A Lovely, crunchy barbera in modern packaging. In addition to crunch, the palate is substantial and the long oak ageing is deliciously integrated. Offering very good structure and finesse with an unmanipulated feel. Named after great-aunt "Litina" whose dowry brought the vineyard to the family. Very good length. Tasted August 2020.
90 points - Michael Godel
Sister wine Passum by Costigiole d'Asti's Cascina Castlet is a thick varietal stew with lightning bolts of acidity and grippy structure. Such a big wine of larger than life personality with white peppery piques and properly spiced, mild dark chocolate bitterness. Will age without trepidation or any true concern. Litina repeats the mantra albeit with more depth and also more barrel concern. A stronger and more ambitious barbera than its sibling with increased bones, karst and structure. Drink 2021-2026. Tasted August 2020.
90 points - David Lawrason
This is a pretty and serious barbera. Not highly lifted and aromatic but authentic with raspberry/currant fruit, barbera's charcuterie note and some herbality. It is medium-full bodied, fairly dense with firm acidity, alcohol warmth and tannin. Nice sense of proportion here. Fairly tannic and the length is excellent. Give it two years. Tasted August 2020.
90 points - John Szabo
Juicy, lively, vibrant but dense and concentrated barbera here, with typically light and supple tannins, fresh acids, and plenty of ripe black cherry fruit on the palate. Length and depth are very good. Solid wine. Tasted August 2020.

Domaine Muré

The Muré family have been winegrowers in the region of Rouffach since 1650. In 1935, Alfred Muré, René’s grandfather, bought Clos St Landelin, a 32 acre family-monopole vineyard. Nowadays it is Alfred’s grandson René, together with his children Véronique and Thomas, the 11th and 12th generations of the family, who are responsible for running this exceptional, wholly-owned vineyard and its neighbouring terroirs, using biodynamic methods. To express the “terroir” in the wines and to preserve the heritage is the Muré family’s credo. Their wines are known for power, elegance and age worthiness.

Pierres Sèches means "dry stones" alluding to the stone wall terraces surrounding the vines in the terroir of Rouffach. Organic, 35 year-old vines and from well-draining, limestone and marl soils, helped by those dry stone walls. Actually quite unctuous pinot gris in the classic Alsace style in which some residual sugar is urged on by acidity with purposed equanimity. Begins in flinty smoulder, works through some terpenes, stone fruit and emerges into a world of candied lemon and pith. You can feel the barrel in that mild bitterness and in the creamy texture. A fulfilling wine with classicism coded in its DNA. Will transform into creme brule floating in a mineral salts bath. Drink 2021-2028. Tasted July 2020.
92 points - Sara d'Amato
An expressive and generously perfumed pinot gris. Taught but also mouth-filling with impressive viscosity in part due to a well-balanced degree of residual sugar. The acidity makes the wine feels svelt when it actually has lovely curves. Dynamic on the palate. Oily, mineral, fresh and lush all at once - the juxtapositions are delicious. Organically produced. Tasted September 2020.
91 points - David Lawrason
The hot vintage has created a very ripe, deeply coloured style of pinot gris with almost raisined fruit, orange/apricot fruit, almond and linden florality and perfume. It is medium-full bodied, fairly firm and in the end dry. The length is very good with an orange pekoe tea finish. The length is excellent.
91 points - John Szabo
In the open and loose, oxidative Mure house style, this is a ripe and fleshy, slightly off-dry pinot gris with fine balance provided by both acids and a pleasant touch of varietal bitterness, not to mention a pinch of salt on the finish that encourages additional sips. Length and depth are excellent. Lots of character on offer, and a perfect foil for that gently spicy south Asian cuisine with its own measure of fat and sweetness. Tasted September 2020.

Pure and bold notes of freshly cut russet-pear peel fill the nose on this wine. The palate adds flowing pear juiciness and concentration. Bold fruitiness is held in check by pithy, not quite zesty freshness. This wine has drive and energy, with a just off-dry finish.

Château Tour de Gilet

Château Tour de Gilet is located in Ludon Médoc, 16 km north of Bordeaux in the Médoc area. The Château was built on the foundation of an ancient abbey from the 12th century. At that time the vineyard was already surrounded by “jalles” or small criss-crossing drainage canals to help produce wines of higher quality. Today, oenologist Claude Gaudin makes an extraordinary wine at this small property, using techniques such as dense planting in the vineyard and green harvesting to lower the yield, sorting at the harvest and very natural wine making for maximum expression of the fruit.

Fattoria Nannì

Fattoria Nannì is an organic estate in Apiro in Macerata province in Le Marche, a region on the Adriatic coast of Italy. The estate was founded by Roberto Cantori in 2016. He makes white wines under the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC. This is one of the most southerly estates in the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi denomination. It's a dry, cool, luminous area protected by mountains. Monte San Vicino to the east acts as a shield while Monte Conero and the Adriatic Sea are to the north-east. The altitude is 400-450 metres and in this part of Jesi (Apiro, Cupra) the vines mainly face the sea, not the mountains.

Abbia Nòva

Located in the town of Pilio, about thirty miles east of Rome, Abbia Nova is the project of cousins Daniele and Pierluca Proietti. They farm 7 hectares of vines, mostly inherited from Daniele’s father, with many of the vines being indigenous varietals to the area. Some of these vines are at least eighty years old. The cousins follow a combination of natural and traditional methods both in the vineyards and in the cellar, starting with organic and then moving to biodynamic principles. They avoid treatments like sulphur and copper and instead use natural resistance methods that they produce themselves.

100% Passerina from a 50-year-old vineyard at 550 m above sea level. Plant density is 3,000 vines/ha. Biodynamically and homeopathically tended. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and aged on the fine lees until the following spring. Aged for two months in 54-litre glass demijohns. Total production 7,000 bottles. The technical sheet says: 'Simple but not common, like when you have a curcka moment at the mchanic's or at the laundromat. Flashes that emit light.'
Pale coppery yellow. The modest Passerina, around for 500 years in the are, showing it has more strings to its bow. Savoury, saline, apricot, bruised apple, orange blossom, iron and lees note. Hint of dry vermouth. Opens up on ht epalate with notes of sweet apricot and peach and savoury salty notes on the finish. Gorgeous lightness and loads of character, but nothing for purists, I suspect. Drink 2020 - 2022.

Stéphane Aviron

Stéphane Aviron can be considered a pioneer in his approach to winemaking in Beaujolais, however he would just tell you that he’s simply returning to the traditional practices that have always made fantastic Gamay wines. Sustainable viticulture, extremely old vines and classic Burgundian techniques. He focuses on the Beaujolais village crus, all but forgotten gems of vineyards when the nouveau craze took over, which are the best sites for unique, expressive and terroir driven wines. All of the fruit is sourced from old vines (40+ years), so seeing Vieilles Vignes on the label is a rite of passage, not a privilege. Authenticity and a distinctly Beaujolais style of winemaking is what sets Stéphane apart from the rest.

Groupe Bellene

Nicolas trained abroad and returned home in 1996, hoping to build a négociant business and that was the start of Maison Nicolas Potel. Potel began sourcing grapes from good parcels, often working with the growers to improve quality. By 2002, he was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations.
Today he runs Maison Roche de Bellene, a micro-négoce that offers a complete range of wines, with an emphasis on individual terroirs from vieilles vignes (old vines - 40 years or older) that are farmed responsibly. All of the growers that Nicolas works with are either organic certified or farming according to the principles of lutte raisonée (sustainable viticulture). This enables Nicolas to consistently produce the expressive, terroir-driven style that is his vision. In addition he owns his own vineyards and bottles these wines under the label Domaine de Bellene. You can also find some special back vintage offerings that Nicolas has sourced from his friends in region, this is labelled under Collection Bellenum.

The Cortonesi family has been making wine since the 1970’s however at the time the wine was simply for family, friends and neighbours enjoyment. In 1985 they began to offer their wines commercially. It is strictly a family business, and works according to tradition, while also employing modern technologies that help to the enhance the quality of the wines made. Tommaso, in his early 30s, is the third-generation winemaker at the winery that was started by his grandfather. The favorable location of its vineyards, and the rocky soil where they are planted, all contribute to the making of a deep and elegant Brunello. This has become a personal favourite, offering lots of Italian character for the money. It nicely straddles being both juicy and structured. From Tommaso Cortonesi in the northeastern part of Montalcino at La Mannella beneath the village and the youngest vines deciding the fresh, high acid, sparked, spirited and lively sangiovese. No secret that the 2019 vintage will deliver top quality Rosso do Montalcino and fast forward three further years even finer Brunello. Goes to show and equate that IGT Rosso as here will rarely acquiesce this level of fortune. This is bold, fruity, dark fruit and cassis-scented sangiovese from Montalcino (young vines) that over-delivers in the price category. They are a founding member of PIWOSA (Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa) which sets ethical, environmental and social uplift standards. Recognizing the social inequality present in South Africa Radford Dale has also set up a trust called Land of Hope to help facilitate bright futures for children, focusing heavily on education.
Alex Dale who owns and manages both projects is an Englishman who grew up spending summers in Burgundy, France. He moved there in his late teens to follow a passion for winemaking and also opened a wine bar in Beaune. He lived in Burgundy for many years before moving to South Africa in 1998, starting Radford Dale with Ben Radford, an Australian. The name Originel refers to “in the beginning” because in the 1960s and 1970s, Sylvaner was the donminant grape variety in the valley (the Zinnkoepflé Grand Cru, for example, was almost entirely planted to Sylvaner and Gewürz).
