The Moreau family has been settled in the heart of Chablis since 1884. Louis Moreau, the sixth generation, studied oenology and viticulture in California and took over from his father when he returned to France in 1994. Nowadays, the domaine's vineyards extend all over the four levels of the appellation: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Premier Cru and Grand Cru.

The name "Vau Ligneau" translates as 'valley of the little brook', and this premier cru vineyard sits in a side valley on the left bank of the Serein. It has a higher proportion of clay than other premier crus, something that gives the wine a rounder profile. Its North-East exposure enhances its minerality & richness drawn from its calcareous and clay subsoil.

This wine has a classic Chablis character, with an elegant minerality and a rich, full palate. Hints of mint and pineapple on the nose, and a long finish. This 1er Cru Vau Ligneau is perfect to serve with seafood, especially with oysters or lobster in butter sauce.

About the Winery

Domaine Louis Moreau

Winemaker Louis Moreau is the master of the Chablis terroir, where he bottles 100% Chardonnay wines from all four levels of appellation: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Crus and Chablis Grands Cru.

The Domaine owns parcels in five of the seven Grands Cru climats, and works with many plots throughout the region in a sustainable manner. The most prestigious of its wines is the monopole Chablis Grand Cru 'Clos des Hospices' dans Les Clos AOC 2016, acquired by the Moreau family in 1904.

Louis Moreau, who has been leading the domaine since 1994, produces wines with a unique style. Louis Moreau studied oenology-viticulture at Fresno State University and worked at different Californian wineries before he took over the Domaine's operations in 1994, representing the family's sixth generation of vignerons.

A little more reticent on the nose as expected, relative to the Moreau Petit Chablis and Chablis bottlings from 2019, this left bank 1er cru has a cool freshness to it, an almost minty lift, before the more classic lactic and citric notes set in. The telltale richness and ripeness of the vintage is more apparent on the palate, given the soft, creamy texture and generous body (relatively speaking, of course). All in all it's a more tender expression, which should be ready to go a little earlier than the norm, and which will make for mid-term enjoyment I'd suspect - no need to cellar long term. Fine purity and refinement all in all. Tasted July 2021.
