This is fairly pale, evolving ruby garnet. It has developed a fine, complex and detailed fragrance with pretty cherry fruit, florals, fine spice and subtle leather and earthy notes. It is medium weight with that firm Nuits Saint George core of almost rusty minerality. Lots of tannic grip still in place, with excellent length. Enjoy now with aeration or hold through 2030. Lots of red-berry and blue-fruit aromas and flavours with ground spices and minerals. It’s bright and juicy, with crunchy tannins that are firm and polished. Attractive cherries and blueberries, with a flavourful, citrusy finish. Drink or hold.

About the Winery
Bodegas Exopto
Exopto is Latin for “to long for” or “to desire greatly” and it is the dream of Frenchman Tom Puyaubert and his family to endeavor to craft and assemble wines where the whole adds up to more than the sum of their parts. Tom relocated from France to Rioja in 2000 after falling in love with the region and working for the French cooperage Saury as its Spain representative.
When Tom began Exopto, he wanted to do a project that produced wines within this historical context of Rioja - combining both worlds in a unique way. His idea is to remain true to the blending of the principle grape varieties and to do so from the best terroirs/villages for those varieties crossing sub-regions of Rioja. Each wine though, has a majority of a different principle grape – showcasing that variety specifically within the context of a blend. The viticulture and winemaking model is that of the “vigneron” days – small plots of vines in the extremes, wild yeast fermentation in concrete or old oak vats and then aging in a way to showcase the fruit, minerality and terroir not the wood or aged flavours that people often associate with Rioja.

Distinctive aromas of briar, peppercorn and tarry fruit with mulberries and blueberries. Medium-bodied on the palate saturated with fresh, pulpy blue fruit and some lavender. Silky wrapping of tannins here. Maturana tinta. Drink now.

This is an unusual blend of syrah, edgy yet fragrant petit verdot and mourvedre with some viognier to add cush. It has a generous, quite rich and compelling nose of plum/blackberry jam, deep hibiscus florality, gentle clove and peppery spice and vanilla. It is full bodied, broad and hefty with alcohol power and warmth, firm but not austere tannin (thanks to the PV) and MV) and all kinds of spice and garrigue on the finish. Excellent to outstanding length. This is really well designed if on the fringe for some.

Aromas of fresh blackberries, cherries, bay leaf and olives extend to a medium-to full-bodied palate, full of savoury cocoa powder and blackberries. Resolved tannins give a tight yet caressing feel. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

This has a quite fine, delicate and complex nose of hay, wildflowers, leesy spice and vague tropical fruit. Perhaps some fennel as well. It is notably rich yet elegant, much more so than expected from assyrtiko. Powerful too at $14% alcohol. It is creamy and almost lush but the minerality and warmth keep it in check. Flavours have excellent to outstanding length. Some bitterness and a salty tang on the finish. Clearly an elite white that needs some attention.

Wow. To say this Corton Charlemagne is youthful beyond reproach would be a massive understatement and 2021 a year that hold no punches because greatness lies in the eye of the experienced. This ’21 will not jump out and grab the senses with instancy or elicit immediate gratification but it will stop to make you consider Bourgogne’s place in humanity and existence. It will distract you from anything you may have been doing by performing some kind of subtle hypnosis so that minutes go by before you realize you have been tasting and thinking about everything and nothing at all. A quasi state of dreaming, “to be nowhere, to be no one, to have nothing, to be free.” A great effect from white Burgundy that will only get better as the flesh, musky aromas, waxy feels and viscous textures develop in this wine. Drink 2025-2036.

Delicately spiced, salty, and generously perfumed with blossom, jasmine, juniper and dried floral. Elegant and polished with delicate and well-integrated wood spice that elevates the fruit. Flavours emerge on the palate of cardamom, licorice, bayberry, laurel and tilled earth. The lacy tannins give the an ethereal mouthfeel and lively acids that are beginning to sour provide tension and poise. A slight bit of oxidation signals early maturity. Excellent length. Old vines concentration indeed coupled with warm vintage ease for Meursault that’s done more than surprisingly well to not only last but remain openly fragrant for a good long time. A gift of fruit as well, more than anything else and fresh to boot. A top quality parcel gathered and granted best scenario aperture by Nicolas Potel who knows how to grow them and knows how to own them. Cue the Gambler and have a glass for full country AND western enjoyment. Drink 2024-2027

This is a quite robust and powerful chardonnay, not quite as elegant as some northern Cote de Beaune neighbours, but it is punchy and complex and quite compelling. Just heading into maturity as well with toasty notes, walnut, lemon, pear and subtle herbality. It is full bodied, mineral and a bit lean, with a sour edge. Excellent to outstanding length.

The 2020 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a crisp bouquet with crushed rock mixed with touches of dried flowers and a light sea spray note - classic Chablis really. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry. Touches of dried honey and chamomile, but underneath it all is a fine mineral spine and a decent, quite Les Preuses-like finish - Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis.

Medium yellow colour with a lovely ripe stone fruit aroma, rich and not so high-toned, the palate round and soft, rich and fruity with an attractive touch of sweetness and lovely balance. It has concentration, extract and viscosity. Yellow fruits. It resembles a modern GG style. A generous, almost opulent riesling. Sheer hedonism! (This was still drinking well two days later)
