Baettig is the family project of winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig (Errázuriz) and Carlos de Carlos in Traiguén, some 600 kilometers south of Chile. They planted 15.4 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on volcanic soils in 2013 and the first wines are hitting the Ontario market for the first time now.

This Selección de Parcelas  was made with Pinot Noir grapes grown in Malleco, in the appellation of Traiguén. Malleco is a land of wild forests, beautiful lakes, active volcanoes and abundant rain in the southern Chilean region of La Araucanía. The ancient volcanic soils of this area are composed of pyroclastic volcanic breccia of andesite lava, with clay/loam texture. The abundant rainfall throughout the year allows Baettig to practice a dry-farming viticulture.

The Pinot Noir comes exclusively from a selection of the Traiguén and Llaima parcels, which deliver elegant and austere wines with strong ageing potential. The name Los Primos (The Cousins), refers to the closeness of style and quality of the vineyard parcels that give rise to this wine.

Pouring ruby red in the glass, this Pinot showcases refined aromas of fresh cherries and wild strawberries, with a lively bouquet of rose hip, lavender and notes of spiced orange peel and dried herbs. The palate is equally as complex, with red berry fruits supported by juicy acidity and firm but approachable tannins. Flavours of graphite unfold on the lengthy finish, owing the volcanic soils the grapes were grown in. With its deep flavours and great structure, this wine will award cellaring-if you can be patient!

Being that Pinot Noir produces  such a food-friendly wines, pairing options are endless. We recommend trying this with a mushroom-stuffed pork roulade or braised beef.

About the Winery

Baettig

Francisco Baettig and Carlos de Carlos have been friends for more than 20 years and share a passion for high-quality wines that are genuine and portray a sense of their origin.

Their family had arrived in Traiguén and Purén from Switzerland in the 19th century, and worked in agriculture in a region of volcanoes, lakes, forests and abundant rain. Their families grew up surrounded by silos, cows, wagons, horses and wheat fields.
Francisco and Carlos' passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, together with their love for the land of their ancestors, was the inspiration for making their own wine in those terroirs. Malleco now produces tremendous wines, and Bodega Baettig is a vital member of that small but energetic community of producers.

They have nine hectares of Pinot Noir and 6.4 hectares of Chardonnay that they planted in 2013.  In the first years, the fruit was sold to some leading producers in Chile (PS García, De Martino, Undurraga), and the results were very promising. They fermented their first wines in 2017, are 2020 is the first vintage that will arrive to the Ontatio market.

The 2019 Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Pinot Noir was produced in search of finesse and complexity with grapes from the El Primo, Chuir and Las Cuñadas plots of the vineyard in Traiguén. The grapes were picked in early April as a result of a warm and dry year (all relative in the cooler and rainier south), and they fermented with 15% full clusters and indigenous yeasts (like all of the wines here) and matured in French oak barrels, 21% of them new 300-liter ones, for 15 months. It's only 13% alcohol and retained 6.75 grams of acidity (tartaric) with a pH of 3.37 (quite low). I love the elegant and complex nose that goes beyond the fruit and flowers, and it has nuance and detail, notes of iron and iodine and soy sauce à la Romanée-St-Vivant. This is more discreet and shy than Los Parientes, more austere and elegant. The palate is superb, ethereal with super fine tannins and vibrant acidity. There is great purity, and it's super clean and precise. 3,456 bottles were filled in July 2020.

Ripe and intense pinot with crushed strawberries, blackberries, crushed stones and minerals. Full-bodied and creamy with round, fine tannins that are polished and provide a rather voluptuous texture. Drinkable now, but better after 2022.

The projection is to produce 55,000 bottles in 2021, and the potential of the vineyard Los Suizos (the Swiss, as they are Swiss in origin) is 90,000 bottles.
