The Cortonesi family has owned the La Mannella farm in Montalcino for decades and are devoted to the production of Brunello di Montalcino. Marco Cortonesi started making wine in 1990 from his family’s vineyards. He now runs the estate with his son Tommaso.

While Cortonesi's main holdings are in the north of Montalcino, the estate’s Poggiarelli site is located in the southeast. It sits between 420 to 450 metres on Galestro, or marl-rich rocky soil. Faint aromas of cinnamon and clove resound on the palate where they are joined by brambly black currants and smoky flint nuances.

If you ever wanted a Brunello di Montalcino for your cellar to age for decades, then buy the 2016 vintage. This vintage marks the second great year in a row for Brunello di Montalcino and can easily be described as one of the best vintages ever!

We recommend to pair this Brunello with bold meals: oxtail, a beautiful steak, rich stews or game paired with mushroom sauces. The spicy aromas of the wine will enhance the flavours of the food.

About the Winery


The “La Mannella” farm, owned by the Cortonesi family, covers a surface of 56 hectares (138 acres), eight (19 acres) of which are especially devoted to the production of “Brunello di Montalcino”. Its wine-making activity started at the beginning of the seventies, and its vineyards are placed in one of the most valuable areas of the region, both north and south-east from Montalcino.

The Cortonesi family has been making wine since the 1970’s however at the time the wine was simply for family, friends and neighbours enjoyment. In 1985 they began to offer their wines commercially. It is strictly a family business, and works according to tradition, while also employing modern technologies that help to the enhance the quality of the wines made.

Tommaso, in his early 30s, is the third-generation winemaker at the winery that was started by his grandfather. The favorable location of its vineyards, and the rocky soil where they are planted, all contribute to the making of a deep and elegant Brunello. Tomasso says “I’m a lucky man who has been given the opportunity to realize my dream and continue my family’s efforts making wine in the land where I was born.”

A Brunello of great personality. Multifaceted nose with hints of vanilla, blackberry jam and rose hip. Iodized mouth, savoury and crunchy tannins. Final floral and fruity return.

The Cortonesi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli draws its fruit from a vineyard planted in the 1970s and replanted in part during the 1990s. Its fruit has made this designate wine since 1998, and like many of the Selezioni (and the Brunello cru expressions), this wine shows a pretty mineral character that lifts above the bright red fruit. It's absolutely true that these special sections from Montalcino are always recognized by their terrain or soil-adjacent aromas. In this case, I can smell those inty or gravel-like tones from the schistous Galestro rocks. That special aromatic signature is followed by dark fruit and balsam herb, rm tannins and bright acidity. This is a limited 4,000-bottle release.
