Nicolas Potel is an iconic producer in Burgundy. He grew up in a family dedicated entirely to wine; and after gaining some experience internationally, he started his own project in the late 90's.

Founded in 2009, Maison Roche de Bellene offers a complete range of wines, with an emphasis on individual terroirs from vieilles vignes (old vines - 40 years or older) that are farmed responsibly. All of the growers that Nicolas Potel works with are either organic certified or farming according to the principles of lutte raisonée (“sustainable viticulture”). This enables Potel to consistently produce the expressive, terroir-driven style that is his vision.

An elegant dry and medium-bodied Old World Pinot Noir from Burgundy. Earthy and floral on the nose with ripe red berry, cherry, sweet spice, savoury herb and flinty flavours on the palate.

A nice option for pairing with grilled chicken, poached salmon or pheasant pie.

About the Winery

Groupe Bellene

Groupe Bellene is composed of the négociant “Maison Roche de Bellene” and the winery “Domaine de Bellene” both located in Beaune. Nicolas Potel grew up at the Volnay Domaine Pousse d'Or, where his father, Gérard, had worked since 1964.

Nicolas trained abroad and returned home in 1996, hoping to build a négociant business and that was the start of Maison Nicolas Potel. Potel began sourcing grapes from good parcels, often working with the growers to improve quality. By 2002, he was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations.

Today he runs Maison Roche de Bellene, a micro-négoce that offers a complete range of wines, with an emphasis on individual terroirs from vieilles vignes (old vines - 40 years or older) that are farmed responsibly. All of the growers that Nicolas works with are either organic certified or farming according to the principles of lutte raisonée (sustainable viticulture). This enables Nicolas to consistently produce the expressive, terroir-driven style that is his vision. In addition he owns his own vineyards and bottles these wines under the label Domaine de Bellene. You can also find some special back vintage offerings that Nicolas has sourced from his friends in region, this is labelled under Collection Bellenum.

90 Points - David Lawrason

This is an affordable introduction to Burgundy. It was a hot year in Europe so this shows a bit more colour depth and ripeness than normal, with pretty cran-raspberry, violet and fine scented oak. It is medium weight, nicely firm, a touch juicy with good tannin. I like the balance here, although it could use another year or two. Very good length.

90 Points - Sara d'Amato

An upbeat, flavourful, fleshy and endearing pinot noir. Offering a firm tannic grip and, as usual, is above the norm in both concentration and complexity for this generic appellation. Best 2021-2023.

90 Points - John Szabo

Another terrific value in Bourgogne pinot noir here from Roche de Bellene, ripe and fleshy per the warm 2018 vintage, yet not straying far from its Burgundian origins, with the savoury fruit, the firm acids and the pleasantly dusty tannins. It's made from old vine Bourgogne parcels, 50-80 years old, along with some declassified village wine, and aged in 600l barrels. Length and depth are indeed quite remarkable. At this price, you won't find much better in the category - I'd be pouring this by the glass in my imaginary restaurant.
