Cascina Castlèt has belonged to the Borio family for generations; Mariuccia, the current owner, inherited it from her father in 1970. Mariuccia focuses on her terroir and the local varieties. The vineyards of the estate are spread over 31 hectares, and are all located in Costigliole d'Asti.

This is a single vineyard Barbera, named in honour of a beloved Aunt to the proprietor. The label represents the three-C logo: C for Cascina, solid and robust; C for Castlèt,  the toponym;  C for Costigliole d’Asti, the native village and centre of life and of memory for the producer.

Pours a deep ruby colour in the glass and shows an intense  bouquet of raspberries and blackberries with hints of vanilla and woodland fruits. Warm, full-bodied and dry with remarkable softness and balance.

Perfect to pair with pasta dishes, especially ravioli in game sauce.

Cascina Castelt’s is in a sense old school barbera while also high caste, rich and complex. The tonality rises and rises even as the fruit remains trenchant into the clayey earth. There is serious depth and substance here mixing emotions with barbers’a acid classicism of specificity. Wow factor barbera in fact with so much positive upside. Drink 2022-2028. Tasted March 2022.
