Rich & Luxurious

Nicolas Potel is an iconic producer in Burgundy. He grew up in a family dedicated entirely to wine; and after gaining some experience internationally, he started his own project in the late 90's.

As well as running his own wine property Domaine de Bellene and negociant company Maison Roche de Bellene, the ever resourceful Nicolas Potel has made a speciality out of sourcing parcels of older Burgundy wines from capable producers who have squirrelled away various gems from their best vineyards. Nicolas has got to know almost everybody in Burgundy during his twenty-five years of making wine.

The Collection Bellenum wines have moved only twice in their lives, from the original cellar to Potel's and now to yours!

I'd say they magnificently reflect the reality of Burgundy in that they are very varied, provide a thoroughly useful overview of how different vintages are developing, and include some completely stunning wines that are not Grands Crus, not even Premiers Crus but are simple village wines. - Jancis Robinson.

Meursault is the largest village of the Côte de Beaune, with a history of winegrowing that dates back to the Romans. It is known for producing white wines that are softer and richer than the neighbouring villages of Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet. Its aromatic power and exceptional balance between fat and acidity make it an aristocrat among burgundies.

About the Winery

Groupe Bellene

Led by Nicolas Potel in Beaune, Groupe Bellene is composed of the négociant arm Maison Roche de Bellene, the winery arm Domaine de Bellene, and a special back-vintage series under the Collection Bellenum label.

  • Maison Roche de Bellene offers a complete range of wines, with an emphasis on individual terroirs from old vines of more than 40 years. All of the growers that Nicolas works with are either organic certified or sustainably farmed.
  • Domaine de Bellene represents the wines that are produced and bottled from Nicolas Potel's private vineyard holdings.
  • Collection Bellenum is a back vintage series that Nicolas Potel sourced from his friends in the region, offering a magnificent selection of bottled history. The wines have moved only twice in their lives, from the original cellar to Potel's and now to yours!

Nicolas Potel grew up at Volnay's Domaine Pousse d'Or, where his father worked. He trained abroad and returned home in 1996 to build a négociant business and started Maison Nicolas Potel, where he sourced grapes from good parcels, often working with the growers to improve the quality. By 2002, he was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations, and the rest is history!

Wine Align - Michael Godel

More than a feeling, rouse of emotion and wonderment unavoidable when a glass of 2007 Meursault is poured. Only Nicolas Potel the wonder boy négociant can pull or chooses to extoll these virtues of Bourgogne age as if they are something completely new. The fact is 2007 Meursault will advance with some haste and this example backs that up. Lovely oxidation, mild white caramelization and dried flower bouquet mark the entirety of this ’07’s entry. Wake up and live factor still runs high in a Bourgogne of still pulsing acids though fruit has definitely bobbed and crossed over to the other side. Hanging on just ever so slightly but “life is one big road with lots of signs, so when you riding through the ruts, don't you complicate your mind.” Drink up. Drink 2021-2022. Tasted December 2021.
