The Canary Islands are a mysterious archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Morocco. Since the 15th century, settlers from all over Europe have passed by this remote enclave, leaving in it their culture, wine grape and winemaking knowledge. The Islands represent one of the best-preserved vestiges of vines in the world!
Thanks to their volcanic origin, these grapes have been preserved over centuries. Since 1990, Bodegas Viñátigo has worked tireless recuperating the almost extinct grape varieties of the Islands. Discover a selection of 6 different wines from this incredible paradise of viticulture.
This mixed case includes 1 bottle of each wine:
1 bottle x Viñatigo Listán Blanco 2021 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
White | Listan Blanco de Canarias
The vines are trained in ‘parrales’: training vertical structures that adapt to the hills and ravines created by the last eruptions of Teide volcano towards the north of the island. This wine is very fresh and has a vibrant acidity. On the nose, it has fragrant aromas of fennel, dried fruits and fig tree leaves; as well as a distinct mineral quality that is a result of the volcanic soils.
Pairing suggestion: this crisp white calls for grilled fish, potatoes and 'mojo verde', a typical sauce from the Islands made of garlic, cilantro and olive oil.
1 bottle x Viñatigo Marmajuelo 2021 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
White | Marmajuelo
Marmajuelo's origin is still a mystery nowadays. In the late 90's, Juan Jesus found a couple vines of this grape in the island of El Hierro, and started to replant it in Tenerife. Today, there are only 25 hectares planted with Marmajuelo in the world, scattered in small plots in the islands of Tenerife and El Hierro. It grows ungrafted at a very low altitude, below 300 meters above sea level, under the constant influence of the Ocean breeze.
On the nose, tropical aromas of passion fruit, pineapple and banana leaves intermingle. On the palate it's fresh, with great texture.
Pairing suggestion: amazing wine to pair with seafood and fresh fish.
1 bottle x Viñatigo Gual 2021 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
White | Gual
Brought to the Canary Islands by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Juan Jesús found the grape Gual in the island of El Hierro in the late 90's. Incredibly aromatic: with layers of smokiness, floral notes such as jasmine; and tropical fruits like pineapples. On the palate, it has a creamy texture, with an amazing balanced acidity.
Pairing suggestion: pair this rich and mineral white with white meats and rich fish dishes.
1 bottle x Viñátigo Vijariego Blanco 2021 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
White | Vijariego Blanco
Vijariego Blanco is a unique grape variety from the Canary Islands, whose main characteristics are its great adaptability to different environments and it's crazy acidity. At Viñátigo, Juan Jesus ferments and ages the juice in barrels, creating the perfect creaminess that balances the killer acidity. On the nose, Vijariego Blanco has a high and well-balanced aromatic intensity. It has outstanding pear, vanilla and smoky undertones. Intense on the palate with a zippy freshness that is unique to this variety and a saltiness that comes from the volcanic soils.
Pairing suggestion: pair this wine with grilled fish or roasted chicken. It's creaminess and complexity will enhance the favours of the meal!
1 bottle x Viñatigo Listán Negro 2020 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
Red | Listan Negro
Listán Negro is a grape that Viñátigo cultivates in the mid-lands, in the north-west of Tenerife. This grape is a native grape variety of the Canary Islands, as it originated from a natural crossing between the grapes Listán Blanco and Negramoll, both brought by Portuguese and Andalusian settlers between the 15th and 18th centuries. The grapes are hand-harvested by mid- September and the wine ages in old barrels for three months. It’s a delightful and juicy red, with aromas of black pepper, dark fruits, and a strong mineral, volcanic character.
Pairing suggestion: it's the perfect 'chatting' wine: gather with friends and uncork this juicy beauty. A good conversation with friends and a charcuterie board is the best pairing. It matches very well with traditional cuisine from the Canaries: fried rabbit marinated in spicy 'mojo rojo' sauce; or beef stew with boiled potatoes.
1 bottle x Viñátigo Vijariego Negro 2020 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
Red | Vijariego Negro
Viñatigo's Vijariego Negro plot is in El Palmar valley, a rural and protected area in the very north-west of Tenerife. The slopes of this valley have resulted from the erosion of Teno's massif, Tenerife's first volcanic land that emerged from the Ocean 11 million years ago. At 700 meters above sea level, the weather is more extreme than by the Ocean, this range of temperatures ensure a deep concentration in the grapes. Vijariego Negro ages for 10 months in barrels. This wine is smoky and saline, with aromas of blackcurrant and fine tannins on the palate. Only the combination of the volcanic soils and the Atlantic climate can make this happen!
Pairing suggestion: perfect to pair with red meats or rich proteins.
