It's beyond impressive that a wine sourced from 50 vineyards scattered throughout the state can be this good. It's all of Oregon in a single bottle, rounded in feel, lightly spiced and showing fresh cranberry and cherry flavors.

Groupe Bellene

Nicolas trained abroad and returned home in 1996, hoping to build a négociant business and that was the start of Maison Nicolas Potel. Potel began sourcing grapes from good parcels, often working with the growers to improve quality. By 2002, he was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations.
Today he runs Maison Roche de Bellene, a micro-négoce that offers a complete range of wines, with an emphasis on individual terroirs from vieilles vignes (old vines - 40 years or older) that are farmed responsibly. All of the growers that Nicolas works with are either organic certified or farming according to the principles of lutte raisonée (sustainable viticulture). This enables Nicolas to consistently produce the expressive, terroir-driven style that is his vision. In addition he owns his own vineyards and bottles these wines under the label Domaine de Bellene. You can also find some special back vintage offerings that Nicolas has sourced from his friends in region, this is labelled under Collection Bellenum.

Nicolas Potel’s access to pinot noir vineyards 35, 50, 60 and even 80 years of age makes for fruit and experience that are virtually unparalleld in Bouroogne AOC. Cuvée Réserve offers fine perennial drinking with medium-bodied concentration and texture thanks to high density plantings on limestone and marl. Big (600L) barrels do the yeoman work to solidify and qualify this pinot noir as the real and authentic deal regardless of quantities and négoce hi-jinx. It’s all just fun and games with a gift of Bourgogne at a more than fair price. Drink 2021-2025. Tasted April 2021.

Zuani

Zuani winery is located in the heart of Collio, Friuli, a hidden appellation between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. Coming from a long tradition of winemakers in Croatia that goes back to the 19th century, Patrizia Felluga saw her dream come true when she acquired the estate and the vineyards in 2001. Today, her son and daughter have taken over the winery; producing exclusively white wines. Everything hinges on one exceptionally well exposed “cru”, or vineyard, on a gentle hillside where about eleven acres of vines and gardens surround the Zuani cellar.
The varietals planted are Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon, a carefully chosen range that produced the first vintage of Zuani Collio Bianco. The Zuani winery embodies the Felluga family winemaking heritage and expresses the fundamental unity of the traditional aspects of Friulian varieties with their more modern side.

Delicately scented, this has soft aromas of white spring flowers, white stone fruit and botanical herb. Vibrant and elegant, the racy palate offers peach, Meyer lemon and ripe pear alongside crisp acidity before a tangy mineral close. Editors' Choice.

This is a very fine white blend from one of my favourite white wine regions in the world. This combines serious complexity and intrigue with a freshness and delicacy against all odds. Expect well woven aromas of apricot, lemon, mustard seed, florals, light toast (but no oak) and a certain waxiness. It is light to medium bodied, with fine acidity, minerality and a touch of CO2 spritz. Flavours have excellent intensity and length that dovetail with the warmth and acidity. Slightly pithy grapefruit and a salty tang on the finish. The length is excellent to outstanding. Tasted April 2021

Azienda Agricola Tornatore

Out of a Sicilian family heritage that traces back to the 17th century, the Tornatore’s Mount Etna wine ventures began in 1865. Today the family’s operations are headed by Giuseppe Tornatore, a businessman whose expertise led to the acquisition of some of the region’s finest north-facing vineyards in the early 2000’s. That heritage and the Tornatore’s profound respect and understanding of the land is showcased in wines that capture the essence of Etna, deftly balancing concentrated flavors, complexity, freshness and refinement.
The company lies in the northern side of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. The soils have volcanic origin and were created through the disintegration of lava, ash and stones from previous volcanic eruptions. The climate on the northern side of the Etna is characterized by mild temperatures, and more rain fall reflecting the influence of the Volcano. The combination of soil, climate and the skill of the winemakers, have made the northern slope of Etna an ideal area for the production of high-quality wines. “Our vineyards and our winery are only a few kilometers from our family home. Our entire family is rooted there. We have the greatest respect for this region, and we believe we have a responsibility to be stewards of Etna and to reflect its distinct character in our wines.” - Giuseppe Tornatore

Aromas of wild red berries, violet, Mediterranean herbs and eucalyptus mingle together with exotic spice and smoky graphite on this gorgeous, fragrant red, made with 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio. The elegant palate has great tension and finesse, doling out raspberry compote, ripe blackberry, licorice and a hint of almond before an orange zest finish. It's superbly balanced, with taut, silky tannins and fresh acidity. Drink through 2029.

The 2018 ‘Per Aspera’ Chablis begins with aromas of sliced apples, tangerine blossoms and lemon, which are laced with white flowers and hints of crushed stones. The palate is beautifully textured with a soft mouthfeel that is underlined by a lovey combination of minerality and bright acidity which provides wonderful freshness through the finish. This is drinking beautifully today and should also offer a drinking window that span nearly a decade.

Sister's Run

Sister’s Run is serious fun. Their talented young winemaker Elena wears steel cap work boots every day of course, but carries a pair of high heels in back of the ute, only for emergencies, like last minute invitations to accept trophies at gala wine show dinners and the like.
Returning from a ‘knees-up’ at midnight, mid vintage, she managed to kick off one high heel and slip back into a boot’ just as the cellar crew cried out, ‘Run Sister Run’; and exactly then their winemaker and label took flight!
The stiletto and boot are Sister’s Run; an independently owned and operated winery with a fierce commitment to making the best wines they can from family vineyards. They don’t take ourselves as seriously as we take our wines, but agree with Elena, all you need to know about wine is the five ‘V’s and remember the best wine is the wine you like.

Do not adjust your set. The vintage brought everything to the table and while the foreground presents a picture crystalline and transparent the entirety of the frame is frozen clear. As for the aromatics this teases a meaty cure like few other and teases as if by the ambience of a cave, restricted of access, hiding what lurks, hangs and excites. Crunchy to say the least, layered to say more and complex to speak the ultimate truth. Magnifique and still twenty years away from the beginning of the end. Drink 2022-2037. Tasted September 2019.

As always with a grand cru from Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine shows immense power. It is dominated by black fruits as well as signs of the 60% wood aging. Behind, the red cherry fruits are developing along with the lively acidity. It needs to age and should not be drunk before 2019

Cool, clean, classy, lemon custard and yoghurt-scented, vibrant and lively chardonnay here from Rex Hill, a really nicely composed blend of multiple vineyards and soil types from throughout the Willamette Valley. Young and toasty, this barrel-fermented gem is still pulling itself together. The structure is there for aging over the next half-decade or longer, and the lightly tropical melon and papaya flavors are lovely. It just needs to balance out the barrel flavors a bit, but if you love a toasty Chardonnay, there's no need to wait.

Radford Dale

Alex Dale who owns and manages both projects is an Englishman who grew up spending summers in Burgundy, France. He moved there in his late teens to follow a passion for winemaking and also opened a wine bar in Beaune. He lived in Burgundy for many years before moving to South Africa in 1998, starting Radford Dale with Ben Radford, an Australian. The idea was to produce wines using modern techniques and technology with a healthy respect for tradition, something Alex came to understand well while living in Burgundy.

With his background in Burgundy, Alex Dale has always known how to make good Chardonnay. This lightly wooded example, bottled under screwcap, has some peachy aromatics, but is driven by lemony acidity. Downy lees and some toasty spice complete the palate.

Never ever underestimate wines made from fruit grown anywhere in the vicinity of the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. Radford Dale is a custodian of such land and winemaker Jacques de Klerk feels every grape, vine and vessel holding this sacred Western Cape fruit with every fibre of his Afrikaans being. The reductive intensity and locked in freshness of this chardonnay brings white pepper and wet granite stone to the fore; then the palate goes all gelid lemon and nectarine granita. Finally there is a biscuit not buttered but mildly truffled you can’t resist. Chenin? Well yes, but chardonnay! Drink 2020-2025. Tasted October 2020.

There is nothing regular about the “regular” Tantalus Riesling, and judging by the rush to southeast Kelowna to grow Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, the terroir is equally compelling. The purity of fruit is the Tantalus signature, and you get that and more in this 2018, a vintage that started slow and slowed down under a haze of summer smoke before harvest. The wine is bright, clean and refreshing with signature aromas of tangerines, lime leaf, and flowers that spill across its stony, mineral palate, flecked with kiwi and starfruit. Just a baby, you can drink it now or hold it a decade.

Cortonesi

The Cortonesi family has been making wine since the 1970’s however at the time the wine was simply for family, friends and neighbours enjoyment. In 1985 they began to offer their wines commercially. It is strictly a family business, and works according to tradition, while also employing modern technologies that help to the enhance the quality of the wines made. Tommaso, in his early 30s, is the third-generation winemaker at the winery that was started by his grandfather. The favorable location of its vineyards, and the rocky soil where they are planted, all contribute to the making of a deep and elegant Brunello. Tomasso says “I’m a lucky man who has been given the opportunity to realize my dream and continue my family’s efforts making wine in the land where I was born.”

La Mannella Riserva '12 is composed of grapes taken from the oldest vines though by a predetermined decision communicated to the consorzio one year before release, whether it turns out to be a vintage from which a Riserva is made or not. This is an essential rule that prohibits producers from not giving a wine an identity. Riserva is a completely different wine than the Annata, as always with more mature notes though here in salumi hyperbole, long aging oak spice and fruit elongation. Cortonesi's spent four years in large Slavonian oak barrels and at this five point five year mark it turns to wild strawberry, chocolate and cocoa. It's both elegant and taut while just now beginning to stretch its legs. Even if you can't quite imagine or envision what will be, there has to be some level of blind-spotting or just plain denial to not see this is as pure magic. Drink 2022-2034. Tasted March 2018.

This is classy chardonnay from Jak Meyer; whose wines have been turning heads for quite a few years now, especially those of the judges at the WineAlign National Wine Awards. The 2018 McLean Creek bottling from Okanagan Falls is beautifully bright and appealingly spartan, with minimal oak and lees influence in favour of sharp citrus, peach stones and apple blossom flavours in a genuine cool climate idiom. But it's really the palate that shines with its taut acids and laser sharp delineation, not to mention the impressively lingering finish. Top notch, and top value, classy wine. Drink or hold into the mid-late-'20s.

So antithetical and apposite to Gordon A. Smith again and consistently so. Once again it is sun and the soaking up of that warmth that brings luxe, calme et volupté with a side salad of crunchy bits from the sand and gravel in Okanagan Falls loams at (320-380m) of altitude. If surprise was the order in 2017 then further awe comes from 2018 with a side dish of wonder. This is fascinating chardonnay with a tincture running through like grated tuber juice as if by ginger, turmeric, lotus and taro. Drink 2021-2027. Tasted April 2020.

This is from Meyer's Old Main Road vineyard in Naramata. Each year the Tribute Chardonnay honours a Canadian cultural figure, in 2018 modernist painter Gordon Applebe Smith. The Old Main chardonnay always strikes a riper, richer note and no change here even in the cooler vintage. The nose billows with ripe peach fruit, peat, spice and vanilla from French oak. It has sense of fullness but the 2018 acidity runs neatly through to the end. Excellent length. Score - 93.
