The Canary Islands are a hidden and forgotten archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Morocco. Viñátigo has been recuperating native grape varieties in the Canary Islands since 1990. After several years learning about each grape making single varietal wines, the winery has embarked on exploring the volcanic identity of the North-West of Tenerife through a limited series of signature wines.

This Mixed Case explores these wines:

1 bottle x Viñátigo Ensamblaje Blanco 2021 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
White | Listan Blanco, Marmajuelo, Gual, Vijariego Blanco

This is a blend of native white varieties from the Canary Islands. Depending on the conditions vintage the proportions and grapes blended in this wine will vary. The grapes are harvested and vinified separetely. Some of them, such as Marmajuelo or Gual, grow near the Ocean and are normally harvested in early August. Vijariego Blanco is cultivated at much higher altitude, and it is not picked until late October. Once all varieties are fermented and aged independently, the Ensamblaje is blended. This white blend is extremely aromatic, when aromas of honey and tropical fruits, such as apricot. On the palate it has a vibrant acidity and an incredible volcanic minerality. The taste adds dramatic lime, honeysuckle, banana and guava.

Pairing suggestion: Perfect when paired with fresh fish dishes such as ceviche or seafood.

1 bottle x Viñátigo Vino de Parcela Maipe Macizo de Anaga-Taganana 2021 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
White | Listan Blanco

Maipe is a vineyard located in Taganana: a tiny village located in the Anaga Massif, in the North-east of Tenerife. The vines were planted ungrafted more than 120 years ago. In the early 1900's, the landslide of one of the mountains of the Monte de Las Vueltas buried the vineyard. Over the last 100 years, the vines have unburied themselves, creating a unique viticultural landscape; a sign of a heroic viticulture.

Both on the nose and the palate, the wine shows a special complexity. On the nose, it is reminiscent of a warm and dry summer vintage, with aromas of orange peel, thyme, fennel, honeysuckle and sous-bois. On the palate it is dense and ample, due to the ageing over its lees, with no stirring. Maipe has tension, structure and balance on the palate thanks to its natural acidity.

1 bottle x Viñátigo Baboso Negro 2020 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
Red | Baboso Negro

Baboso Negro is a grape variety that Juan Jesus found in the island of El Hierro in the early 2000's. He recuperated it with a micro-winery he established on the island, and in 2006, he planted a small plot in Tenerife. The Baboso Negro's clusters are very small and delicate, but yield very complex and full-bodied wines. On the nose, Baboso Negro develops aromas of delicate violet flowers, dark chocolate and balsamic notes. On the palate, it has a big and bold structure.

Pairing suggestion: Pair with big meals: steaks, coq au vin, boeuf bourguignon...

1 bottle x Viñátigo Ensamblaje Tinto 2019 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
Red | Listan Negro, Negramoll, Vijariego Negro, Baboso Negro

By blending different red grape varieties, Viñátigo's goal with their Ensamblaje red is to showcase the volcanic minerality of the northwest of Tenerife. Depending on the conditions of the vintage, the proportions and grapes blended in this wine may vary. The grapes are harvested and vinified separetely. The Ensamblaje Tinto has a spicy, firey nose with strong pepper, forest mushroom and jam. On the palate it is big and muscular with firm tannins that allow the ground fruit notes to really show themselves.

Pairing suggestion: Beautiful when paired with earthy dishes such as mushroom risotto, and meats.

1 bottle x Viñátigo Elaboraciones Ancestrales Tinto 2019 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
Red | Tintilla, Baboso Negro

Baboso Negro is a grape variety that Juan Jesus found in the island of El HiThe Elaboraciones Ancestrales collection aims to bring back ancient winemaking techniques. For this red wine, two different grape varieties–Baboso Negro and Tintilla–from two different volcanic terroirs of the Northwest of Tenerife come together in a delicate yet full-bodied wine. Each variety is fermented separately with whole-cluster  (including the stems) in a big open wooden vat, with occasional punch-downs. Once fermentations are completed, the two grapes are pressed individually, and then blended and aged in the same wooden vat. This is a big and quite remarkable wine has aromas of black cherries and plums, tobacco, rosewood, toffee, cedar and touches of salty caramel and woodsmoke.

On the palate has a subtle power, concentration and longevity. This red ends up with a long lasting length and a mineral and salty tang.rro in the early 2000's.

1 bottle x Viñátigo Malvasia Aromatica Clasico 2009 (Tenerife, Canary Islands)
Sweet | Malvasia Aromatica

This sweet wine is Viñátigo's homage to what the Canary Island Wines once were: the most appreciated wine in the world. Have a look at some of Shakespeare's lines in Henry VI: "But, i' faith, you have drunk too much canaries, and that’s a marvellous searching wine, and it perfumes the blood ere one can say “What’s this?” How do you now?"

The Malvasia vines grow near the Ocean, in very mild weather conditions with an important marine influence. This is a late harvest wine. The sweetness of the wine comes from the natural sugar of the grapes. It is aged for a year on its fine lees in French oak barrels. On the nose, it has aromas of bitter orange peel, rose petals, dried apricots and almonds. It has beautiful notes of jasmine and other white flowers and an unwavering acidity and roundness on the palate.

Pairing suggestion: Perfect to pair with cheese boards, foie-gras and desserts.

About the Winery

Viñátigo

Juan Jesús is a proud native of Tenerife and the fourth generation of growers. During the thirty years that he's overseen Bodegas Viñátigo, he has considerably increased its holdings, planting varieties that he and his team recuperated from near extinction.

Driven by passion and love for his homeland, Juan decided to revive and work to save the native grape varieties that were brought to the Canary Islands by the conquers back in the 15th century and that had survived on the islands for centuries. He is a hero of contemporary Canarian viticulture. The wealth of knowledge that his work has created has helped underpin the significant expansion of wine styles that are now available throughout the archipelago, and his wines have achieved a calibre of class that many doubted the Canaries would ever produce again.
