3XP is the triumvirate styling of Tawse winemaker Paul Pender, Ontario wine importer Nicholas Pearce and Sommelier Will Predhomme. It's the latest song release in the epic Pearce-Predhomme négoce journey, a progressive-art-album rock venture replete with eleven-minute opus material, but this one is the hit with a recognizable and catchy hook. It's Hungry Heart, I Will Get by and Lucky Man wrapped up into one three-minute chardonnay play. The sip-swirl-swallow trilogy is like verse-chorus-verse and repeat. It's straightforward sharp, tart and flavourful chardonnay that only Paul Pender could make and it's consume-ability factor is one of threefold manifest destiny. The number three is a very important number in biblical and mythological study. It "is the first number to which the meaning "all" was given. It is The Triad, being the number of the whole as it contains the beginning, a middle and an end. The power of three is universal and is the tripartide nature of the world as heaven, earth, and waters. It is human as body, soul and spirit." As for this PPP chardonnay, just drink it up and enjoy. For the next three years. Drink 2018-2020. Tasted July 2018.

Radford Dale

Alex Dale who owns and manages both projects is an Englishman who grew up spending summers in Burgundy, France. He moved there in his late teens to follow a passion for winemaking and also opened a wine bar in Beaune. He lived in Burgundy for many years before moving to South Africa in 1998, starting Radford Dale with Ben Radford, an Australian. The idea was to produce wines using modern techniques and technology with a healthy respect for tradition, something Alex came to understand well while living in Burgundy.
Wines are made with minimal intervention in order to best express each vineyard’s individuality.Press Reviews

Radford Dale’s “Thirst” line falls under the category of what would be considered natural and sustainable wines in the freshest and wildest expressions that include gamay, cinsault and this clairette. The extreme flint strike off the nose is one of mineral clarity and clear as day matchstick behaviour. Reduction and captured sulphites have not yet dissipated so crank up the agitation and get your swirl on. The clairette revealed is naked as the day it was pressed, lemon zesty and like a mouthful of marigold and wasabi. There may be some hate thrown Thirst’s way but the love you may feel for this wine is warranted, quite OK and accepted. Be yourself and embrace the feeling. Drink 2021-2023. Tasted January 2021.

Vitas

The Vitas Winery has been in the family since 1935, for four generations. It is located in the wine-producing area of DOC Friuli Aquileia, on a clayey-marly and sandy-calcareous soil (the so-called Magredi), one of the ingredients which, together with the influence of the sea and a friendly sun, create a perfect microclimate for vine-growing. A lot of importance is placed on conserving the environment and they use methods that protect their natural resources and the surrounding environment

About the Winery
Channing Daughters

Atlantic breezes cool Channing Daughters vineyards creating a climate hospitable to a wide array of fascinating grape varieties. At Channing Daughters they grow and create wines from over two dozen varieties. They are the only winery on the East End growing and producing wines from Blaufrankisch, Tocai Friulano, among many other unusual grapes. Their home is a beautiful plot of land in Bridgehampton that contains twenty-eight acres of vines, a small winery and tasting room. Channing Daighters sources about fifty percent of our grapes from special sites and people on the North Fork.
Channing Daughters Winery's foremost commitment is the care of their grapevines and the quality of wine in the bottle. Their priorities are deliciousness and reflection of our place! Starting with intense and careful culture of the vines to the hand-picking of ALL grapes, gentle whole cluster-pressing of white fruit, stomping by foot with punch-down by hand of red grapes, and gravity bottling, their methods remain traditional and artisanal. Wine is grown by hand at Channing Daughters.

Viñátigo

Juan Jesús is a proud native of Tenerife and the fourth generation of growers. During the thirty years that he's overseen Bodegas Viñátigo, he has considerably increased its holdings, planting varieties that he and his team recuperated from near extinction.
Driven by passion and love for his homeland, Juan decided to revive and work to save the native grape varieties that were brought to the Canary Islands by the conquers back in the 15th century and that had survived on the islands for centuries. He is a hero of contemporary Canarian viticulture. The wealth of knowledge that his work has created has helped underpin the significant expansion of wine styles that are now available throughout the archipelago, and his wines have achieved a calibre of class that many doubted the Canaries would ever produce again. (The Epic Wines of the Canary Islands, written by Santo Bains).

From ancient, pergola-trained, own-rooted vines, described on the label as pre-phylloxera (though phylloxera has never arrived in the Canary Islands), this is explosive, aromatic listán blanco, aka palomino, among the most intriguing and flavourful that I have tried. It's an essence of liquid stone, smoky and sulfide-tinged, with essential oil of resinous herbs, lemon thyme and rosemary, shifting slowly into tropical fruit, pineapple, and so much more. The palate is broad, fresh, sharp but not angular, with no wood detected, though also intensely flavoured, with terrific length, highly volcanic. Terrific wine, and a steal at the price in my view. Tasted December 2020.

The quick refresher on the grape listán blanco reminds us that it was brought to the Canary Islands in the 18th century by Andalusian conquerers. Viñátigo cultivates on volcanic terroir at 500m with vines trained in “parrales,” a vertical method for adaptation to hillsides over ravines inherited by the Portuguese that settled on the northern part of the island back in the 15th century. Imagine alvarinho and albariño styles merging in hyperbole or a doubling down upon themselves so that crisp freshness and also sweet herbals are magnified in the greatest of ways. So unique and layered, sumptuous and satisfying. Drink 2020-2024. Tasted December 2020.

From the volcanic soils of the Canary Islands, there is distinct smoky/sulphuric cast to the nose of this nervy, dry white - I think from the volcanic soils. It is mineral to its core. Fruit descriptors are elusive other than grapefruit perhaps. But there is peppery spice, and salinity. It is medium weight, firm and dry but not the least austere. The length is excellent. Zuani

Zuani winery is located in the heart of Collio, Friuli, a hidden appellation between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. Coming from a long tradition of winemakers in Croatia that goes back to the 19th century, Patrizia Felluga saw her dream come true when she acquired the estate and the vineyards in 2001. Today, her son and daughter have taken over the winery; producing exclusively white wines. Everything hinges on one exceptionally well exposed “cru”, or vineyard, on a gentle hillside where about eleven acres of vines and gardens surround the Zuani cellar.
The varietals planted are Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon, a carefully chosen range that produced the first vintage of Zuani Collio Bianco. The Zuani winery embodies the Felluga family winemaking heritage and expresses the fundamental unity of the traditional aspects of Friulian varieties with their more modern side.

Here's a solid, mid-weight pinot grigio with better structure and depth than the expected. It seems to be a bit riper with classic peach, linden flower and blanched almonds. It is medium weight, firm, fresh and very well balanced. Excellent length, with a touch of minerality. The length is excellent. Tasted December 2020

The family farms in the Collio DOC of Friuli Venezia Giulia where the hills of Giasbana encroach upon Slovenia in the far northeastern corner of Italy. While ribolla gialla, friulano, malvasia and sauvignon may dominate the white wine scene it is pinot grigio that is on the rise. Not a ubiquitous one but part of a focused, terroir-driven community. Zuani’s Sodevo is more Collio than pinot grigio but that being said it is so peach fleshy, unctuously arriving with mouthfeel, next level fruit sweetness and extra-über grigio texture. Surely apposite to the oft amazing collection of golden-hued, skin-contact, highly herbal and mineral-laden whites of Collio. This one is something other, so clean and fresh. Drink 2020-2023. Tasted December 2020.

A pinot grigio of above average flavour intensity and richness, this is clearly quality wine from low yielding vines. There's an uncommon richness and roundness, leaning more towards the prototypical Alsatian 'gris' style, yet with Italian flair and verve. It crosses a spectrum of flavours from citrus to orchard fruit, with notable floral and stony contributions, and a lightly smoky, sulfidic edge. Very good length. Good stuff. Tasted December 2020.

Domaine Alzipratu

On the island of Corsica, located in the North-West of the Island, the estate was created in the 1960s by Baron Henry Louis de La Grange, then owner of the Alzipratu convent. The estate was managed by Maurice Acquaviva before being taken over by his son Pierre and his wife Cécilia. The 40 hectare vineyard is made up of several plots facing south and is divided into two parts.
The first is to the north of the convent, near Zilia, the second is located 10 km west of the village of Calenzana in the upper Figarella valley where they cultivate the traditional Corsican varieties. Located at the foot of Monte Grossu (highest point 1950 meters) and a few minutes from the shore, their vines benefit from a contrasting sea-mountain climatic influence. Passionate for this environment, Pierre works vintage after vintage to express the uniqueness of the Corsican terroir through the purity of his wines.

Claude Riffault

Based in the village of Sury-en-Vaux, the Stéphane Riffault works 33 different parcels in 8 different lieu-dits spread across 4 villages. The 13.5 hectares of vines are certified organic and biodynamic. Unlike most Sancerre producers, the entire harvest is carried out by hand and an extensive sorting takes place before the grapes are crushed.
Most of the domaine’s holdings are planted on the soft limestone soil called terres blanches with some parcels on calliottes and silex. With Riffault having studied and worked in Burgundy (and closely with Olivier Leflaive), it’s easy to see the Burgundian influence in Stéphane’s wines. The mastery of minerality standing shoulder to shoulder with the wood is rarely duplicated in Sancerre.

About the Winery
Leaning Post

A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it. Nadia and Ilya have had to rely on the support of family, friends and financial institutions to make the dream of owning a winery a reality. Leaning Post began as a virtual winery and is so proud to now have the quaint tasting room at 1491 Hwy 8 on their home property in Winona, Ontario.
Ilya and Nadia are the brains and passion behind Leaning Post Wines. It started with a dream to take unique, interesting single vineyard blocks in Niagara and turn them into distinctive, terroir driven wines. Nadia and Ilya first met in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB where their passion for wine and each other was born.
Ilya has been a winemaker in the Niagara Region for the last 17 vintages working at Daniel Lenko Estate Winery, Foreign Affair and now at Leaning Post Wines. Ilya is also a consulting winemaker at the Good Earth Winery. Ilya’s true passion in life is to make world renowned wines from Niagara that really showcase the distinct terroir that Niagara offers.
