A hint of pink in the colour. Sweet cherry, herbal and savoury aromas, some liquorice. On the palate the wine is dense, juicy and fresh, with aromas coherent with the fragrance, very well balanced, fruity in the finish, with a clear tactile mineral background. Convincing style, very good extract.

The very young 2022 Vino de Viñedo Los Compadres Cabernet Sauvignon, which has a majority of grapes from a vineyard they finally purchased in Coronel de Maule that has 60-year-old head-pruned, dry-farmed and ungrafted Cabernet Sauvignon, a rarity for the variety, because it was grafted onto 100-year-old País vines. It has 13.8% alcohol with a pH of 3.35, which is extremely low, and very high acidity, 7.12. They used 15% new oak, and part of the wine fermented in barrel. It has the structured tannins from Maule but with amazing tension, lots of fruit, some notes of tobacco and tea leaves, textbook blackcurrant and with balsamic and minty, subtle, juicy, very good complexity, harmony and elegance with grip, serious and a little à la Saint-Estéphe. 17,000 bottles produced. A single-plot selection of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coronel de Maule Vineyard will be released later, as it's not yet bottled.

From the secano interior dry farming region in Maule was made with grapes from 80-year-old Pais vines grafted with Cabernet and aged for 10 months in 20% new oak. Purple with a ruby sheen. The expressive nose offers fresh black currant and plum plus hints of spice, gentle notes from the aging process, cigar box and hints of violet. In the mouth, it is delicate and energetic with refined tannins and precise, characterful grip. The juicy, rich flavours are shored up by the freshness. A nuanced, energetic wine. Complexity and lots of stamina and verve here! Smoky lemons, nougat, ginger and flint provide a very flavourful palate. Intense and substantial on the palate, but still elegant and nuanced, with a hint of phenolics at the end. Long, focused finish. Think fine Meursault. Drink or hold.
Robert Parker
95 Points - Luis Gutiérrez
The 2020 Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay was cropped from a warm and dry vintage, but in Traiguén in the south, it is not as warm as in the central valley of Chile. The grapes were harvested the first half of April; they harvested earlier and finished with more alcohol, still a moderate 13.5%, from a year of more body and rounder wines but without heat. The wine kept a pH of 3.16 and 6.9 grams of acidity. This also makes the wine a little more Burgundian, more Meursault than Chablis or Puligny, tasty, spicy with a tad more oak (all the new barrels for white are 400-liter ones, 38% of them new in 2020), because in warmer years there is a little more extraction from the oak. This is the warmest vintage so far, but the wine is still bone dry and there is no ripeness; but there's more weight and width. The wines have to show the differences of the climate conditions each year... 4,069 bottles were filled in July 2021.

The 2021 Vino de Viñedo Los Parientes Pinot Noir was produced with some 10% full clusters and indigenous yeasts followed by nine months in barrel, 13% of them new 300-liter oak barrels and the rest used 228-liter ones. It has 13.5% alcohol and is direct, aromatic, with red fruit and notes of rosehip. The colour and the nose keep the youth and primary aromas but with good ripeness and development of flavours; there's nothing herbal or green about it. 13,416 bottles were filled in December 2021.

There is a melted chocolate-crust character that binds well with the wild strawberries, plums, roses, wild herbs, white pepper and stemmy accents. This is bright and muscular, charged with seamless tannins. Very unique and powerful pinot, but juicy and caressing, too. Drink after 2024.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Vino de Viñedo Los Parientes from Malleco, Traiguén, was aged for 9 months in 13% new barrels. Intense purple in the glass. The clear, full, alluring aromas include sweetbriar, red fruit, sour cherry, elderberry and hints of earth and mushrooms. Fluid with a terse texture, fine-grained tannins that keep things compact, and a little grip; the base is formed by the elegant freshness before the lengthy finish and elderberry aftertaste. A pure, delicate wine.

2022 was a milder year, and the 2022 Vino de Viñedo Los Parientes Pinot Noir shows quite similar to the 2021 (there are more noticeable differences in the white); the parameters are similar (and so was the enology, with 10% full clusters, indigenous fermentation and small percentage of new barrels with a little less time in barrel, eight months here). Perhaps there is an earthier touch here; there's more finesse in the 2021 and a little more rusticity in this 2022. It's very open in the nose and very attractive, with fine tannins and nice balance. 8,539 bottles were filled in November 2022.

Sister's Run
Sister’s Run is serious fun. Their talented young winemaker Elena wears steel cap work boots every day of course, but carries a pair of high heels in back of the ute, only for emergencies, like last minute invitations to accept trophies at gala wine show dinners and the like.
Returning from a ‘knees-up’ at midnight, mid vintage, she managed to kick off one high heel and slip back into a boot’ just as the cellar crew cried out, ‘Run Sister Run’; and exactly then their winemaker and label took flight!
The stiletto and boot are Sister’s Run; an independently owned and operated winery with a fierce commitment to making the best wines they can from family vineyards. Great Heart is a brand wholly owned by employees who work for the Mullineux and Leeu families - leading producers in the Swartland region. A joint venture benefitting the winery employees of the Mullineux and Leeu Family Wines, this project is aimed at improving the livelihood of the staff and their families through the profits generated by Great Heart sales. The label features a Cape Wagtail bird that bears a marking that resembles a heart on its chest plumage and is known for its acts of selflessness and courage in assisting others in South African folklore. Great Heart's red blend is typically led by syrah and this incarnation is notably expressive of the grape's peppery and generous nature. Full-bodied but not heavy, this engaging blend features delicate oak and fruit-derived spice, an abundance of black fruit and no shortage of personality. Lithe tannins, an undercurrent of freshness make for a gratifying textural experience. Excellent length. Best now to 2026. T

Rasteau within the larger appellation that is Côtes du Rhône Villages makes full and beneficial use of grenache as the glue to which syrah and mourvèdre adhere for not just seamless but punch above weight red blends. As the crow flies Châteauneuf-du-Pape is but a mere 24 kms away and there are times when a Rasteau can mimic, albeit softly, the wines of that most famous Rhône appellation. Like here, with some fantasy involved, but nevertheless this is a fine local example. Drink 2023-2026.

A blend from Barossa grenache vines classified as “Old” – 35 years – and “Survivor” – 70 years. The result is less traditional than the components might suggest with notable floral aromas, hints of Turkish Delight, licorice, raspberry, and earthy notes on the nose. It’s very fragrant and the flavours are fruit-sweet but not jammy. It has lovely velvety flow in the mouth and good depth of flavour without undue heaviness. Domaine du Château de La Chaize
Château de La Chaize is among the oldest, most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region. Cared for by the same family for nearly three and a half centuries, the estate has been passed on to new owners, the Gruy family, who are equally committed to managing the estate with the utmost care, while implementing an ambitious environmental plan. Among the many initiatives is the conversion of all vineyards to organic farming, the adoption of precision viticulture, reducing carbon their carbon footprint, and recycling every by-product from viti- and vinicultural activity, to achieve zero waste.
Founded in 1670 by the seneschal of Lyon François de la Chaize d’Aix, the main Château de la Chaize building and gardens were completed by Jules-Hardouin Mansart and André le Nôtre, respectively architect and gardener of the Château de Versailles. Château de la Chaize is among the oldest, most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region. Boasting over 250 acres of vineyards, it is also one of the largest. It is today considered one of the most innovative estates in Burgundy. Among its forward- thinking practices is the adoption of eco-friendly farming techniques, commonly referred to as Agriculture Raisonnée. Chemical treatments have been reduced to a strict minimum, for example, and the growing of grass between rows has been re-introduced to enrich the soil and reduce erosion.
