Husband and wife duo Ilya and Nadia started Leaning Post winery in Niagara over 10 years ago. Initially a virtual set up, the winery now located on Highway 8, has become a reference producer in Niagara.

This mixed case includes 1 bottle of each wine:

Leaning Post Piquette 2020. The grapes we used gave us a wonderful light-pink colour and a bright, fruity nose. The nose has vibrant cranberry, sour cherry, and raspberry, layered over funky, yeasty aromas. On the palate, cranberry meets watermelon and honeysuckle with an amazing bread-like middle and extremely refreshing, bright acid on the finish. It is pink, cloudy, super-refreshing and uber-delicious! Think of this as baby-Pet-Nat meets heritage-cider meets hard-seltzer!

Leaning Post Pét Nat VQA Niagara Peninsula 2020. The intense aromatics of this wine leap from the glass, lifted by beautiful, creamy bubbles. Explosive aromas of fresh mandarin orange, Meyer lemon, fresh ginger, and notions of nutmeg and honeysuckle immediately engage the olfactory senses. The palate echoes the nose, but also brings in mango, lychee and rose-petal with the light citrus and floral components wiping through the background. A rich mouthfeel is brought on with this warmer vintage as well as the lees in bottle. Serve well chilled. Pour immediately.

Leaning Post Riesling VQA Niagara Peninsula 2018. The 2018 Riesling is the epitome of what makes bench Riesling great. It shows beautiful lemon, lime, and stone fruit aromas with a touch of honeysuckle followed but intense minerality. The palate replays the nose with some added honeydew melon and spice all balanced by crisp acidity with a fresh finish reminiscent of fallen leaves. The wine will age well for the next decade.

Leaning Post Sauvignon Blanc VQA Niagara Peninsula 2018. At Leaning Post they like Sauvignon Blanc to reflect their unique terroir and this wine shows it in spades. They picked early to preserve the beautiful mango, passionfruit, and gooseberry aromatics that we all love about the grape. The palate has a fresh acidity with notes of kiwi, gooseberry, and passionfruit as well as a pleasant flinty finish.

Leaning Post Rosé VQA Niagara Peninsula 2020. The nose has vibrant red fruits such as, sour cherry, raspberry, watermelon with complimentary savoury notes with hints of floral orange blossom. The palate supports the nose with rich texture and a delicate finish.

Leaning Post Gamay Wismer-Armbrust Vineyard VQA Niagara Peninsula 2018. The depth of this wine was structured by the warm summer and wet autumn. This wine stays true to the Leaning Post style and terroir of Armbrust Vineyard demonstrates lots of earth, mushroom, and undergrowth on the nose which is complimented by blackberry and cherry fruit with some beautiful freshly picked lavender. In the mouth there is lots of beautiful beet, blackberry, kirsch, and cracked pepper.

About the Winery

Leaning Post

A leaning post is what you find at the beginning of a row of grapes, anchoring the wires that are the frame-work for growing grapevines. It is the beginning of an obsession to translate a time and place into liquid. Leaning Post wines take you to that beginning by finding small, unique plots of land in Niagara and putting them in bottle. Because after stripping away all the fancy buildings and high-tech equipment you are left with a place on this earth that grows wine unlike any other. When you taste that in a glass you just know it. Nadia and Ilya have had to rely on the support of family, friends and financial institutions to make the dream of owning a winery a reality. Leaning Post began as a virtual winery and is so proud to now have the quaint tasting room at 1491 Hwy 8 on their home property in Winona, Ontario.

Ilya and Nadia are the brains and passion behind Leaning Post Wines. It started with a dream to take unique, interesting single vineyard blocks in Niagara and turn them into distinctive, terroir driven wines. Nadia and Ilya first met in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB where their passion for wine and each other was born.

Ilya has been a winemaker in the Niagara Region for the last 17 vintages working at Daniel Lenko Estate Winery, Foreign Affair and now at Leaning Post Wines. Ilya is also a consulting winemaker at the Good Earth Winery. Ilya’s true passion in life is to make world renowned wines from Niagara that really showcase the distinct terroir that Niagara offers.
