Structured & Refined

At the very top of the hill overlooking the northern Rhône town of Ampuis, you’ll find the humble yet rising-star estate of Christophe Billon. Since 1991, Christophe has crafted honest, authentic Syrah wines from the steep, terraced slopes of Côte-Rôtie. His family’s roots here go back generations; the family’s oldest parcel of vines can trace its origins back to the end of the second world war.

Truly a working winemaker, Christophe for years balanced the demands of his job at Guigal with his own domaine, finally dedicating himself completely to the family project in 2007. His son, Corentin, after finishing his wine studies in 2015, now works at his father’s side.

A selection of fruit from four separate parcels, representing equally the two terroir “sides” of Côte-Rôtie, ‘Les Elotins’ is a floral beauty, dense and refined, beautiful today yet also structured for the long haul.

The traditional blend of Syrah with just a touch of Viognier makes this excellent example of the power, finesse and understated elegance of Côte-Rôtie. Aromas of black cherries, raspberries, pepper dominate and the palate is full bodied and deep with present yet fine-grained tannins.

This product is part of the LCBO Vintages program. It may take approximately 10-14 business days to be delivered.

Brilliant stuff, Billon's 2016 Côte Rôtie Les Elotins is a blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier that spent 22 months in once- and twice-used barrels. Deep, rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, it has more depth and richness than most in this classic, charming vintage. Saturated purple-colored, with terrific notes of cassis, blackberries, scorched earth, violets, and graphite, it hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, good acidity, and present yet sweet tannins, all of which give it a classic feel. Drink this balanced, layered 2016 any time over the coming 10-15 years.

Opaque ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes mineral-accented blackberry, cherry liqueur, exotic spices and incense, along with a subtle potpourri nuance. Coats the palate with sappy black and blue fruit preserve flavors complemented by suggestions of star anise, olive, smoked meat and candied violet. Appealingly sweet and concentrated, showing sharp focus and sneaky tannins on the long, penetrating finish. All used oak. Drinking window: 2023-2031.
