About the Winery
Domaine Andre Aubert
At the very heart of the Rhône Valley, at the northerly tip of the Southern Rhône, lie the vineyards of Grignan-Les-Adhémar. The chances are you haven’t heard the name before, few people have, but the wines are worth seeking out. It’s not a new wine region – vines have been planted here since around 500BC but it is a new name (formerly known as Côteaux-du-Tricastin). Domaine André Aubert, has been formed over decades and today comprises of more than 280 hectares spread from north to south of the prestigious Southern Rhone Valley on the appellations Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône villages, Visan, and Grignan-les-Adhémar.

This has a nicely generous, spicy peppery and toasty nose with classic licorice and slightly candied black cherry/plummy fruit. Syrah is taking the lead here. Nicely robust flavour intensity on the palate as well with all that spice repeating. It is medium bodied, juicy and fresh with mild, slightly gritty tannin and earthiness on the finish. Some alcohol warmth at !5%. But it is not out of balance. Very good to excellent length. Tasted August 2020.

Château de Montfaucon

Just across the Rhone river from the beautiful vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the Lirac appellation extends itself on the low hills alongside the river. The history of Château de Montfaucon dates back to the 11th century when the castle's first tower was built. The castle's role in history was strategic; the Rhône River was the border between the French Kingdom and the Holy Roman German Empire.
Montfaucon was one of a line of castles and fortresses along the Rhône River constructed to guard the border. Rodolphe de Pins takes over the family estate of Montfaucon in 1995, he rebuilds the winery and makes his first vintage. Rodolphe has a natural approach to viticulture and to winemaking; he follows the principals of sustainable agriculture, but in essence the fruit is organic agriculture.

About the Winery
Château de Parnay

Château de Parnay is the flagship of the AOC Saumur Champigny. The property is located along the Loire river, classified as UNESCO World Heritage, on the most reputable clay and limestone terroirs of the appellation. The historic property was taken over by Mathias Levron & Régis Vincenot in 2006 with the aim of restoring the nobility of this special place.
Drawing their strength from the authenticity of their values, they now cultivate 50 hectares of vines with the aim of producing exceptional wines in a way that respects the environment. They have been certified organic since 2013.
The Clos of Chemin des Murs is the jewel of the property! Coming from the imagination of it's orginal owner, Antoine Cristal, this Clos was built, planted and cultivated according to an unprecedented technique. On this half hectare of Chenin Blanc, each vine was planted on the north face of a stone wall. Through a hole in the stone the vine crosses through the wall and allowing the grapes to grow facing the southern sunshine. The vine is said to have its 'foot in the cool and belly in the sun'.

This leads with a terrific nose very much in the varietal/regional idiom, honeyed, floral, apple and lemon zest-scented, complex and exotic, not to mention stony. The palate displays a similar level of poise and composure, cool, transparent yet with a heavy freight of flavour , and terrific length. This is really quite extraordinary wine, delicious now, but surely capable of a decade or so in the cellar. Top notch. Tasted March 2019.

The rare and elusive 100 per cent chenin blanc from Samur makes full use of clay-calcaire-tuffeau soils for this dry and piqued white wine. So crunchy and expressive with an expansive character that fills the mouth by making contact withy every nerve and pour. Benchmark and controlled explosive example, rare or otherwise. Drink 2020-2025. Tasted March 2020.

It is rare to come across fine Saumur chenin, a central Loire Valley appellation overshadowed by Vouvray. This is mid-weight, dry and quite firm classic with a fairly generous nose of pear, spice, vague fresh herbs and wet stone. It becomes quite dry and somewhat grapefruity bitter on the finish, trailing solid minerality as well. Very good to excellent length. Tasted March 2020.

Château Tour de Gilet

Château Tour de Gilet is located in Ludon Médoc, 16 km north of Bordeaux in the Médoc area. The Château was built on the foundation of an ancient abbey from the 12th century. At that time the vineyard was already surrounded by “jalles” or small criss-crossing drainage canals to help produce wines of higher quality. Today, oenologist Claude Gaudin makes an extraordinary wine at this small property, using techniques such as dense planting in the vineyard and green harvesting to lower the yield, sorting at the harvest and very natural wine making for maximum expression of the fruit.

Well this is a real treat to find a fully mature, solid quality Bordeaux, authentic and gravelly, now in perfect shape. Many of these 2006s have turned out marvelously, given longevity by their freshness, and have now developed into a complex and satisfying ensemble. This is one such wine, one for the textbooks for students of Bordeaux to be sure. Tasted February 2021.

Château du Moulin Noir

This beautiful right-bank Bordeaux estate consistently produces high-value, elegant and classic Merlot dominant wines and is considered one of the most famous Château of this appellation. Located in Montagne-Saint-Emilion, Château Moulin Noir consists of seven hectares of vineyards on clay and limestone soils.
This château owes its name to a family feuddating back to the Middle Ages. Two brothers were arguing about their father’s legacy with the youngest brother being incredibly jealous that everything went to the elder. He was so jealous that he burnt the château to the ground - Moulin Noir translates to “blackened Mill”.

This notably complex right bank blend from a satellite appellation of Saint-Emilion offers appealing savory notes along with a mineral, iron component as well as licorice spice. The oak treatment is wonderfully integrated with wood spice elevating the bright red fruit. Harmoniously matured, graceful and very elegant. The staying power of the finish is impressive. An elegantly matured Bordeaux Superieur with surprising persistence. The fruit is still holding on although half dried at this point. A touch of earthiness with a hint of brett/barnyard adds intrigue to the palate. Some tannic grip remains but it is well-integrated. Acid is still fresh and gives vibrancy to the whole. Good value. About the Winery
Clos del Rey

In the foothills of the Pyrénées Mountains, not far from the Mediterranean sea, Clos del Rey is situated in the centre of almost 900 acres in the tiny village of Maury. The estate has been owned and farmed by the Montagne family since 2001. The vineyard itself is nestled among a protected area of garrigues (rosemary and thyme). The vines of up to 120 years old are allowed to grow natural and untrained, in the old-fashioned way, known as the goblet or bush style. However, it is what lies beneath the vineyard that lends much of the character and complexity found in their wines. The winery resides on an abandoned iron mine imparting red and orange hues to the soils of Clos del Rey, this Iron also adds a soft minerality and silky mouthfeel to the wines. Julien Montagne makes complex wines that truly represent his vineyards and his Catalan roots--you can almost smell the sun in the glass.

Wild blueberries and both sweet green and resinous herbs lead off on this concentrated and substantial Côtes du Roussillon red, a very typical expression yet with above average concentration and depth. Tannins are supple, ripe and velvety, acids creamy-balanced, and great length. A very satisfying mouthful of wine, for current enjoyment or short term hold. Tasted February 2021.

Soils are black schist below Maury at 200m and above the proximate limestone soil. The mix of grenache noir, carignan and syrah is quite hematic, blended into herbal tonic and this ever-present schist sensation. Like salted liquorice and a cocoa-caramel swirl. Rich and volupté in 2018, showing more wood and density. Good acid crunch creates complexity and balance in the end. Drink 2021-2024. Tasted February 2021.

The estate history dates back to 1742, but it wasn't until 1950 when René Baud, the 7th generation, rebuilt the vineyard which had suffered from the phylloxera crisis and two World Wars.
Starting with only 4 hectares, the vineyard progressively expanded to 20 hectares with the help of successive generations. Now, managed by siblings Clémentine and Bastien, the 9th generation, the estate continues to flourish and grow, with a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture and preserving the traditions and style that makes the wines of the Jura so unique and incredible.

This is a very tasty, rich, golden hued, well aged chardonnay-based sparkler with an involved nose of cashew, baked apple, nougat and honey. It is almost creamy in texture with fine mousse and very good acidity providing counterpoint. There is pleasant nutty bitterness on the finish; length is excellent.
91 Points - Michael Godel
Baud’s Crémant is made in true Blanc de Blancs style, from 100 per cent chardonnay and though faintly if beautifully oxidative, the cuvée pulses with great energy. The scents of fraying ginger batons, scraped orange skin and baking almond cookies are all a treat for the olfactory. Just enough but not too much sweetness fleshes the the body to get down to density in mouthfeel but never abandons its airy character. A terrific Champagne alternative that was disgorged in October of 2017. Drink 2018-2022. Tasted April 2018.

Today the estate is managed by siblings Clémentine and Bastien, 9th generation. This sustainably farmed chardonnay is rooted in the Jura's marl and limestone soils and was fermented in stainless before a year on lees before disgorgement and release. Green apple, white florals, oyster shells, meadow herbs, meringue run the bright, sleek palate, with a bed of creamy lees. There's a lovely streaming anise note that leads to a lengthy finish. Domaine Muré

The Muré family have been winegrowers in the region of Rouffach since 1650. In 1935, Alfred Muré, René’s grandfather, bought Clos St Landelin, a 32 acre family-monopole vineyard. Nowadays it is Alfred’s grandson René, together with his children Véronique and Thomas, the 11th and 12th generations of the family, who are responsible for running this exceptional, wholly-owned vineyard and its neighbouring terroirs, using biodynamic methods. To express the “terroir” in the wines and to preserve the heritage is the Muré family’s credo. Their wines are known for power, elegance and age worthiness.

Pierres Sèches means "dry stones" alluding to the stone wall terraces surrounding the vines in the terroir of Rouffach. Organic, 35 year-old vines and from well-draining, limestone and marl soils, helped by those dry stone walls. Actually quite unctuous pinot gris in the classic Alsace style in which some residual sugar is urged on by acidity with purposed equanimity. Begins in flinty smoulder, works through some terpenes, stone fruit and emerges into a world of candied lemon and pith. You can feel the barrel in that mild bitterness and in the creamy texture. A fulfilling wine with classicism coded in its DNA. Will transform into creme brule floating in a mineral salts bath. Drink 2021-2028. Tasted July 2020.
92 points - Sara d'Amato
An expressive and generously perfumed pinot gris. Taught but also mouth-filling with impressive viscosity in part due to a well-balanced degree of residual sugar. The acidity makes the wine feels svelt when it actually has lovely curves. Dynamic on the palate. Oily, mineral, fresh and lush all at once - the juxtapositions are delicious. Organically produced. Tasted September 2020.
91 points - David Lawrason
The hot vintage has created a very ripe, deeply coloured style of pinot gris with almost raisined fruit, orange/apricot fruit, almond and linden florality and perfume. It is medium-full bodied, fairly firm and in the end dry. The length is very good with an orange pekoe tea finish. The length is excellent.
91 points - John Szabo
In the open and loose, oxidative Mure house style, this is a ripe and fleshy, slightly off-dry pinot gris with fine balance provided by both acids and a pleasant touch of varietal bitterness, not to mention a pinch of salt on the finish that encourages additional sips. Length and depth are excellent. Lots of character on offer, and a perfect foil for that gently spicy south Asian cuisine with its own measure of fat and sweetness. Tasted September 2020.

Pure and bold notes of freshly cut russet-pear peel fill the nose on this wine. The palate adds flowing pear juiciness and concentration. Bold fruitiness is held in check by pithy, not quite zesty freshness. This wine has drive and energy, with a just off-dry finish.

Oily, mineral and offering great intensity - an unusually characterful sylvaner that should be a hit with Alsatian wine fanatics. Transparent, dry, vinous and notable complex. Stoney and refreshing with hints of dried herbal and a great deal of citrus. Mouth-filling with petrol and wet stone lingering on the finish of excellent length. Tasted September 2020.

Sylvaner is not the showiest of varieties in Alsace but it has an almost riesling-like acid grip that makes it a very food friendly choice. This shows generous lychee, vaguely garlicked and perfumed saffron aromas. Intriguing. It is medium bodied, fairly firm and dry with a lemony and nutty finish. The length is excellent.

Very pale, crystal-clear straw-green. Delicate aromas and flavors of quince, green apple and minerals. Finishes long and clean with refined perfume. The name Originel refers to “in the beginning” because in the 1960s and 1970s, Sylvaner was the donminant grape variety in the valley (the Zinnkoepflé Grand Cru, for example, was almost entirely planted to Sylvaner and Gewürz). Lovely, above-average aperitif wine here; or try it with shellfish and asparagus dishes.

Maison Idiart

Maison Idiart is a wine négociant based in Bordeaux and established in 2013. Nicolas Idiart, winemaker and founder of Maison Idiart, grew up with a passion for wine, something that he shared with his father and grandfather.
He graduated from Bordeaux winemaking school in Blanquefort at 19 years old. Nicolas' love for Loire wines took him to work in Chinon, Touraine and Muscadet. He also had experiences in Australia and New Zealand. After several years travelling the world, he decided to shift his work in the industry and work in sales, focusing in North America.
At 33 years old, after 7 years working in sales, he decided to go back to winemaking with an artisan approach, making small batches of handcrafted wines.

More than merely classic Provençal Rosé in that Idiart’s adds another level of depth and complexity to the pale, salty and sapid style. There’s a Mediterranean brushy feel as well, a dried herb, mountain hillside tea and garrigue emission. Crisp and earthy, crunchy and laden with orange-ginger-lemon tisane. BBQ ready. Crushable too. Nicolas trained abroad and returned home in 1996, hoping to build a négociant business and that was the start of Maison Nicolas Potel. Potel began sourcing grapes from good parcels, often working with the growers to improve quality. By 2002, he was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations.
Today he runs Maison Roche de Bellene, a micro-négoce that offers a complete range of wines, with an emphasis on individual terroirs from vieilles vignes (old vines - 40 years or older) that are farmed responsibly. All of the growers that Nicolas works with are either organic certified or farming according to the principles of lutte raisonée (sustainable viticulture). This enables Nicolas to consistently produce the expressive, terroir-driven style that is his vision. In addition he owns his own vineyards and bottles these wines under the label Domaine de Bellene. From 50 year old vines in ultra-high density planting (11,000 vines/hectare, according to Nicolas Potel, the nose is exceptionally pretty, ripe but fresh, exuding red berry-cherry fruit in a sophisticated and refined fashion. I love the touch of licorice, the gentle leafy-stemminess, the delicate wood spice, and the overall complexity. The palate is saturated with flavour - this is a genuine mouthful, dripping with ripe fruit but also contained by abundant, ripe acids. Tannins are ultra-fine but structured and the length is superb. Top notch; Best after 2027. Tasted September 2019.

Les Chabiots is expressed in the highest of tones for Chambolle and while the vintage was generous, easy and warm you should not be fooled into thinking that a dance of movement or development will initiate or ignite any time soon. Greatest of fine tannins and intensity of its own and singular commentary make for a very special wine. Drink 2022-2036. Tasted September 2019.

Do not adjust your set. The vintage brought everything to the table and while the foreground presents a picture crystalline and transparent the entirety of the frame is frozen clear. As for the aromatics this teases a meaty cure like few other and teases as if by the ambience of a cave, restricted of access, hiding what lurks, hangs and excites. Crunchy to say the least, layered to say more and complex to speak the ultimate truth. Magnifique and still twenty years away from the beginning of the end. Drink 2022-2037. Tasted September 2019.

As always with a grand cru from Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine shows immense power. It is dominated by black fruits as well as signs of the 60% wood aging. Behind, the red cherry fruits are developing along with the lively acidity. It needs to age and should not be drunk before 2019

Stéphane Aviron

Stéphane Aviron can be considered a pioneer in his approach to winemaking in Beaujolais, however he would just tell you that he’s simply returning to the traditional practices that have always made fantastic Gamay wines. Sustainable viticulture, extremely old vines and classic Burgundian techniques. He focuses on the Beaujolais village crus, all but forgotten gems of vineyards when the nouveau craze took over, which are the best sites for unique, expressive and terroir driven wines. All of the fruit is sourced from old vines (40+ years), so seeing Vieilles Vignes on the label is a rite of passage, not a privilege. Authenticity and a distinctly Beaujolais style of winemaking is what sets Stéphane apart from the rest.

Aviron’s ’18 Villages is gamay off of 50-plus year old vines in the lieu-dit of Les Monthieux, located in the commune of Lantignie, much considered the least of shrinking violet Beaujolais villages. The vine wisdom and point of fact location surely tumbles tenets of concentration and complexity tilted in a cru/lieu-dit direction. Priced at the confluence of upper end of “commercial” Villages production and lower end Cru pricing for an all in all terrific buy in Beaujolais gamay. One of darkening red to black cherry fruit, crisp acidity and a blanket of wet, aromatic earth and stone. Drink 2021-2024. Tasted January 2021.

Classic Beaujolais here from Aviron, ripe per the vintage conditions, sweet-fruited, dark and floral, plush and concentrated at the villages level to be sure. There's a generosity and a sucrosity here that's not common in wines from the region, or at least wasn't until the recent string of warm vintages. In any case, this should win back disgruntled former Beaujolais drinkers, and win over new ones with its open arms and gentle caress. Tasted January 2021.

Domaine Frédéric Brouca

Frédéric grew up in Normandy and met his Canadian wife Elaine at university in Lille, Northern France. They live a nomadic lifestyle (Canada, India, Singapore and USA) though Frédéric spends about half of his time in Faugères. Since early age, Frédéric had a calling for farming and the fierce desire to become a winegrower. After completing a Masters Degree in Finance in 2001, Frédéric went back to college for a Sommelier diploma and started his career as a Burgundy wine broker.
In late 2012, Frédéric and Elaine were fortunate to take over 25 acres of old vines in Faugères, organically farmed for twenty years and deeply rooted in schist soils.
2013 was the inaugural vintage for Domaine Frédéric Brouca. In his modest winery in the village of Laurens, Frédéric is creating a new vision for Faugères wines; fresh, vibrant and made without artifice. Nothing revolutionary, simply returning to our grandparent's ideology of farming and winemaking to craft 'Vins Vivants'. The Faugères Appellation is in the heart of Languedoc in the Hérault department. Here, winemaking dates back to the Greek times and was developed during the Roman Era. It wasn't until the early 1900's, however, that the wines became more widely known for its unique schist soils and moderate Mediterranean climate. These villages are heavily reliant on wine as an important part of their culture and economy.
The area is stunning with mountain views and close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea (20 miles / 30 kms). Faugères has a long history of responsible farming. It boasts the highest percentage of organic vineyards for any AOC in all of France with almost 50% of farmers making the choice.

La Sorga

Born in Foix, Ariège, a small town in the Pyrénées, Anthony Tortul founded La Sorga in 2008. Originally aiming to produce a range of natural white wines from the finest vineyards in the Languedoc, he visited organic and biodynamic vineyards all over the region. However, the more he saw, the more he fell in love, and soon he was committed to making reds, whites, pink bubbles and sometimes, late-harvest wines.
Currently, Anthony Tortul works with nine vineyards that are spread throughout Aude and Herault, totaling 25ha. The soils here are as varied as the geology, including calcareous clay, shale, basalt, sand and granite, as is the climate, which ranges from hot and Mediterranean to mountainous and hilly. Planted to more than 20 varieties, including Terret Blanc and Gris, Cinsault, Grenache, Aramon, Carignan, Aubun, Mauzac, Vermentino, Ugni Blanc, Sauvignon, Mourvèdre and more, the vines are grown organically (with 50% farmed biodynamically), and attended to by Anthony. “I love vineyards, especially very old vineyards,” he says, “that’s why I work with a lot of little fields with a lot of old varieties.”
Manually harvesting his fruit into 15kg boxes, Tortul works with whole bunches and does not control the temperatures of his fermentations, all of which are done separately before blending. Working with vines that are at least 50-years-old and up to 110-years-old, Anthony’s yields are very concentrated (15-23 hl/ha in very generous years!), and require long aging in the tank. A benchmark producer in the Natural Wine world, La Sorga wines are made with absolutely zero additions.
