnificent wines, with exceptional balance, freshness and full fruit maturity, yet that also remain very Burgundian in style. There is very little not to like.

Les Charmes Dessus is to be found as the flats sprawl abutting the hills of the lieu-dit Charmes Dessus on one side and the Premier Cru Clos Rousseau on the other. Young 16 year-old Santenay vines grown in calcareous terroir to properly represent southerly Beaune. A wee bit of noble rot (two per cent, on average), adds mystique and exoticism for Bourgogne chardonnay and in 2020 there is again a discernible honeyed to mango note. Aging in 600L demi-muid barrels slowly brings about micro-oxygenation for one of Potel’s and Bourgogne’s most unique expressions of chardonnay. The type of tang is so very blood citrus but orange is not a colour that comes to mind. Sanguine of stone, bled through terroir, chanced upon a place that breathes just this way. Drink 2022-2026. Tasted May 2022.
