About the Winery
Mas Codina
The Mas Codina estate is located in the heart of the Alt Penedès region, comprising of low-lying plains and hills between 250 and 300 metres high.Until recently, the farm has always grown, and made a livelihood from, cereals, grapes, peaches and vegetables, as well as farm animals. Now, apart from century-old olive trees, all the land is devoted to vineyards.
Mas Codina has been in the same family for generations. They have adopted organic farming practices promoting natural processes and seeking a balanced ecosystem. All because of their love for land and tradition. There are currently 40 hectares of vineyards that are being organically farmed.

This is a quite fine, firm and elegant cava with nicely placed yellow fruit, mineral and some wet stone and light bready character. This has good character. Nicely firm and dry with a nutty, slightly bitter finish. The length is excellent. Tasted March 2022.

About the Winery
Casa Los Frailes
Casa Los Frailes is located in the valley called “land of Alforins”, south west inland province of Valencia, with average altitude of 650-700 meters above sea level. The valley is located between two mountains range, on the east the Mediterranean Sea (50km) and on the west the main “plateau” of La Mancha. Casa Los Frailes (“Cals Frares” in old valencian local language) takes their name from the Jesuit Friars that used to live in the Estate over two centuries (XVII to XVIII). The Casa Los Frailes estate now belongs to the Velázquez family and has for over 250 years, today the 13th generation runs the winery.
Frontrunners in organic agriculture and biodynamics, the estate consists of 162 hectare with vineyards, Mediterranean forest, almond and olive trees and a unique terroir. The main variety was (and still is) the Monastrell, cultivated in bush vines. "As inheritors of such legacy, we believe our wines should be part and transmit the history of our estate, as this history is obviously unique. In today's interconnected world, wines are more and more uniform, but we are committed to elaborate authentic and different wines, loyal to our personality and our history."

This is a deeply coloured blend, with a lifted, strident nose of blueberry, cassis, rosemary and some meaty character. It is notably green and almost sappy on the palate. Quite full bodied, fairly rich yet the acidity is high, as is the alcohol (14%). Tannins are well integrated and firm. The length is excellent. Very distinctive and well done. Tasted October 2019

Viñátigo
Juan Jesús is a proud native of Tenerife and the fourth generation of growers. During the thirty years that he's overseen Bodegas Viñátigo, he has considerably increased its holdings, planting varieties that he and his team recuperated from near extinction.
Driven by passion and love for his homeland, Juan decided to revive and work to save the native grape varieties that were brought to the Canary Islands by the conquers back in the 15th century and that had survived on the islands for centuries. He is a hero of contemporary Canarian viticulture. The wealth of knowledge that his work has created has helped underpin the significant expansion of wine styles that are now available throughout the archipelago, and his wines have achieved a calibre of class that many doubted the Canaries would ever produce again. From pre-phylloxera vines grown at high altitude in volcanic soils, this is a mid-weight, quite smooth red with a generous nose that reminded me of smoke and tar, with wild chokecherry, pomegranate fruit and herbs. Flavours are a bit unusual and sour-edged yet the texture and tension are smooth and appealing. Tannins are quite mild; the length is excellent. Tasted December 2020.

The volcanic midlands of Tenerife’s northwest section is THE place on the Canary Islands for growing and producing the highest quality of listán negro. The fourth and fifth generations of Juan Jesús’ family are the custodians of these pre-phylloxera vines at 500-1000m and the wines they gift. Just a kiss of oak does little to adulterate the precocious sentimentality and unknowable delight for a wine that you warm up to without knowing how or why. By now and with the 2019 vintage this unique red has come into its own at a perfect knife’s edge volatility and discreet if sumptuous behaviour. A must try and twice, each year for the next three to six. Drink 2020-2025. Tasted December 2020.

Bodegas Puiggròs
Since 1843, the Puiggros family has been producing wines from their own vines in the Odena region of Catalunya for the family and close friends. Over generations they had come to realize that their vineyards and techniques were something worth sharing with the world. A sincere dedication to the terroir in their zone and the indigenous varieties that grow there, allows them to constantly discover ways to unlock all of the magic that lies within their land.
Starting with conscious and clean farming in the vineyard, they hand-harvest only the best fruit for their production, and ferment each vineyard separately in varying vessels to accentuate what the vines have to show; some in stainless steel, and many in clay amphora of differing sizes. All the while seeing very little sulfur use (if any) until bottling. Puiggros is pushing the quality of northeastern Spain's wines forward, and doing so in a clean and unique way.

A very pretty, floral, clean and fresh example of white grenache, indeed much fresher and brighter than many in the amphora-aged genre, a future classic. I love the gentle white and yellow-fleshed fruit, the green apple freshness, the lemon blossom and meadow flowers. Acids are bright and crunchy, and 14.2% alcohol comes across as more like 12.5. The finish lingers terrifically on sapid, saline freshness. A sheer joy to drink; best now-2024. Tasted January 2021.

A warm and generous white grenache with alcohol reflecting ripeness ans style, from a family growing grapes forDrink 177 years but only producing commercially for the past dozen. In this case their local Catalonian garnatxa blanca is raised at heights (600m) on limestone and clay, then sent t0 800L sized clay amphora. Comes away clean, spirited, juicy and pure as white garnatxa driven snow. Just pink enough to vin gris it up while in delivery of the natural and curated amphora experience. Just bloody delicious. Drink 2021-2025. Tasted January 2021.

Here's a bracing yet rich wine from the volcanic Canary Islands. You can smell and taste the combo of salts and mineral here, a very different experience but so much more enjoyable than poorly sulphured wines. There is a beam of tension and character that fits and carries what is otherwise a quite rich wine. There is something like kiwi on the nose as well, plus fresh herbs/evergreen. It is medium weight, fleshy yet firm and intense with excellent length. Tasted January 2021.

A reminder of the story about listán blanco, a important grape variety brought to the Canary Islands in the 18th century by Andalusian conquerers. Suited so ideally to volcanic terroir and at 500m the verticality of “parrales” training is all about adaptation to braes over gullies. Always a white wine of confluent, inferential and influential aromatic meets mineral hyperbole. The 2020 takes over just where 2019 left off (literally speaking because I tasted the last one no less than six weeks ago). So fresh like a bite from an icicle cracker (were there such a thing) and like a mouthful of basil chiffonade. Actually, the presence of the sweet Genovese herb is uncanny but this special white wine takes it so much further. Can you imagine a mouthful of basaltic terroir. Of course you can. That and the label’s Pie Franco reference, “ungrafted rootstock often employed to designate wines made from ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines.” Mix that with volcanic terroir and fantasize about the rest. Drink 2021-2025. Tasted January 2021.

2020 marks a terrific vintage for Viñátigo's own-rooted listán blanco, vinified and aged in stainless, from the north side of Tenerife. There's a marked reductive, sulfhydric character in the best sense, where grapefruit meets smoke, onion skin meets lemon zest. The palate is distinctly saline, either from the volcanic soils, or the salt-laden Alisios winds from the North Atlantic, or both. Whatever the case, this is compelling, dense and quite concentrated white wine, with marked freshness and individual character. Lovely stuff. Tasted January 2021.

About the Winery
Pago Aylés
Pago Aylés was founded by Federico Ramón, who in 2003 began his dream of classifying this unique land as the first Vino de Pago in the Aragon region. In the Spanish wine quality pyramid, the Pago stands as a top tier or grand cru winery. Just before Federico died, his dream came true in 2010, as Aylés became the 10th Vino de Pago in Spain.
Today his three children continue to produce wines from this special land. The vineyard site has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 12th century by Spanish monks. Influenced by the River Huerva and the Monte San Pablo mountain, the soil is a mixture of clay, limestone and chalk – ideal for making high-quality wine. Caves, ravines and old river beds can be found all over the estate, which is brimming with wildlife.

A crunchy sweetly rich, ripe red fruit-dominant, velvety garnacha. Absolutely endearing with oodles of textural intrigue. A hint of saltiness balances and brings refreshment to the palate. Ready-to-drink and made in a widely appealing style.
