Ricardo Carreiro founded Coto de Gomariz in the seventies, when he managed to return to his land after emigrating to South America like so many other Galicians. His dream was to make wines and restore Gomariz's prestige as a historical vineyard. Known as the "Golden Mile" of the Ribeiro since the 10th century, Gomariz is the oldest Viticultural Reserve in the Iberian Peninsula and has exceptional characteristics for growing grapes.

2 bottles x Coto de Gomariz X Albariño D.O. Ribeiro 2021 (Galicia, Spain)

White | Albariño

X is for "xisto," the Galician spelling of schist, the dominant soil in the vineyards used for this wine:As Penelas and O Taboleiro. This is a rare bottling, as it is made mostly from Albariño, a grape that does not abound in the Riberio region.

It has an expressive nose that goes beyond the pure varietal expression, and the palate reveals great elegance, intense and powerful, with developed flavours. They like ripe and flavourful fruit here but not over-ripeness. This comes from vines planted in 2001, and the wine is produced in a traditional way, bottled unoaked after time in contact with the lees.

Pairing suggestion: enjoy it with seafood.

1 bottles x Coto de Gomariz Finca O Figueiral D.O. Ribeiro 2018 (Galicia, Spain)
White | Albariño, Godello, Torrontés, Treixadura

94 points by Robert Parker

O Figueiral, a plot that surrounds the estate, was the first plot restored by Carreiro after coming back from South America in the seventies. Made exclusively with grapes grown at O Figueiral, this white wine is a field blend of Treixadura, Lado, Albariño, Godello, Loureira, and a myriad of other indigenous varieties from Galicia. Fermentation kicks off in stainless steel tanks and finishes in 500L French oak barrels with batônnage, something that adds a special creaminess and texture to the wine. There is yellow fruit, balsam, spices, herbs and reminiscences of wet stones. The palate is compact and the flavours focused, pure and long. The palate is very focused, precise, and nicely chiseled, with delineation and minerality that make it very tasty and long. It has great freshness and balance with no trace of flavours from the ten months it spent in barrel.

Pairing suggestion: this wine will pair beautifully with any seafood and fish dishes, as well as with creamy cheeses.

2 bottles x Coto de Gomariz Abadía de Gomariz D.O. Ribeiro 2017 (Galicia, Spain)

Red | Brancellao, Sousón, Ferrol, Mencía

Abadía de Gomariz is a blend Sousón (50%) with some Brancellao, Ferrol and Mencía, all indigenous varieties of Galicia. The grapes grow in terraces and slopes surrounding the estate, where the soil is mainly granite and schist. Beautifully complex on the nose, the Abadía de Gomariz opens up with a dark fruit bouquet of black cherry, black currant and liquorice; all of which mingle with earthy notes of tree bark, finely crushed granite, wisps of smoke and botanicals. The wine reveals itself on the palate as a full-bodied wine, with moderate tannins and a special grip, signature of the complex soils of the vineyard.

Pairing suggestion: pair with game and flavourful dishes.
